Came here one night just because I needed to satisfy my cravings. I love how clean this place looks and the food wasn’t too bad either. Only problem I had was that it was a little hard to understand our server(not trying to be mean). Service was alright, it definitely could be somethings they could work on. I’d come back just for the phở’.

Never again. Ordered P19 and it was the worst saltiest, sweetest phở I’ve had in my life!

I’ve only been here once, but as an avid customer of Vietnamese food restaurants I can say that I liked how this place met my expectations for almost all aspects I look for in a dining experience. I had the phở tai sach and my mom ordered the vegetarian bun. The bun could have had a little more veggies and improved on the sauce, but the phở was good! I would come back if I were in the area again. The service and décor was great!

Parking was difficult to find. Decent service. Was greeted and seated right away! Ordered P7 and P14 and 6 eggrolls. The phở broth was sweet(too sweet for my hubby) and very good. The meat was tender and the noodles perfectly cooked. The eggrolls were mediocre. A bit too fishy for me along with the sauce. Clean restroom!

Amazing mom and pop phở restaurant! Authentic Vietnamese food with super fast service. Was given a sample menu of their new restaurant opening in Balboa Ave, and can’t wait to try it as it’s closer to home for me!

+4: I love phở, and up until I tried this place, I was an OB Noodle House faithful. My boyfriend and I had planned to eat at a different restaurant in Hillcrest but were given a 45 minute wait time, where we would have to wait outside in the rain. We saw this place and without even enough time to check the reviews, we ran over and were seated immediately. I got phở with shrimp and tofu, which is pretty standard for me as I don’t eat a lot of meat. The problem with that at most phở places is that you get maybe 3 pieces of shrimp or tofu for a higher price than the other selections! Not here! My soup was LOADED with both shrimp and tofu! I got a regular size and I couldn’t even finish it(and it’s rare that I don’t finish food). More shrimp and tofu just kept popping up like my bowl was Mary Poppin’s bag. Also, their fried egg rolls are so good! –1: We had to share a set of tables with other people. I don’t mind sitting next to other people at all! But, I do tend to have a lot of stuff(jacket, purse, umbrella, etc.) on me, and I like to be able to spread out/be comfortable without being in the way of other people. The service is standard for authentic Vietnamese restaurants. They don’t give you a lot of attention(like oh so many Americans need evidently) but they always get you what you need when you ask for it. You want to order something else? You need more sauces? Ask and you shall receive. But they don’t hang over your shoulder asking you if you like this or that or want to try anything else or need silverware.

I’m from out of town so cannot compare how this place compares with other phở options in San Diego but having eaten a lot of phở from Seattle and San Francisco this joint is legit!!! That being said I’ve been here at least twice over three years and every time service was speedy and good. The place is clean. The menu is simple and your typical Vietnamese menu with phở, appetizers, rice, dry noodles, stir fry, banh mi. Their drink does have some strange stuff like salty preserved plum juice which I ordered and… unfortunately it was really salty and too much for me. Phở is good but nothing extraordinary. I ordered stew beef with rice. The lunch order for stew beef was a little small… despite a slightly higher price tag. Not many chunks of beef although it was really delicious and tender. Overall I like the place and if I ever need a phở fix will definitely come back again!

I’ve come twice and it was good each time. Not the best Vietnamese food I’ve ever had but a good choice. I wasn’t a fan of the phở broth but it was ok. The bun(vermicelli bowls) are great though. Their fish sauce has great flavor, good portions, and cheap. Service is quick and it’s usually busy.

It’s a phở place. Open later than most phở places. Food was just average for me. The inside of my banh mi was delicious but I’ve had better bread. With the soup it felt like the broth was missing something. I got the lean brisket which wasn’t bad, but I realized maybe I enjoy a little fat on my brisket. Also the table did have an odd smell, like that after smell a washcloth that needs to be rewashed leaves on a the table after being wiped down with said washcloth. I wouldn’t mind coming here again but if I had a choice for late night phở I may opted for Saigon on fifth down the street.

The No1DP and I were around Hillcrest again and considering that the highlight dinner of his latest visit was later that night we wanted a quick bite to eat that wasn’t going to make us too full for dinner. This was one of the few places that was open and didn’t have a long line. Parking in any Hillcrest restaurant plain sucks and is usually 2 hours, so take that into consideration when dining here. As the restaurant mainly serves the typical dishes in a phở restaurant it’s no-frills compared to the other nearby restaurants. Tables were small but clean. The waiter servicing us was rather curt and provided bare-bones service but we both didn’t mind this too much as we were both tired from the night before. — Spring Rolls(Rice paper rolls with shrimps, vermicelli, bean sprouts, lettuce, and mint. Served with peanut sauce, $ 4.75). The actual rolls were slightly warm but there was a decent amount of shrimps. No1DP and I enjoyed the peanut sauce. — Grilled Shrimps(Marinated shrimps grilled over open flame, $ 7.50) No1DP’s dish. He was initially taken aback that he was the only person that the waiter served a fork while I was passing out chopsticks for both of us. The No1DP is used to Japanese rice — a shorter grain sticky rice that can cling to the chopstick more readily so he was actually glad that he was offered a fork. He prefers his rice on the stickier side but it was still edible. The shrimps were of decent size and appropriately grilled. — Fatty Brisket($ 6.75). Typically I order whatever the restaurant’s dac biet phở that contains all the meat but I wanted a low-frills soup, so I asked for a soup containing just my favorite meat — fatty brisket. There was a decent amount of meat with lots of spring onion topping. I’ve had fattier brisket pieces and it seemed like I was eating lean brisket. The broth was also a little tad too sweet for me. The food itself is 3-star worthy but I had to dock a star because the fatty brisket phở triggered a stomach bug the next morning that made me cancel my brunch reservation. The restaurant is one of the cheaper spots of Hillcrest but I think there are enough good restaurants in the area that I’m much more willing to spend extra money on something that won’t make me get sick the next day. It also doesn’t help that the nearest phở place closest to me typically serves a better bowl and that’s considering that the eastern Chula Vista area is pretty much devoid of good eats.

Would have given this a 3 based on the phở noodles, but the nem nuong cuon was too good(of course not as good as Brodards) to give it just a 3. The phở broth was really good, not too salty and not too heavy. I pretty much drank it all and had nothing but the lump of noodles left behind. I had rare steak, tendon, and added beef balls to my bowl — the beef balls were decent but I wouldn’t get them again. The service was pretty average, nothing special but they kept our water filled. Would go back only for the rolls.

Yuck. I used DoorDash to order some spring rolls the other night, which was convenient, very convenient actually, but the food missed the mark. Well, 1⁄3 of it did. The delivered spring rolls came packaged two in an order, were individually wrapped and then wrapped again in a styrofoam tray. Yeah, a whole lotta wrappin’ goin’ on. The intent was to have three for dinner and then save three for lunch the next day but that plan was spoiled when I unwrapped package number two. While the first ones were fresh with the signature tacky consistency to the rice paper, the second batch was tough, dry and smelly. The shrimp smelled, well, shrimpy, unappetizing and out of character for fresh spring rolls. For the sake of comparison I opened package number three, which were the same quality as package number one. Does any of this make sense? Long story short, I got a bad batch and it left me with a lackluster lunch the next day. On the upside, DoorDash was incredible and you can expect a glowing review from me very soon!

In the world of phở, once you’ve had enough of it, you begin making a spectrum of them in your mind of everywhere you go. On my quest for the best phở, the phở I was given here was above average making a 7 on a scale of one to ten. It was a really busy evening and the waiters seemed stressed so I won’t factor the service into this review as I’ve read that their service is usually top notch. My disappointment was that the phở broth didn’t taste as flavorful as others I’ve tried and the noodles weren’t al dente which is a must for my phở. The table ingredients(mint leaves etc.) were generous but I felt that their phở dac biet(my go to phở order) was a little on the sparse side when it comes to meat. The reason I still gave it a four star review though was because my friends ordered phở tai(rare beef) and phở bo vien(beef meatballs) which tasted better.(Some of my friends wanted me to help them with their bowl because they accidentally ordered the large sizes). It didn’t feel very consistent but based on my experience, this place receives four stars. The food was good, but my personal order was subpar.

I love love their Banh Mi. They seriously have the best Banh Mi Thit Nuong in SD. The secret is because they use the same meat for their vermicelli as in their sandwiches! It’s so delicious and way better than skinny hard ass bread from K Sandwich and barely any meat and all bread. Their vermicelli combo is delicious too. I like the fact that phở fifth stays pretty true to the Vietnamese phở places. They do not try to be fancy. They don’t have fancy beers, plating, or overpriced food… it’s only about $ 1 – 2 more than what you’ll get on Convoy, which is a great deal in Hillcrest! Dinner for 2 can be as little as $ 20.

I’ve been eating a lot of Vietnamese food lately, like a lot. So now I typically go astray from phở when eating Viet. It’s not that I don’t like phở anymore, it’s just that there are so many other delightful dishes to choose from. I’ve had the following dishes from this joint: V1 Vermicelli — this came with pork sausage, grilled shrimp and chicken, and some kind of deep fried shrimp patty as well as an egg roll. All of which was serviced over some rice noodles. The dish was delightful and super fresh Highly recommend! Banh Mi with grilled pork — this is a great sandy and it’s super duper cheap! I ordered 3ea! Please try this next time you come, even if you split it. Just try it! Phở Filet Mignon — it’s phở and a great one too. If you’re reading this, then you’ve most likely had phở and this one in particular is pretty damn good. 33 Beer — $ 3/ea and refreshingly light. Check it out. All in all Phở Fifth Avenue does a great job and is reasonably priced. Parking sucks, but hey it’s Hillcrest. I highly recommend this place. My new Viet spot in Hillcrest.

Soup on a rainy day is THE best! So 2 of my girlfriends and I decided to go here for dinner. I ordered the P11(small), Phở with rare steak and lean brisket. The soup came out pretty fast. The noodles were really yummy and I loved the lean brisket, that I kind of wished they added more of it. The soup was so delicious, I almost finished the broth, which I rarely do.

First time ever, where i tried something other than Phở at a Phở place. When i eat here its becuase i’m craving phở or its a rainy cold day. But this time i wanted to be a baddie and change it up haha. Anyways i ordered the rice vermicelli with egg rolls and shredded pork. It was delish — yummy in my tummy, although it was mainly shredded cabbage and carrots vs meat & vermicelli. Good service. Busy & Quick.
