Huy Ky Bakery

Huy Ky is my favorite place to pick up mooncake here in San Diego. Locally made and hopefully does not contain a lot of preservatives like those mooncakes imported from overseas, they make respectable pastries and make their clients feel good about supporting San Diego local businesses. Over the past few Mid-​Autumn Festivals, we have gotten our mooncake from Huy Ky, and the owners even gave us free lottery tickets for our purchases as an appreciation. Keep up the great work!

Yum! I had my first taste of Chinese desserts in San Francisco, and was happy that I could get similar things here in San Diego! The service was great, the price was good. And everything I’ve tried was wonderful! I’ll be coming back for sure, hopefully the case will be more full of things to try!

Well I Decided to walk in and look around to see what kind of Pastries they got and I was quite surprised with what they carry. If your looking for a Bakery shop that carries That special type of Pastries or donuts then your in for a Surprise because they dont have that type of Pastries. But what I can say is there Moon Cakes are one of the best out there. Overall it gets 3 out of 5 for selection not to much of a selection so if your looking for that special Moon Cake then this is the place but if not then I would say pass and try somthing else !!

This review probably isn’t fair since the bakery is known for their mooncakes (which come out full force around the Lunar Festival — approximately September of each year). I’ve visited this bakery once before during the Lunar Festival and they were completely sold out so I haven’t had the fortune of trying their mooncakes.
The bakery is located on the less developed/​older side of University Blvd. It has its own small lot, guarded by a strong iron fence. Both times that I have walked into this bakery, I’ve been less than impressed by the glass case and interior. There were hardly any items in the glass case, none that looked impressive. They have a few pâté chauds, steamed pork buns (that didn’t look all that fresh), and a few slices of cake that looked repackaged and not that appetizing.
The man we met was kind enough, but overall it isn’t much to look at inside or out. We purchased some beef jerky (Vietnamese style), but otherwise I can’t say that there is much to write about this place. My husband claims that this is the go to place for moon cakes but you’d think they’d make some effort during the rest of the year.
Looks like you can order cakes from them, but I’d be less inclined with the other options in San Diego. We’ll have to return when it’s the end of the year for the Lunar Festival.

Have to say Unilocal reviewers were right on the money about mooncakes from Huy Ky Bakery. I purchased a box (containing four) of the red bean #18. Fantastic! Just the right amount of sweetness and moisture to the point I get flashbacks of my youth! So delicious — I am almost willing to sacrifice a little of my waistline, widen my pants and wear loose shirts (ha!).

San Diego is so lucky to have this Vietnamese bakery that put out incredible Mid Autumn Moon Festival cakes. I come here every year and purchase two boxes to celebrate Tet Trung Thu even though it is a 20 miles round trip from my home. These are made fresh here instead travelling thousands of miles and steeped in preservative like the ones imported from China or Taiwan. The quality of the these cakes are amazing and you can taste with every bite. There are about 20 different kinds of little cakes and infinite combinations. I couldn’t wait until tomorrow night and just cut into the first one. Ohhh my mouth was filled with an explosion of sweetness, saltiness and nuttiness. There was sesame seeds, lotus seeds, almonds, cashews, egg etc… I can’t wait to try the other ones but those will have to wait until the full moon tomorrow (9÷30÷2012) and it will be consumed with a fragant pot of jasmine tea.

It’s been a while since I’ve spent Tet (New Years) at home, but this year we thought we’d go big… and what better way to spread luck and joy than through food! I bought at least 10 of Huy Ky’s Banh Chung and Banh Tet to give out to relatives. Huy Ky was known for having pretty good Banh Chung, but when we opened them — we were utterly dissappointed.
Banh Chung should have a tint of green (if it’s made right) — since they’re wrapped in leaves and steeped in boiling water for several hours. All the ones we opened were as white as newly cooked rice — a sure sign that the time and effort were not put into this batch.
It was dry, lacked flavor and was the saddest start to the new year ever. My mom filled up her suitcase to the 50lb limit with these to bring back to my grandmother in France and poor lil grandma was soo sad when she took a bite.
I am sad to say I will never go back to Huy Ky again.

I really dig this place. They have plenty of parking and the store is located right off the main street.
My favorites are the mung bean glutinous cake, taro cake, and the winter melon bean cake. These are the most well made desserts of this type I’ve ever eaten. I come here whenever I’m in the area even though I could buy their cakes in the OC.

These are the best Moon cakes in the world! I can not control myself when grren bean moon cakes are in the house! Do not buy your moon cake anywhere else but from this place. Every year my family makes the 2 hour drive to buy moon cakes from Huy Ky.

My husband and I are obsessed with their Banh Deo glutinous rice cakes in strawberry, black sesame, coconut and honeydew! Next time we are in San Diego we will definitely be at the bakery. Fortunately, for now we can buy these cakes in our hometown, Philadelphia, at the asian grocery on Washington.
Oh no! We just tried the mung bean cakes! So. Good.

Moon cakes are delightful pastries made for the Mid Autumn moon festival period. Traditionally stuffed with a lotus seed paste filling and a salted duck egg yolk, these pastries go great with a nice hot cup of tea.
Huy Ky distributes their moon cakes all over Southern California and even though most businesses start to cut corners when they reach a certain level of success, Huy Ky has managed to maintain the same high quality in their products.
They also do wedding cakes and make other sweets and treats through out the year.

Back in Vietnam we were so poor the flies surrounding my bulging malnourished stomach were working overtime as pets. But every moon festival my parents would act ballerific and order moon cakes. But these moon cakes were hard and I had to split one moon cake with 20 people in the village. Baht hia in Ah-​me-​lica I get my own cake!
This place seriously takes away 10 years of my life but every year for the past 5 years I have been buying my moon cakes here. Who cares if they’re over 1000 calories for just one small cake? It tastes damn good! My favorite is number 3 box, it used to be for $ 18.00. It is the thap cam (everything) with 2 salted duck eggs. OMG Is that good! I prefer buying the cakes here instead of the supermarket because the Vietnamese in me thinks that it will be fresher that way. Definitely recommends it as an awesome addition to tea parties or as a gift during Moon Festival.
P.S: Come the day after moon festival and all cakes should be 50% off or buy one get one free. If they don’t do it here they usually do it at Vietnamese markets. Freeze these cakes and your cravings will be answered year round. You can thank me later =)

I love Huy Ky’s Banh dau xanh. I am pretty picky about sweet mung bean cake but those little square wrapped in plastic was delicous. Both Smell good and taste so good and so cheap! I did nt know Huy Ky is located in San diego, I used to go to Viet grocery in Boston just to get that when I am craving for sweet. Now I am back to town, LA and I love to visit Huy Ky sometimes whenever I am down to see my sister in San diego. I love to have Banh dau xanh or Banh bia for breakfast with a big hot mug of Tea. Yummy

I think they manufacture their fine Chinese baked goods here. (Maybe Vietnamese too?) I’m obviously no expert, but I did take in some nice big fat cultural learnings the other day. I wandered in and found none of the usual goods. Instead they were selling scads of these «mooncakes». Mooncakes are pastry traditionally eaten during the «Mid-​Autumn Festival», the eastern version of a harvest celebration. So I bought a package of mooncakes and ate them outdoors under the open moon as I was instructed to do. The mooncake is really impressive. I think it had about 20 ingredients, including salted duck egg yolk. And really good. I think it was a good harvest year this year.
On top of all that, they gave me a free lottery ticket with my order. It was a losing ticket, but if I had won, I’d have bought a ton of mooncakes.
