Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade

This is a great place to bring your family and friends to walk and talk — and learn about the wisdom of the man who’s dream should live on. Nice walk, close to some great restaurants, and interesting with the various interjections of creative city space.

Im not sure if im the first person to say this but its a great place to walk a dog. They have inspiring MLK jr. quotes along the walk way. Its kept fairly clean. Walk there if you dare.

Nice park a couple of minutes short of a walk from Gaslamp. The metro comes by occasionally, which can make for nice photos with the SD convention center in the back.
There’s a lot of homeless people around this park although they’re usually sleeping. Walk down further the park and you can see quotes from MLK Jr. along with some art installations and quotes on the ground. There’s also a jungle gym! I recommend visiting this park if you are near the area.

It’s a clean dog friendly park. Not really serene as the train/​trolley is right next to it. There are random bums, like any downtown park but it’s always clean!

Come take a stroll or a run on this lovely promenade that begins close to W Market Street and ends around Park Dr. I always take my dog for her walk here because it’s away from the cars, except 2 crosswalks. She meets so many of her 4-​legged friends along the way and makes new ones too! There are plenty of FREE poop bags available and garbage cans to dispose of their waste.
As you stroll along this lovely promenade you can read quotes by MLK, view the public art, relax by the water fountains, or bring your pet to play on the grassy areas which are abundant here. Oh can’t forget all the great photo ops here, especially on a sunny day… which is almost everyday.
I enjoy this path to reach the Gaslamp District and East Village (to avoid a lot of the traffic lights), the Convention Center, and the Embarcadero Park South. It runs along the train tracks, so at times it can be a little noisy. When conventions are in town it can get busy, but for the most part, it’s not crowded.

Probably my favorite place to walk with my dog in downtown SD. It’s a good way to get from the marina to the heart of the gaslamp if you’re walking because you can bypass most of the downtown traffic. There’s only two intersections where you might have to stop to let cars through. It’s a short walk, about half a mile but with plenty of nice sights, quotes, and monuments to honor MLK’s legacy. On any given day you will see people walking through with strollers, joggers, convention visitors, and people walking with their dogs.

Great place to go for a jog or take a nice leisurely stroll! Very nicely landscaped area and inspirational quotes from MLK Jr along the way.

How have I been in downtown San Diego so many times and not stumbled upon this until now? This is a lovely walkway where every so often there is a MLK quote in the concrete. I was trying to get a workout this time through, so only caught the first line of each one as I whizzed by, but I will definitely be back to take a more leisurely stroll and fully take in the message. What a fabulous idea and a fitting monument to MLK.

On any nice day — which is, uh, most of them in San Diego — you can come here and see what King was talking about. You’ve got people of all races, colors, creeds, and nationalities walking here.
You’ve even got creatures of the four legged variety strolling around here. Some of them are walking their «owners,» others are being walked by their owners. If you have a dog, I hope you’re in the latter category.
It’s really a great place to just saunter around and enjoy San Diego.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. And some of you have come from areas where your quest — quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive. Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: «We hold these truths to be self-​evident, that all men are created equal.»
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

This is our hope, and this is the faith that I go back to the South with.

With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:
My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.
Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,
From every mountainside, let freedom ring!
And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.
And so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.
Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.
Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania.
Let freedom ring from the snow-​capped Rockies of Colorado.
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.
But not only that:
Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee.
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.
From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
