At the San Diego Breastfeeding Center, our mission is to provide soon-​to-​be and new moms with compassionate guidance and education about breastfeeding and newborn care. Our classes, consultations, and support groups seek to nurture the relationship between mother and child and to help our moms feel confident and empowered.

History

Established in 2009.

In 2005, I entered the full-​time «profession» of motherhood. My son, Benjamin, was born in July 2005 and I knew that I wanted to breastfeed him. After 19 hours of labor, 2 ½ hours of pushing, and multiple bags of fluids, Benjamin and I did not get off to a great start with breastfeeding. After 4 days of frustration, I called a lactation consultant and had her come to my home to assess what I was and was not doing. After 90 minutes of supportive advice and guidance, Benjamin was latching and eating and I felt relieved and empowered.

In 2008 I decided to change my career from museum educator to lactation consultant. I wanted to help new moms feel confident and empowered, just as I had felt after my LC visited my home. My hope is that I can provide that same compassionate, non-​judgmental care for my new moms so that they will feel empowered in their ability to breastfeed.

Robin received training to become a Certified Lactation Educator and a Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant from UCSD. She holds a Masters in Education from UCLA, a multiple-​subjects teacher credential from UCLA, and a BA in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. In addition owning the San Diego Breastfeeding Center, Robin is also the host/​moderator for The Boob Group podcast and the founder of the San Diego Nursing in Public Task Force.

Absolutely first class. Robin cares deeply about mom and babies in a way that comes up with a detailed plan that is right for your unique situation. There is no one-​size-​fits all approach, and that is what I loved so much. I was also extremely impressed by the (free) community they have created and the timely support she provided when I was at my lowest as a new mom. You can absolutely not go wrong by asking SDBC to help you and your baby get the best possible start. (Oh and AWESOME class about breastfeeding and going back to work!)

I met with Anna for a Back-​To-​Work consultation the week before returning to work from maternity leave when my baby suddenly decided that she was done with the bottle. Talk about stress. Returning to work AND worrying about my baby starving all day at day care? Anna was great and gave my husband and I a number of tips to try and reassurance that our baby was likely to start taking the bottle again after a few days at daycare. She suggested a different bottle than what we had been trying (and I had seriously tried like 5 kinds by then) which my baby ended up accepting the second day at daycare. Whew! In addition to our in person meeting Anna continued to answer a few of my questions by email after our appointment and I’m happy to say that now 6 weeks into daycare my baby usually finishes all of her bottles! (okay need to knock on wood now so I don’t jinx myself!)

I had (and continue to have) a wonderful experience with the San Diego Breastfeeding Clinic. I have had the pleasure of working with Anna Choi who not only provided myself and my daughter with a last minute consultation in my home, but continues to provide follow up care via e-​mails and quick phone calls. She thoroughly answers my questions and concerns, and has been invaluable in transitioning my daughter off of SNS. Her support and breadth of knowledge is extensive and delivered in a calm and unbiased manner.

Robin is the best! I was ready to throw in the towel on breast feeding multiple times after multiple issues, but luckily I met Robin! She is quick to respond at all hours and went out of her way to help us on multiple occasions. We’ve seen her privately through appointment and also attended the breast feeding group at the center. We also took a class for breast feeding for working moms, which was super helpful. She always takes the time to answer questions and if she doesn’t know the answer will do research, talks to others, etc and get back to you. She is extremely caring and it shows in her work. Highly recommend her if you have (or are going to have) a baby!

Robin and Ashley are absolutely amazing! They are calm, extremely organized, and know exactly what they’re doing. My son had tongue and lip tie that was missed by several pediatrician and two lactation consultants that saw us at the hospital, Robin was able to diagnose him immediately and provide us with several options of treatment.
Both Robin, and Ashley are very knowledgeable and caring. They provide you with great advice, while listening to your needs and concerns.
I have been recommending SDBC to every new mother I know, and I will continue doing so!

Robin is amazing! My daughter fell on the growth curve and she wasn’t taking the bottle well so supplementing with formula was not going well. Robin reassured me and helped me come up with a plan that would help increase my daughter’s overall intake of breast milk (and it’s working!). Robin is supportive, caring, compassionate and very knowledgable. Her follow-​up places her over the top in terms of service — she truly cares about her clients and their babies. There should be «Robin» on every corner to help all breastfeeding moms!

Fantastic!
Robin is professional and extremely knowledgeable. My challenges included baby not latching properly, nipple pain, and low milk supply. Robin was very understanding and helpful. After the first week, my newborn had lost too much weight. I was referred by multiple sources to Robin, and I’m so thankful! She came up with a breastfeeding plan and she made me feel confident about us being able to get baby back on track with feedings and weight gain.

Robin’s help and reassurance were so helpful and totally worth the money. Our insurance did not cover, but we were concerned about baby’s weight gain and saw her when he was a week old. I’m so glad we went sooner then later. She helped us start off on the right track and now baby is latching and feeding much better!
Update: Unfortunately our BF journey has not gone too well. We’ve had multiple struggles along the way, but Robin was right there with us. She meets you where you’re at and there is no pressure to continue BF if it’s not the right choice for you. I remember going to a support group so distraught at everything and telling her that I was afraid all of our BF issues were negatively impacting my relationship with my baby. Robin looked straight at me and said «Breastfeeding is ideal, but if it’s effecting your ability to bond with your baby, it might not be worth it.» I really appreciated her validation and no-​pressure attitude. It was ultimately my choice! Now we are just pumping and supplementing with donor milk (which she was a great educator on). Robin is wonderful :)

Robin was more help than I could have imagined– extremely thorough and clearly knows her stuff. She gave me a comprehensive list of suggestions that addressed not only each of my issues, but each of the potential issues that may be a factor & how to identify them. The list includes links to videos and other things that will help me along the way. My confidence in her has given me confidence in myself which is huge at this point. I feel like I have a plan and can do this now :)

Robin Kaplan is truly a lifesaver for any struggling breastfeeding mom. I attended her working moms class and she helped us plan a schedule and explained how much to give at each feeding, when to pump, etc. I also just had a consultation with her because my son is 5 mo and my supply is dipping. She is just a wealth of knowledge, and came up with a detailed plan to keep my supply up and even typed it all out for me and sent it to me right after our session. I walked away with answers and confidence.

I had an appointment this week with Robin and I found her manner to be incredibly helpful without ever being pushy, forceful, or hurried. Other LCs I’ve seen have been short with me, and they kind of «manhandled» me and my baby. Robin was gentle, caring, and sought permission before handling my baby or me. She answered all my questions and definitely put me at ease during our appointment. I would highly recommend seeing her to any other new moms (or any moms who encounter problems with breastfeeding) in the area.

Breastfeeding has been very challenging for me. It made me wonder how the human race survived over thousands of years. I went to SDBC because of bad nipple pain. Robin discovered my daughter’s tongue tie. She discussed possible options and plans with me. She also went above and beyond to help me coordinate my daughter’s frenotomy. The staff at the center are all very helpful and supportive. Highly recommended!

I could not recommend Robin Kaplan enough to new moms. During my pregnancy I went to multiple classes offered through the hospital and NONE of them talked about potential difficulties that new moms can run in to breastfeeding. I felt so lost when my baby could not latch and was exhausted on top of it. Robin was recommended by our Pediatrician. I called and she responded immediately and fit us in her schedule within the next few days. After meeting with Robin, she devised a written plan for specific to what we needed to stay on track with feedings, pumping, etc. She was a lifesaver!!! I look back now at how hard it was and cannot stress enough to new moms to seek help rather than give up on breastfeeding. AND, go to the support groups! You can learn so much from listening to Robin talk to other moms!
I HIGHLY recommend Robin and San Diego Breastfeeding Center.

Money very well spent! My 7 week old had been doing farely well breastfeeding thus far but I still had some breastfeeding and pumping questions. It had been hard for me to get out of the house with my newborn so wasn’t sure if I would be able to make a support group. So glad I had a one on one consultation with Robin. She recommended some supplements for me (I had been feeling like I had extreme exhaustion post partum) that really gave me an extra boost. She created a personal plan on things I could work on with some of the issues I had and will be helping me get a pumping plan going when I return to work full time soon. With her help I have confidence I can pump and return to work!

I worked with Ashley after seeing FIVE other Lactation Consultants for issues with breastfeeding my son. She was wonderful — she really listened to what I had gone through up to that point, provided thorough instructions and advice and was realistic in what I should expect. She followed up several times, and even provided me with information on plugged ducts that were plaguing me weeks after our final appointment — and responded to questions from me over the holidays and while she was on vacation. I really can’t say enough about how great the experience was with her — in a series of bad experiences and frustrations in my attempts to breastfeed, Ashley was really a true professional who provided not only expertise but support and encouragement. I would recommend her to anyone.

I am very happy that I decided to use the services here. I decided to pay for a one-​on-​one lactation consult. Robin was so kind and so helpful, and so thorough. I left feeling much more confident about my ability to breastfeed and work through our breastfeeding issues. I also got an appointment the day after I found their company online, which was very helpful. When you have breastfeeding issues, you don’t want to wait weeks to be seen!

In my first two months of nursing, I really came to understand the meaning of «it takes a village.» I’m so grateful that Robin was a part of my village! I was experiencing a lot of pain with breastfeeeding, and she immediately gave me such great help. She guided me through several different courses of treatment, and allowed me to decide what would be best. She called to check-​in and to offer follow-​up advice by phone. She contacted an ENT to help us get in to see him 2 wks earlier to have my baby’s tongue tie assessed. She is extremely knowledgeable, and it is very apparent she loves what she does. She puts her heart and soul into her work, going above and beyond to ensure things are improving. At the start of working with her, I really doubted whether I would be able to continue breastfeeding. Thanks to her, I now actually enjoy nursing!

Ashley is amazing! I had tons of questions and concerns and she was right there to help answer and put my mind at ease. My son was tongue tied and has a dairy/​soy intolerance, Ashley was very knowledgeable and offered many recommendations and options on how to overcome any challenges.

I feel so lucky to have found Robin! I recently had twin girls and though they were blessedly healthy, they were super hungry! Which means they chomped up my nipples pretty fast. To the point where I couldn’t feed from my left breast without practically writhing in pain. I felt so bad making the decision to pump that side and just feed from the right but when Robin saw that nipple after 2 weeks she said «Oh yeah, you can’t feed from that!» Which made me feel so much better because I knew I wasn’t being a big baby, it was a legitimate problem! She quickly gave me a recipe for a home medicine and a ton of advice.
Within a few days I could see the skin healing and was able to cautiously introduce that breast to the babies, though at first just twice per day. Now, at 6 weeks I can feed a baby every feed from both sides!
I am so grateful for Robin. Though she came for 1 home consultation, she followed up twice per week for a couple of weeks until I was making great improvements. It was great having her for a resource! I highly recommend seeing her if you have ANY questions or concerns about breast feeding.
