We’ve moved! Just down the street into a much bigger space. We are most well known for the trading card game, Magic the Gathering. Our store is a favorite hangout where you can play MTG, L5R, Pokemon, Yu-​Gi-​Oh, and try out the latest board games. We offer 1000’s of gaming supplies, dice, mats, sleeves, and binders. Our staff are experts in gaming and will give you the best advice whether you’re trading, selling, buying, or want to update your deck.

We regularly host Southern California’s ICQs and major tournaments and have been recognized by Wizards of the Coast as a premier store.

History

Established in 2011.

Jim took over management of Artifex Entertainment, formerly San Diego Games and Comics, established in 1993, one of San Diego’s oldest gaming and comic stores. Our number one goal in our family run store is to offer a great place to be, with the most competitive pricing and card selection while attracting players in a game we love and hold dear to our hearts, Magic the Gathering.

In 2013, Wizards of the Coast recognized us for setting the bar in our region for having a large player participation base, most events, and new players per year. As we continue to grow in 2016, with our new move to 10 045 Carroll Canyon Rd Suite C, Scripps Ranch, we have even more space and a fun crowd of players.

Meet the Manager

Jim P.

Manager

Jim is a San Diego native, graduate of Vista High and UCSD with a degree in Molecular Biology. Jim is the real life version of a Jace the Mind Sculptor card. Marina is a graduate of CSUSM with a Masters in History and teaches U.S. History and World History. She is a version of the Thirst for Knowledge card. We strongly believe in a family friendly environment, as we have kids of our own. We’ve been around long enough now to have players begin reading comics to their own kids and introducing them to the game of Magic. One goal remains constant with us and that is to surround ourselves with good people and good storytelling. We hope that we consistently reflect this goal in our store, feel free to send us your compliments or complaints.

Great shop. I’ve been with this shop for 20 years. I can honestly said I don’t like most of the comic shops that I go into but these guys have taken care of me since I first moved into San Diego. Comic collectors are able to have their comics pulled and held until they come and pick them up. The staff us cool and the shop plays movies during the day. If you’re a fan of comics or various games this is the spot.

I have since changed my opinion on this establishment. I have been a customer since 1999 and have followed the business to its many locations. After a long time of loving the shop, I now have a bad taste in my mouth. The shop owner needs to keep his vocal opinion on politics to himself. It’s bad for business, and it alienates his most loyal customers. Secondly, I often hear complaints from employees that he doesn’t pay them enough, and that he doesn’t pay them on time. It’s not good for employee morale and it affects customer service in the store. In the past I have stood up for the store and have offered sound advice on many of the changes that would make the store a better place to be. Many of which were taken with healthy consideration. I cannot, however, continue to provide my business to the store with an owner that mixes politics with business and fails to provide decent and consistent earnings to its hard working employees.

New location is geared more towards tournaments than actually being a game/​comic store with the exception of their magic card game section, which has, by far, the most selection of anything they cater to.
Still hardly any minis, dice selection is tiny, and no single d20s when I stopped in. If you’re looking to play magic, come here. Their tourneys are decent and they usually have a lot of people in the store. For most other games, I feel you can look elsewhere and find a lot more to your liking.

Small place, but their dice are a BIT cheaper than most places. You gotta get here when they first come in, because they run out quickly. Almost no minis aside from some grab bag boxes, and the selection of comics is ok. Lots of tournaments here, and you can score some pretty decent magic cards if you’re diligent enough.

Review only based on the «and Comics» part of the name. Not really a comic book shop. Poor Selection, staff is NOT knowledgeable (or seemingly interested) about comics Games are clearly the focus of the shop. If you are looking for a comic book shop there are ample alternative better options.

San Diego Games and Comics is the best place to play competitive Magic: the Gathering in San Diego. With that statement comes a side clause that this is not the place to go if you just bought a starter deck and want to learn to play Magic. The competition is fierce and the crowd isn’t always super welcoming to newcomers. Like any competitive skill, you only get better by playing against someone better than you, just be ready to get waxed by top tier decks and players here. I’ve routinely gotten my $%&# stomped in here by guys that have Top 8’ed GPs.
As far as the store itself, Game and Comics has an OUTSTANDING selection of cards and comparable pricing to TCG Mid for everything. Their selection rivalsThey are on top of the current meta and the staff is always extremely helpful with suggestions and advice for your brews. If you are looking for a particular card, you’ll usually get suggestions to try something else that has synergy with whatever the card is. I really like that feedback and help on the spot.
Drafts are little bit pricey compared to some of the other LGS, but again, the competition here is tougher, so you’ll only get better.
Overall, I recommend Game and Comics as a great place for the advanced Magic Player. The difficulty curve is steep, but the card selection, helpful staff and excellent singles prices make it one of the premier Magic spots in San Diego.

I’m new to Magic and was on a search to find a shop that would fuel my latest addiction so I decided to try out San Diego Games and Comics. I went in on a Sunday morning and I’m sure I was their first customer of the day. The owner (I recognized him from the shop’s website, which needs some work) and a male employee were sitting behind the counter talking. The owner never looked up and it took a while before the employee even acknowledged me. I went about looking around and I must say that I was impressed by the collection of cards and accessories they have for Magic.
The thing that was off-​putting was the lack of attention by the owner and his employee. Not once did they approach me to ask if I needed help, wanted to see something or just try and be friendly. I know, sometimes we just like to be left alone while we shop, which is how I shop most of the time. But it would have been nice for someone to have asked if I needed help, especially since I was the only one in the place. News flash, engaging your customers is how you create new customers and build your customer base.
I ended up purchasing a few accessories (they have used card set boxes, which is awesome) and left feeling like they really missed an opportunity to make a repeat customer, someone who is new to the Magic gaming scene. I felt like I just had the same experience as if I was shopping online, which is not the reason I go to brick and mortar stores.
So why even two stars? Well, the selection is great, perhaps as good as At Ease Games off of Miramar Rd. And I did send an e-​mail to the shop asking about their advertised Magic workshops, to which I received a nice response from Marina.
Would I go there again? Maybe. Oh, do they have comic books? I don’t really know, well at least I didn’t feel like that was their thing. You are better off going to shops like Villainous Lair off of Adams Ave. if you want those.

This place reinforces the stereotype that most people who work in Comic book shops are aloof and won’t talk to you. My experience was similar. The guy behind the counter was basically just talking with his buddies. I know my way around comics, but there was no acknowledgment that I was there or if I needed help.
Also there is a strange odor in the comics which was a turn off. I give 2 stars because the card selection was good.

The only reason I came back was because the wait at Denny’s was 25 min and nothing else is close by to look while you wait. My boyfriend and I walked in and were in the store for 20 min and were the only ones in there. The guy behind the counter never said a word to us, but just stared at us the whole time. Way to make us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We just flipped though some new comics we wanted to check out and made a note of the ones we liked so we can purchase them from a comic book shop who actually wants our business and can greet us when we walk in and let us know we can ask them for help if we need it. Even on the way out the guy never said «Goodbye». How do you run a business like that?!

I understand my review probably won’t be acceptable to Unilocal and end up in their «not recommended» section, but I don’t care. I’m going to review this place anyway.
Decided to check this place out as I was a longtime MTG player back in the 90s and early 2000s. I don’t live anywhere close, but decided to take the drive over because I had the day off from work.
The store itself is pretty spacious. There are lots of gaming tables in the center of the store. There were comics on the left side and all the card games and supplies on the right side. The store was both well lit and well organized. The parking situation in this commercial lot is dreadful. However, this is not their fault whatsoever. Just a word of caution.
When I walked in the store only had about 3 – 4 «regulars» in there. I could tell just by the way they conversed with each other and the man behind the counter. I wasn’t greeted whatsoever, and even when I made eye contact with the guy behind the counter he quickly looked away and went back to his conversation. Strange, I thought, but whatever. I spent about 10 minutes throughout the store, just browsing at the various singles and MTG supplies in stock.
At no time did anybody ask if I needed help or if they could show me something. I guess customer service to these people means having the customer approach them, not the other way around. From what I understand that is kind of the norm at this place. If you aren’t a «regular» you aren’t treated too well upon reception. I had about $ 200 to drop but after being completely ignored the entire time I decided to walk out and take my business elsewhere.
I’ve read many comments regarding the stench of this place. There was no off-​putting odor whatsoever… it was a totally neutral smell. Didn’t stink of BO and didn’t stink of extreme deodorizer. It could be, however, because I was there on a Tuesday afternoon and nothing was going on.
My suggestion… don’t treat new customers as if they did not exist. You lost a big sale because I was totally ignored. It’s like «regulars» almost totally ignoring the new guy in the play group. Cast from the same mould I guess.

Jim is a cool guy known him for a while. Only I could say negative is the place stinks of body oder but not his fault (although I would let some guys in there know they need to shower and put some dam deodorant on this ain’t india… we have good clean water in the us).
Prices on MTG are at avg. If you know Jim he might give you the homie discount lol. Jim will help you out with anything when understanding the mtg game.

BUYER BEWARE: The shop adds 8.5% sales tax when the San Diego County tax is only 8%. (The exceptions are Vista 8.50%, La Mesa 8.75%, El Cajon and National City 9%.) The issue was brought up to the cashier and was insistent that «it hasn’t been 8% for a while.» Double check our receipt and do the math. Even though .5% is measly, it can add up in the long run and go who knows where. Plus it’s sales tax fraud.

Great selection of comics, board games and trading cards. This shop is perfect for competitive Magic the Gathering. The staff is knowledgeable when it comes to organizing events. However as Magic is one of the primary focuses of the shop, some of the other trading card games such as Yugioh are disgustingly neglected. The shop does provide some Yugioh product but the prices can be ridiculous at times. There’s no other shop in the area that supports Yugioh so this place is by default the best. The store is kept clean and the staff is friendly so I give 3 stars for that. If the other card games receive more support from the store, I will rewrite my review. It’s still one of the better card shop but there is still much to improve.

This store has an incredible section of amazing games. They carry a lot of board games that can normally only be found online. One of my friends is a board games nut and I found him the perfect present, but it was too late to order it online. I was about to cop about and get him a getting card after calling several game store, but I found this gem. The sales associates were nice enough, but they enjoyed asking misleading questions and purposely making awkward statements. Nothing too rude, but it can be a little daunting if you do not know what to expect.

Giving two stars mostly because they seemed to have a good selection? I dunno, I’m just too nice to give one.
Anyway, came in here on a weekday ready to buy some specific magic cards. I had a couple questions, and couldn’t find what I was looking for in the case. There were two guys behind the counter and three guys chatting with them, and nobody else in the store. Nobody asked me if I needed help, nobody welcomed me to the store, nothing. They all stood there, loudly (and crudely) talking about various comic con related events, movies, and overall random topics. Nobody seemed to be working on anything. I stood in front of the cases for about five minutes, walking back and forth, clearly not finding what I needed. I tried walking over to the registers to ask for help, but the «customers» had big backpacks and were blocking the narrow aisle between the table and the glass case. So I walked alllllll the way around the long table, stood at the register for 4 minutes, stared at the two guys behind the counter as they continued to chat and laugh with the «customers» and nobody said anything to me. Finally, the guy behind the counter made eye contact with me, at which point I told him I just needed some sleeves. I really wanted more, but was so put off by their unwelcoming and awkward attitudes, I had no desire to spend another minute there. I would have left, but figured I’d get something since I drove almost a half hour to visit.
I’m sure if I was a pushier person I could have gotten help sooner, but it was so awkward there with those guys all chatting so loudly, I felt intimidated.
All in all, if you’re a nerdy guy who wants to talk loudly about super heroes and boobs, you’ll probably like this place. If you actually have questions or need help, I’d go elsewhere.

Great place has lots of comics and cards however when I was there I wait an 30 mins for service because of MTG players. However great comic selection and great place in general highly recommend, but you’re not a MTG player then wait.
Also do you guys buy YUGIOH cards? I have tons that are rare that I don’t need and are still in great shape other and that keep up the good work!!!

Updating my review since I was, surprisingly, responded to. I started visiting the store during the day, and it smells completely fine. It’s just something about Sunday night apparently, I don’t know haha.
A comment on the Yugioh response though, I didn’t know about tournaments or anything like that, considering I play Yugioh just with a few friends, and I did say that I was a weiss schwarz player.
The next time I go in I will talk to Jim to see about WS prices.

This place is absolutely great and is every child’s dream! They have a variety of board games, card games, comics and graphic novels. It might seem nerdy to some but what do you expect going in to games and comics store!
If you are looking for comics this place is it. They carry large number of current titles, and if you really want to get in to comics they offer weekly pulls with discounts if you get 10 titles a month. The only drawback to this place is the lack of back issues, but if you can’t find something just ask the owner and he’ll try looking for you. Sometimes he has surprised me by finding me a key issue 6 – 12 months past. They also have a decent selection of graphic novels, and you can even special order some by asking the owner or employees!
As for card games this is the place to be! Very fair prices and decent trade in value makes this place the best for magic cards in San Diego. They also do other card games such as yu gi oh, L5R or WoW Tcg. There is also a bunch of board games and if u don’t see one you want u can ask the owner to order one.
There is also a bunch of tournaments for all of these games, which means it can get cramped and hectic but it also means a lot of people to play with! They also have a couch and TV with movies for parents or loungers! And they are open late making it a great hang out spot for late night gaming!
The staff is friendly, and can sometimes be busy especially during tournament times. Also they are not well informed in certain areas, depending on which employee and what area… (they each apparently have their own area of expertise it seems) best bet is to talk to the owner. There was one employee who was incredibly courteous though went off topic numerous times, I believe his name was Kelly. Took a little too much time with each customer, but was funny none the less.
