Last year our nanny quit with less than 24 hours notice. Then a few weeks ago we got a letter from the California Franchise Tax Board that said we owed $ 3500 to them. Our former nanny was referenced in the letter, but otherwise we had no idea what the notice could be about. The only instructions on the letter were to «detach this portion with your payment» and the only phone number on the letter went to an automated message that began, «We can not help you understand why you have received this notification». There seemed to be no way to find out why we owed the money or how we might contest the charges.
