Specialties
San Diego Whale Watch is the only year round whale watching operation in San Diego. Just around the corner from Sea World, we’re sure this will be an experience you’ll never forget. Within minutes of departure, you and your family will begin enjoying the wide open ocean, marine birds, sea lions, seals, dolphins and of course, whales! The trip is narrated by a marine biologist with over 15 years of experience in spotting these animals. We are certain you and your family will enjoy this sea safari that is not only relaxing but a truly exciting experience.
History
Established in 2010.
In 2010, Captains Mark Gillette and Chris Switzer were running a very successful sport fishing business when they realized that their fishing customers enjoyed watching the giant whales and would frequently ask to stop and observe them feeding. San Diego Whale Watch was born!
Originally on the Eclipse, a 70 foot sportfisher yacht, Mark and Chris decided they need more room to cater to the crowds that were begging for a whale watch trip. In 2011, they purchased the Privateer, a 90 foot traditional whale watching vessel from New England. They drove her through the Panama Canal and up to San Diego, where she quickly settled into her new home, and got a fast reputation as the ONLY traditional whale watching vessel in San Diego! Many vessels can qualify for whale watching, but only a few are built in the traditional open-air and duel-deck capacity that is traditionally found in New England, the starting place of whale watching in the USA, now celebrated in San Diego as well!

Business Owner
Capt. Chris started working in the sportfishing industry on local half and three-quarter day boats in 1989. With the exception of the four years he spent in the Airborne Infantry as an Army Ranger, Capt Chris stays around fishing and fishing boats as often as possible. In 2011, he purchased the Privateer, along with co-owner, Capt. Mark Gillette. The two of them successfully run San Diego Whale Watch out of Seaforth Landing, in Mission Bay.
