STAYAWAY from Lava — you’ll get screwed in the end by them! I belonged to the Point Loma location and LOVED the gym… until i showed up to work out and there were Budget Rental trucks hauling away the machines and TVs. I called and was told they sent me a letter two days ago. Nope, no letter, no email, no notice. They transferred our memberships to another gym that I looked at previously and didn’t join — and now i’m suck in a contract with them b/c of Lava’s piss-poor management and customer service. I’m glad the trainers seem to have moved to the gym they transferred memberships to, but only b/c I didn’t want them to be unemployed. I passionately hate this place and can’t warn you enough to stay away — the owner has zero idea how to run a business and should just pack up all of these gyms and call it quits.

STAYAWAY from Lava Fitness Boxing Gym!!! I’ve been going on a Groupon and while the trainers are cool, the good people at the DMV have better customer service skills than the front desk management. My third visit to the gym a manager whom I had never spoken to couldn’t be bothered with traditional greetings such as «Hello, how are you? Are you enjoying yourself?» All he said was, «So what are we doing?(as in, are you getting a membership or not?)» Today, I was chastised for calling to make an appointment with a trainer without going through management, a procedure which was never explained to me. I showed up for my session only to discover that my trainer was not allowed to work with me b/c he had to change the toilet paper and perform other maintenance duties. «Did you think you could make an appointment with the cleaning staff??» asked the manager. I can accept their strict adherence to appointment protocol, but it would have been nice if they 1) respected my time enough to call me and let me know that my session was cancelled before I wasted a perfectly good hour going back and forth to the gym; and 2) informed me of the proper procedure w/o that nasty tone. Does he think that just b/c I’m moving to DC I’m a worthless customer??? Ha! The immensely satisfied/dissatisfied customers are most likely to provide reviews. Guess which category I fall into??? If you want someone cool to hit the mits with w/o the additional harassment I highly recommend that you find another gym.
