History

Established in 1986.

MANA de San Diego was founded in 1986 as a local chapter of a national Latina organization and is the largest chapter with more than 850 members and supporters. MANA’s programs and events are planned and coordinated entirely by volunteers. About 150 volunteers donate more than 10,500 hours on a yearly basis. Our programs include the following:

Hermanitas — A Youth Leadership Mentor Program: The one-on-one mentorship program is a national initiative, which encourages girls, grades 7 through 12 to graduate and pursue higher education. It is the largest program of its kind in the nation. Since its inception in 1987, Hermanitas has served more than 600 Latinas. In recent years, the program has doubled in size and its successes have been featured in the Harvard Journal on Hispanic Policy.
