San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House is a community-supported «home away from home» for families caring for critically ill or injured children at local hospitals.
Our 47-room House provides a place to stay for 5,000 people a year, keeping families close to their hospitalized children. Thousands more make use of our Family Care Center during the day for meals, computer access, play spaces, and more, taking a break from the often stressful hospital environment.
We are grateful to the many volunteers and donors across our community whose contributions help ensure that our House is open to families during their time of crisis. Please visit our website to donate, volunteer, or learn more.
History
Established in 1980.
Our first Ronald McDonald House was founded by a group of caring parents who knew firsthand the challenges of caring for a critically ill child. Far from home and under tremendous stress, these families are often without a place to sleep other than a hospital couch, a costly hotel room, or even their car. We’re here to help ease their burdens and take care of basic needs while they care for their seriously ill children.
In 2009 we opened a new facility with 47 guest rooms, pleasant outdoor courtyards and cheerful play spaces for children. We added a Family Care Center that’s open to anyone with a child in a local hospital, offering meals, computer access, laundry facilities, and more. We also operate an onsite school for the siblings of hospitalized children, in partnership with San Diego Unified School District.
We’re an independent 501©(3) that was the twentieth House in a network of more than 310 separate Houses worldwide.
