Sportsmen’s Seafoods

This place is very close to the Hyatt but it isn’t very good. The fish was tasteless and they were out of bread bowls & white zin. I would eat elsewhere before I ate here.

We came here two nights in a row while staying at the Hyatt. This is a very short walk from the Hyatt and you would expect with very few food options around here, that the prices would be very high for the food. We found just the opposite! The food was all very good, the prices were very reasonable and the service was very friendly. I agree with others that it was a bit slow but I would rather wait and have my food fresh, rather than having my food pre cooked.
The dining area is a bit of a dive, but we weren’t looking for an upscale place to eat. In fact, we took our food back to our room.
I recommend this place if you’re looking for good food at a very reasonable price and don’t mind the eating outside, or back at your hotel.

I love this place! Just discovered it while staying in the Suites at the Hyatt Regency next door. Their prices are outstanding and their food is delicious! It is our second time there and we love it. Today we got their catch of the day dinner plate (yellow fish tuna), a cheeseburger, clam chowder, and their shrimp cocktail. All for about $ 30! That’s a great price considering the fact you’d probably pay $ 30 for just the catch of the day meal anywhere else.
The wait was about 20 mins for our order but considering the fact that it’s made to order, it’s not bad. Plus, did I mention the prices?!
I will definitely be coming back here again!!!

My family was looking for a good seafood restaurant while on vacation. After striking out the previous night I was skeptical about eating out again. The catch of the day was fresh, seasoned and cooked great. I would definitely return.
The fries did not taste like fish either.

Clam chowder was a little salty but not terrible. Tuna sandwich was good and the fries were a great surprise. We were a little nervous about the mixed reviews but upon seeing the staff I completely understand. They clearly have no interest in the upkeep of the dining area. We were the only customers and still we had quite a wait for our food. They only had two staff two staff members, both are slow. Definitely has a lot of potential, needs a maid and better staff

Some dives can be good… this place is just a dive. Terrible food. There is a fish market attached but was closed at 6:00 on a Friday night, so we were not able to get Oysters. When we asked for Oysters, she rudely said «we don’t have oysters, thats why its not on the menu». We then ordered fish and chips and got an extra order and was charged double. We did not notice until we got the food back to the hotel. Inside was pretty dirty, and the staff was not pleasant at all.

It’s a great place to have some sea food and relax, or a quick bit and turn and burn. My food is very good and filling

The location is great! Really beautiful spot on the bay. We took our family of 4 here and spent $ 60. 3 fish & chips, a burger and a small pitcher of beer. We sat outside and were entertained by all the boats and birds. Afterwards we went for a walk and saw the biggest crabs (in cages) we’ve ever seen! We like the chowder at a location downtown better, but it is tasty here! My dd thought the fish had no flavor, I thought it was great.

Good food at a great price. This place was across the street from our hotel in a beautiful location. Clearly this is a local ’ s hangout since the place was so busy. It’s not an upscale seafood restaurant but the food was very good and affordable. I highly recommend the clam chowder.

Ok, all right, ok, all right, I am referencing the look of the «lustrous-​looking shrimp» that they serve here in the Oyster Bar and Restaurant, aka Fish Grotto. Not, only does it look good, the shrimp dinner plate, the taste is outstanding. Now, I am not one who eats a lot of fried food, but this stuff (the fried shrimp) is like kryptonite to me, it has me dropping to my knees. I think it is in the batter they lace it with. Btw. I found this place several years ago when I was biking the area. I can’t believe it has taken me this long to write a review, sorry guys!
I like drowning the shrimp with freshly squeezed lemon juice from their lemon wedges, and then dipping it in the red sauce.
Service is always top notch for me when I go here and the employees’ attitude is always helpful. Ask ‘em and they will help you decide on what may interest your taste buds that day or evening when you go. You pay at the counter, so it reminds of a cute little cafeteria place, except they call your number when your order is ready.
Price for the shrimp dinner is more than reasonable $ 10: includes French fries that are very crispy and flavorful, again it seems like they put a little sprinkle of magic dust to make them taste more then average. Last but not least a small dinner salad is included and it is fresh and tasty.
Go here for the total experience, nothing fancy but very genuine and surround yourself with the view of the harbor and relax. If you want to experience something really different, go to the adjacent fish market and sample some of the Tuna Jerky.
I have ordered the Tuna Jerky and had it sent to relatives in Virginia and they loved it. Price was reasonable to ship and it wasn’t damaged at all. I always buy the Tuna Jerky for home along with some of the Smoked Salmon.
How many places do you go to in Southern California allows that kind of experience?

This place really doesn’t look that great. But, IT IS! I had grilled yellow tail and my husband had the fish and chips. Delicious! Next time we are in the area we will most certainly stop by again

Great food. Delicious clam chowder bowl. Fast and friendly service. Prices are reasonable and place was clean. Highly recommend.

Took short 5 min walk to escape $$ hotel food to literally empty Sportsman’s @ 7PM mid week Jan. took a chance (and recommends from Unilocal) and dined fresco w/​the sea lions– very audable. You order @ the counter so nothing fancy but food was awsome. I had a shrimp and a Ahi taco which were de-​lish! This East Coaster really appreciated the FRESH avacado=yum. Looks like the could easily handle a crowd if your at hotel w/​a group but closes @ 8 so have a post game plan.

Wow I’m so excited to try this place I really like good seafood it’s a little bit out of the way but that’s ok had fish and chips one of my favorites it was ok the chips (fries) were a little soggy and the batter on the fish needs some work to but over all it was ok I’ll try this place out again one visit doesn’t make or break a great place to eat but if I have a choice I’ll go to Blue Water Grill.
I think if they went with a better piece of fish it would be better, the fish and chips I’m used to eating are very thick around 2 – 2 ½ in and around 8 oz but you get 2 pieces here I got 3 small pieces maybe total 8 oz’ I much rather pay a higher price for a premium fish

This place doesn’t look like much but it’s right on the marina. I got the fish sandwich. Super FRESH! Nom nom nom!

Had clam chowder. Cold and flavorless. Then ordered mahi tacos. Cardboard would taste better. A distinct lack of flavor. Service was fine and quick but taste of food left a lot to be desired

Not sure if it was an off day or not but this place was horrible and lacked flavor. Although the food came fast it was disappointing. I had the seafood platter. All of it tasted about the same could make maybe 3 of the items 2 for sure and what I could only make out to be just fried dough. Fried were good but are so easy they don’t get points. My girlfriend ordered the calm linguini. It was the most bland thing I ever tasted. Salt did slightly improve its boiled water tasting noodles and clams. But only slightly. And don’t even get me started on the dinner roll it was served as is. cold untoasted and without butter. Although they did cut it in half

Mannnnn, I had the grilled yellowtail with brown rice. I was so good, I was tempted to buy some more to go. Excellent Service, great food, good vibe from the employees, what more do you want? This nice simple place is serving way better food by far than the fancy «Red Marlon» restaurant at the Hyatt, literally walking distance away. I’m not from San Diego, but when I return it just may be for the Sportsman. THANK YOU GUYS, YOU MADE MY DAY!!!

The 1 star is for the view of the marina and not the food.
If you like raw fish and chips served by indifferent stoners, this place is for you!
I ordered their overpriced fish and chips (3 lousy pieces the length of a frozen fish stick) and took one bite and realized the fish was chewy and upon closer inspection saw that it was raw. While I spit out the raw fish, my husband took the remaining fish to the girl behind the counter and tried to show her the raw fish. She didn’t even bother to look at the fish he brought to the counter, but asked what he wanted her to do about it and that’s when the «cook» says, «it was probably skin on the fish.» Nope stoner, your fish was raw and chewy! They gave us ONE piece of fish as a «replacement.»
We also ordered the clam chowder. The potatoes were raw and hard and there wasn’t a lot of clam.
Needless to say, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Great food seafood platter is a bit of everything and tastes great! Location a lil tricky to find but totally recommend !

I’m just in town for the week and have already been here twice. My first visit, my husband and I tried the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly flaky. The fries were nice and crisp. It was mid-​afternoon, so we had next to no wait. We sat on the porch and I was reminded of the importance of sunscreen. Yeouch! On my second visit, we got an evening order to go of the seafood platter. The clam strips were my favorite! I’m generally not a fan of calamari strips (I prefer rings and the little legs), but really enjoyed these. All and all, a pleasant experience. I’ll likely pop back over for lunch today. There isn’t much over here by the Hyatt, but I’m glad Sportsmen’s is.

Went here over the weekend and had a great experience. We had a dozen oysters on the half shell, rock cod sandwich, clam dinner, and a small pitcher of beer. The oysters were good. Fresh and tasty. I wish they would continue to get them from Carlsbad, instead of flying them in from the East Coast. I know there was some red tide, but there has got to be a supplier in SoCal that they could work with. The sandwich was great. Add some Tapatio and it’ll have the right amount of spice. The clam dinner was good and they were nice enough to swap the fries for a salad. A bit too much breading, but we could still taste the clams. Would go there again if I’m in the neighborhood.

Meh. Fish n chips Batter is thin the fish tasted frozen, fries are like high school cafeteria fries. Great onion rings. And the shrimp taco was satisfying. Won’t disappoint.

Woke up this morning and wanted some sea food. So we decided to stop by Sportsman Seafood since it was next to our hotel and I’m glad we did. The food was fresh, tasty, and delicious! The portions was good for the price which was not bad at all! We will Def be back

We were craving a fried seafood meal after spending the morning at Sea World (I realize how awful that is but hey, what can you do?) so I Unilocaled for something in the area. We initially made our way down to Point Loma Seafood but the traffic and parking was horrible. We made our way back up and found Sportsmen’s Seafoods. I was wary of this place due to many of the reviews but figured it was worth a try for ourselves.
Since we were starving it was a plus that it was easy to spot and parking was easy. We walked in and there were a good handful of customers. The look of the place isn’t exactly impressive and gives off a very true to form «hole in the wall» type of vibe. The menu was exactly what we were looking for so we went with both a seafood platter and fish & chips. The cashier told us that they didn’t have any clams so we were given the option to choose another item to add extra for the seafood platter. We chose to sit outside so that we could enjoy the view of the marina. We didn’t have to wait too long for our food which was nice. Once we got our food we finished pretty much everything although I have to admit that it is definitely standard fried seafood fare. I agree with many other reviewers who mention that the food is just OK. However, this is still a good go to spot when you’re in the area, hungry, and craving this type of food. It’s a great place to enjoy the afternoon with a view so, in my opinion, it makes up for the lackluster food.

This place is a quality bargain. Friendly and fast service. We got the seafood platter and the linguini and clams. Both portions were big.
My suggestion. Grab your bike and sunscreen and ride here. Chill out with a beer and some good grub.

Friendly service, good, simple food and cheap. We had tuna sandwiches and fish and chips. Nice view at the marina. Perfect place for a lunch before heading out to sea to go whalespotting.
Honest too. My partner asked if they had coffee. Girl says that they do but it’s bad. He takes a cup anyways. Agrees that it’s bad but drinks it nonetheless ;)

Cute, casual, old-​school seafood shack, right on the harbor w/​great view of the Quivera Basin, sailboats, fishing boats, and even a few stand-​up paddleboarders, kayakers and jet skis. Have been here several times before overnight fishing trips, and today stopped in w/​the kids and dog for a spring break lunch on the patio before a Paddleboard ride.
It’s mostly a fish and chip kind of place, but they also have salads, grilled ahi tacos, chowder, burgers, and a few sandwiches. Can even get a glass of wine for $ 3.50. Honestly, the food is just ok (I’d probably rate it a 2), but prices are good (4), service is super friendly (5), and location and view are great (5), so I’ll round up to a 3 as A-​OK, and I’d come back!

I’m kind of on the fence on this one. I’ve been to Sportsmen’s Seafoods a few times over the years, always with my kid. I can see both sides of these mixed Unilocal reviews.
Pros: The location and view are fantastic. You get a bay view to watch the boat and people traffic, the sunset, and quite possibly some scavenging sea lions. On tap West Coast IPA (Green Flash) — my favorite SD local craft brew. As far as the prices go, I feel the value is pretty on target.
Cons: The food is lackluster — I would expect fresher offerings given the location and availability. The place itself is not particularly well kept — definitely gives off that Truck Stop vibe.
This week, I had the fish and chips with an IPA draft and my kid had a cheeseburger. Now that I write it, that might be the order every time I’ve visited. The food was OK if you look at it as bar grub. Some of the reviews complain about the service, but I’ve never seen nor experienced that here.
For the reviewers stating «We drove from XYZ to check this place out» etc. This is NOT that kind of place, and if you do that you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Every time I’ve eaten here it’s because I was in the area for other reasons — staying at the Hyatt or Dana, or maybe even visiting Sea World.
So if you happen to be close and hungry, consider grabbing some quick bar-​like food and a draft — but don’t take your date here.

There’s something very appealing about this establishment. Maybe it’s the fact that they’ve been in business for decades. Maybe it’s the awesome down-​to-​earth staff. Maybe it’s because of their simple but perfectly balanced tartar sauce.
What I do know is that they have a great view of the bay and the boats, and that their ahi tacos are what I get every time! Each taco has generous portions of grilled ahi, guacamole, lettuce, and just a bit of cheese & light salsa. They go for $ 3 a taco, and 2 – 3 is enough to leave you full & satisfied.
Thank you Sportsmen’s Seafoods for always being a reliable place for anybody to come enjoy a San Diego meal.

My family is addicted to fresh sea food, and being married to a diver; we know what fresh tastes like. We decided to go for a little walk before dinner one night while we were staying at the Hyatt Mission Bay. You walk through the marina and pass several boats. The evening is when all the local fishermen are returning with their days catch. We walk into this fish market and order a dozen oysters on the half and ask if he has any sea urchin (uni) he says, «you bet» and literally runs out the door, down the dock, to a boat and pulls up a basket out of the ocean and grabs our sea urchin.
They plate everything simply but beautifully. The oysters were served with a side of hot sauce, cocktail sauce and fresh horseradish. The sea urchin is still moving it was that fresh! Also, there was not a sliver of shell in any of the oysters…
Fresh, friendly and simple. The view is awesome too! Ate our food outside with a fresh local beer. Perfection!
