History

Established in 2005.

The voyage of Point Loma Outfitting starts in the water 40+ years ago. For co-founder Tom Carruthers, it was in the harsh Great Lakes around Michigan — where he first sailed, then raced, then won. Along the way, he plied his boating skills intensely in larger and larger vessels, races and bodies of water — Mackinacs (16 times), SORCs, MORCs, Canada’s Cups and America’s Cups.

For co-founder and wife Katie, it was in the pools of Southern Cal — where she learned to swim, then raced, then won. Her water mastery took her to races across the US and finally to UCLA. Some of her records still stand. Since meeting at a regatta, they’ve made the bays and coasts of San Diego their base of water operations. They boat there, obviously. They also pioneered sailing education there.

The next tack, naturally, was a store specializing in the best apparel for life on the water. Not just the best in San Diego, but the country — selling only top performance wear makers SLAM, Camet, Patagonia and Puma.
