History

Established in 2007.

San Diego bike shop, Moment Bicycles, first opened it’s doors on Rosecrans St. in Point Loma. The small location lacked parking, but Moment still had the know-​how and services to attract customers from around the county. Now located in Liberty Station, parking is no longer an issue, and the selection is much larger. (The great brewery next door is a bonus!) While primarily focused on the San Diego road bike and triathlon bike markets, Moment Bicycles bike mechanics never hesitate to service any bicycle that walks in the door.

Over the years Moment Bicycles has become a nationwide leader in bike fitting. First and only to use a true «Fit-​First» protocol, first with a fit bike, first with a motorized fit bike. First with comprehensive cleat pedal interface protocol, and first with custom molded insoles for cyclists. There is a difference in bike fit! Let us show you the difference! JT L.

Business Owner

JT grew up riding bicycles through the canyons of San Diego. The bike was his transportation. As a kid, JT explored San Diego, frequently grounded for going «too far» by bicycle. Bicycles meant freedom, speed and fun!

JT started his career as a mechanical engineer, developing supercars for Shelby American and Ford. Transferring his knowledge to aerospace, he worked for a San Diego company developing carbon components for military and aerospace applications.

In 2005 JT bought a new bike; having saved for months, he wanted it to be perfect. It wasn’t, actually it was a mess. Wanting a better way (and being an engineer), JT developed the Fit-​First process and started the San Diego bike shop Moment Bicycles in 2007. JT vowed to get people on the right bike with the best bike fit the first time. An avid amateur triathlete and road racer, you can find JT riding the roads and canyons of San Diego if he’s not in the San Diego bike shop. Join us for a San Diego bike ride!

I really appreciate the kind and friendly service at Moment Bicycle shop. This weekend I will be doing a lot of climbing and descending with Braveheart Camp and I was worried about my brakes. They took a look and made an adjustment on the spot that made a big difference. Now I feel confident that my brakes will be there for me when I need them on Palomar and the GWL. Thank you Moment!

I’ve been doing lots of road riding for over 10 years and have continued to struggle with knee pain due to past athletic injuries. In the past I’ve had two different respectable bicycle shops do a bike fit for me and neither was even close to as thorough as Moment Bicycles. I am very pleased with how Moment Bicycles evaluated all aspects of the cycling stroke to help my riding to be as efficient as possible. For example, I had never considered adding simple shoe inserts into my bicycle shoes to help with my arches. Since I added the shoe inserts and moved my cleats about 2 mm back I have noticed it is significantly easier to climb on steeper slopes. Since I had my bike fit I have noticed that I have less muscle pain following harder rides and I recover faster. I am extremely satisfied with the outcome of my bicycle fit from Moment Bicycles.

Couldn’t be any happier with the bike fit I got for both my road and tri bike. It did make a huge difference, and I can’t stress enough the importance of a good bike fit as felt after my fitting. It’s always a pleasure working with Mike, he’s very skilled at what he does. It’s very reassuring to know if whenever I have an issue with my current fit, he’s always there to make the slight adjustments. Love this place!

I’m 330 pounds and have issues with both my knees. Looking for a good way to exercise and lose the weight I stopped by Moment to discuss what types of bikes would be good for a guy my size. I made it clear I wanted a bike that could hold me now, yet still be a good bike for me once I shed all the weight. They spent about an hour talking different types of bikes with me, giving me more than enough information to go home and research on my own.
I setup a bike fitting with them. I highly recommend getting that done. I was skeptical at first but after sitting on the bike feeling okay and the gentlemen (his name escapes me right now) made three adjustments and I went from okay to holy crap this feels so much better. It’s a great way to find the saddle you want. I was super impressed. When my friend and I picked up the bike, they even did a quick ride with us to ensure function and the feel was correct.

Disappointed in service. Ridiculously overworked sales person/​bike engineer said their «fit» process, which according to a friend has risen in price more than 25 percent recently, could help me choose a bike and that he would call me or email more information after the 2-​hour fit process. It never happened. All I got was a piece of paper with bike measurements on it and a recommendation to buy any one of three very expensive bikes from the service manager to whom I complained. He said the sales person would call back a couple days later. This didn’t happen. I don’t think they genuinely care about their customers. The come-​on is if you buy a bike from them they will put most of the «fit» cost toward a bike, but how can you spend thousands for a bike without confidence that the seller has your interests at heart?
Two weeks later: To the store’s credit, representatives tried to contact me several times after this review appeared to «learn» they said what went wrong. But to be honest, and I’m sure they realize this, my complaints are pretty clear and of course it’s not my job to help them learn how to improve their processes. I did not receive anything written from their staff except a form that had my fit measurements on it, even by email. Yes, Cody recommended three expensive bike after the fit and told me he would send me the information about the bikes and answers to other questions I asked. These things never happened and my later calls to them were answered with apologies and no information. So I bought an expensive bike that they sell somewhere else. Look, it doesn’t matter what I think anymore. Even this review doesn’t matter. Most folks know that anything on the web should be taken with a boulder of salt. But know this Moment Bikes: When people come to your store, some of them my friends, they too will decide whether you provide «expert» and «caring» customer service for the money you charge. It’s up to you to prove it.

Moment has been nothing but helpful and patient with me! I first met JT when he picked me up on the side of the road after a failed attempt at a triathlon (rear dérailleur snapped). The shop fixed up my old bike and JT took literally 5 hours with me over two trips teaching me about how far bikes have come since I bought mine 8 years ago! I paid for the bike fit and am SO excited to be a proud owner of a LIV carbon bike! I’m also looking forward to learning more about my bike and riding with Moment. I will continue to push people to this bike shop. I’ve been to others in the area and no one has been as friendly as this staff. Thank you.

After struggling with my Retul Tri bike fit for a year I went to see Rachel to see if she could help me get a little more comfortable. There is no substitute for experience when it comes to fitting, and Moment is one of the few shops that do not depend on the computer to set position. Rachel dialed me on the fit bike and then transferred the changes to my tribike. The end result: faster (more aero) as well fresher legs on the run. I highly recommend you speak to Rachel if your in the market for a fit.

Triathlon specific bike store with variable customer satisfaction.
Good: High variety of bike selection and accesories. They carry hard to find bottles, gadgets, etc. They specialize in triathlon bike models. They have a high selection of wheels. The bike fit is detailed and comprehensive.
Bad: Occasionaly unhelpfull or rude employees.
Shop will push only their brands. My fitter became entirely unhelpfull after I wanted to bring my own bike for fitting. She asked for additional $ 125 on top of the $ 325 paid for the initial bike.
Recommend to research your fitter prior to scheduling.

I started going to Moment about a year ago and I didn’t think they could get any better, but after getting a bike fitting and purchasing my first new bike from them I was proven wrong. Vince did my fitting and went above and beyond his call to duty to help me select a bike that matched my geometry. Cody and August worked with me to set up my bike and didn’t stop at that. They asked questions and made me feel like I was part of their community. I could’t have imagined better service from my local bike shop! This is hands down, or should I say «wheels down» bicycle shop in San Diego. I was fitted with their «best fit» option as part of my search for a new road bike and all I can say is WOW!!! Vincent paid such great attention to detail and was in no way rushed to finish the fitting. When the fitting was wrapped up (3+ hours later), Vincent provided me with different bike options that would work for me based on my fit. Most importantly, the bike options shown to me where options that I didn’t even consider before the fit. I could only imagine had I not received the bike fit, I would have likely purchased a bike that wouldn’t have been the «best fit» for me and I wouldn’t have been very disappointed.
Believe it or not, after purchasing the Cannondale Super-​Six Evo Di2, I actually completed my first century ride only days after and I couldn’t imagine that I would have been more comfortable on my previous bike than on the one I purchased that was specially fit to me.
Last note, the rest of the staff at this shop are also great and all love to ride which also means they’re extremely knowledgable about what’s HOT and what’s NOT. Bottom line, you’ll be in great hands when shopping at this store, which also has a great selection of items to choose from.

Two uncomfortable years on a road bike that didn’t fit me taught me the value of getting fitted *before* I spend serious money on my ride. Vince fitted me to a bike that I had not even considered on my list and I could feel a dramatic improvement in comfort in the first 50 yards. Vince and Cody were great in educating me about fit and about their bikes and equipment selections. The mechanics were quick about fitting some last-​minute part upgrades that I decided to get before I took my bike home. Everyone that I dealt with was friendly and very knowledgeable. I’d recommend this shop without hesitation.

I got my first tri bike from Moment Bicycles and they nailed it. I am not, say, an easy-​to-​please customer because I want to understand the entire process and have every decision explained to me… which can be understandably tiresome. Lucky me, JT is the most passionate and patient bike-​guru in the business. My fitting was done by Vince, who fit me so nicely to the bike I feel I have been riding aero much longer than I have. And a shout out to Jim, whose expertise made the fitting come true. Thanks guys. You rock!

There are goods and bads to any bike shop and you basically just have to try it out for yourself much like a therapist or a doctor. You have to establish a common ground with your bike shop. It’s not one size fits all. That said, they can help with pretty much anything from mountain to tri to road. I do get the sense they focus a little more on tri than any others. The clothing selection is a little underwhelming but I understand problems with inventory and overhead. The store kits are amazing! But super expensive because they went with top of the line Capo. The bikes are reasonable prices so I wouldn’t say this is an elitist shop like something like AC in Marin, CA. The staff are amazing and they do bike fitting in the store too. I haven’t tried much of their maintenance but I think they do a good job. They’ll run sales every so often too which are pretty decent at 20−40% off.
But really the core of any shop is their staff. And here the staff is best of the best.

Moment bicycles is by far my favorite bike/​triathlon shop in San diego. Their selection, customer care and willingness to work with you keep me coming back. In particular, Vince is one of the employees whom I have spoken with on many occasions concerning questions I have in mind. He has helped me out tremendously in narrowing down my choice in the products I have purchased and i’ve never felt pressured to buy anything. Not once did I feal that I was being taken advantage of and have never left with a negative attitude towards him or the shop itslef. Anyone considering a reputable bike shop that will treat you like your buying a $ 10k bike all the time please come see these guys. You will not be dissapointed.

If you’re in the market for a new bike, this is the place to go. I made the mistake of buying a Cervelo from another dealer that made no effort to ensure that the bike would fit me properly, and even went to the extreme of setting the bike up in a bizarre manner just to make a sale. Lesson learned. If a shop doesn’t insist on a fitting prior to you selecting a model and size, or if they tell you they can fit you to any bike, leave immediately! The people at Moment are professionals who know their stuff and will tell you the truth without any pressure to buy. I recently purchased my second bike from Vince because he is a top-​notch fitter and he is supremely trustworthy. On my most recent buy, he went out of his way to get me on the right bike and to save me money. He even went to the trouble of calling the local BMC rep so that I could test ride a hard-​to-​find bike before making my final decision. Rachel patiently assisted my with my component selection, presenting all available options along their pros and cons. Even after a meticulous fitting and deciding upon a specific geometry and size, Vince called me during the assembly to let me know that they discovered that I needed a different size. Who else would do that for you? Nobody. The build by their professional mechanics was incredible, and it fit and operated perfectly on my first ride. And the owner JT, who is friendly and easy to talk to, is clearly a guy who is operating a business for the right reasons (not just to get rich). Don’t even bother looking elsewhere.

Best bike shop in San Diego, and California, and probably in the US! Ive had horrible experiences in other shops in SD and will never go anywhere else or trust anyone else to touch my bike.
Rachel is an expert bike fitter and takes all time it needs to fit you on your current bike or fit you for a new bike. It has made a world of difference to me, a novice cyclist with no experience on a road bike. Recently ordered a Parlee Altum R and had never had so much fun!
Everyone is the store is very helpful and knowledgable — from nutrition to equipment to maintenance and parts — they have everything you need. Cant say enough about everyone here. Highly respected and quickly becoming my new BFFs

Awesome bikes and service!
Highly recommend the state of the art Bike Fit they offer to get you on your perfect bike and in your perfect riding position. From novice to experienced riders, from just cruising the roads to triathlons, their staff offers countless years of bike experience to get you on the road and keep you on the road.
Highly recommended, I visited the store looking for a road bike for training and triathlons. Worked with Vince with my price point and the Bike Fit, which pays for itself, so who would say no. Turns out the Bike Fit recommended a different sizing then the basic eye would suggest with my long torso, a different saddle for my fellas and my shoes needed wedges to align my peddling due to my pigeon toes and bowed knees, haha. They had a great selection to choose from, top of the line brands, I picked an awesome carbon bike that came in and was adjusted to my riding position within days. Got all the gear I needed for riding and a triathlon wetsuit with a discount. It’s awesome they give military and addition discounts and free life-​time tune ups with a bike purchase unlike the bigger stores. What proved priceless was the expertise they shared with me and the relationships that followed after. Vince, JT and the group were honest and didn’t try up or down sell me something I didn’t need or want. They have weekly riding gatherings, always a good time when I come in and they remember who you are.
I’m beyond satisfied with my bike today and the service Moment continues to provide. I’ve brought in friends to get their first road bike and they say the same about their experience.
