I was craving Hawaiian food and didn’t want to head to L&L so I came here. I ordered a mini shortrib and a chicken katsu masubi. The place was empty(just two people besides me) but it still took a while for my food. I grabbed some extra soy sauce(they didn’t have individual packets, I had to pour some into a little plastic container) and off I went. Grrrr. I opened up my short ribs and I was surprised at the small portions of the starches. I have never been to a Hawaiian BBQ place that was stingy on the rice or mac. And I had ordered all mac, but got rice. Double grrr. The short ribs weren’t very flavorful — they were heavy on the soy sauce and didn’t have much else of a flavor. I did like the mac salad, but 4 bites of mac salad… are you kidding me? The katsu chicken in the masubi was ok but nothing special either. Guess I’ll be heading to Mrs. Rice the next time I want Hawaiian food in Kearny Mesa.

Food sucks very bland. I ordered a combo plate w/sea food and beef short ribs, it came w/the worst sea food some old mahi mahi and 2 shrimp and the smallest piece of short rib that was mostly fat 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of mac salad. It looks like they are skimping on ingredients IMO mac salad taste like plain noodle w/a little mayo. Take my advise and go to L&L or Da Kine and you will get real Hawaiian bbq. Better quality and better portions. This was my first and last visit sorry guys but I never try poor food 2 times, seriously either need to make it better or just quit. Try your food how you really serve it and you will know it sucks. All the reviews saying they have good food is probably lying or have no taste in good food. Just wanted to update and add that this place is no longer there, goes to show you serve crappy food you won’t be in business very long.

Their teriyaki beef is better than Mrs. Rice. But there are some advantages that Mrs. Rice has over Maui Maui: –Maui Maui has no beni shouga. –Maui Maui’s serving of macaroni salad is smaller than Mrs. Rice.

I just ate there for the first time today. There are a few indications that I should have noticed earlier to let me know this wasn’t a good place to eat. First of all, my boyfriend and I walk in to find the workers the only people sitting in the customer table area. Second, it was lunchtime and there was no indication that anyone had been there before me(ie. napkin on the table or a piece of rice on the tables). Third, one of the workers came back with food for everyone else from SOMEWHERE else, meaning it wasn’t even good enough to eat there. Anyway, we ordered BBQ beef saimin, spam musubi, and Kahlua pork. It was terrible! I felt like I was an old person who lost their sense of taste. There was no flavor to the food and I even doused it with soy sauce. Sad to say, I’m never going back! I can give one positive thing about this place though — the prices aren’t bad. So if you can sacrifice good food, then you’ve got yourself a good deal!

pros. if you are looking for some pretty decent hawaiian food in the clairemont mesa area, look no further then maui maui hawaiian bbq. this place took over the yakimono restaurant’s space. the place is still pretty new but the food is good ol’ fashioned maui style food. they were attempting to put in a nice large lcd screened tv when we went today. now for the food, we ordered the chicken cutlet with gravy, and my wife ordered the bbq pork, we also ordered two spam mitsubis. all the food came pretty quickly. my dish was the chicken cutlet, but the twist was the sauce, not your typical tonkatsu sauce here, it was gravy, with two heaping mounds of rice and some macaroni salad just to break things up. my wife had the pork bbq, delicious grilled flavor with a sweet and savory sauce. yum. they have your normal selection of fountain drinks, as well as a whole host of hawaiian island drinks in cans. and the spam mitsubi was ok too. cons…not the neatest place, but then they were trying to install a huge 42″ lcd tv. and the place was pretty hot and humid, but it is summer. besides that the place is great. and no real issue with parking either.
