Meet the Business Owner

Phil L.

Business Owner

Phil first started working with leather, simply because he needed a new knife sheath. Working at Convair in 1967, he found a hobby shop in El Cajon that carried a very limited amount of leather and tools. He found that working the leather came easy to him. His fellow employees in the factory soon began to order belts, wallets, and more knife sheaths, enough to keep him pretty busy on his days off. Some personal difficulties entered his life at this point, and he left the security of his factory job to devote more time to learning and plying his new trade of leatherworking. With his box of leather tools, Phil worked at several small shops around the country. During the course of his travels, he was fortunate to meet and learn from some very accomplished Leathersmiths, including his mentor, Bob Dellis, Ernie Kahle, famous toolmaker Ellis Barnes from Gomph-Hackbarth and Ivan Brailey of McMillen Tools. Returning to San Diego in the early 70’s, Phil opened his first shop on W. Quince.
