San Diego Canoe & Kayak Team

The San Diego Canoe and Kayak Team is a non-​profit organization focused on developing young athletes in the sports of canoeing and kayaking. Founded by 1992 Olympian, Chris Barlow, the team includes paddlers of all skill levels and ages and offers unique opportunities to travel to both regional and international competitions.
The group meets on Fiesta Island and has been sponsored by the City of San Diego Lifeguards. The Children’s Racing Team is an offshoot of the Junior Lifeguards program and trains the juniors in how to handle kayaks and canoes.
In fact, the Children’s Racing Team is the only program in San Diego designed to develop and train children in competitive paddling. My son became an expert kayaker thanks to the great training found here. He also got to march with the kids group in the annual OB Christmas Parade, where they roll down Newport Avenue in motorized kayaks! Because of the expert first class coaching, many participants go on to graduate and compete at world class levels.
It is really nice to kayak early in the morning on Fiesta Island. There is a calming peacefulness found there and no where else like that in San Diego. Budgetary cuts are encroaching on this program and they are currently rallying support. 5 STAR Unilocal for outstanding kids sports program and excellent coaching.
