With over 40 years of fishing/​spearfishing industry knowledge, Owner/​Captain Evan Wagley and Captain Michael «Woody» Wood bring a wealth of knowledge to each of their charters. Whether drifting San Diego Bay for halibut, freediving spearfishing the kelp beds for white seabass, or paddy hopping offshore for yellowtail, dorado, and tuna, we will get you on the fish!

As a family owned business, we take pride in customer service. If you are a seasoned angler, experienced spearfisherman, or just a beginner, we want you to have the best experience while on the water with us!

History

Established in 2013.

Guardian Charters started as a dream since the tender age of 12, when I received my first pinhead job on a local sportfishing vessel. Growing from a single center console to a 2520 Parker, we have become one of the premier sportfishing /​freediving /​spearfishing charters in San Diego!

Business Owner

Captain Evan Wagley is a San Diego native with a vast amount of local knowledge. He grew up fishing from his surfboard, then upgrading to a fishing kayak, then upgrading to multiple skiffs, ultimately landing on a 25′ Parker. Evan is passionate about being both on, and in the water. An avid freedive spearfisherman, Evan continues to share his love of the ocean with his customers!

Had a great time! I love spearfishing, it’s my favorite hobby and I am from Newport Rhode Island. So it was my first time in the Pacific shooting and the captain and crew were extremely knowledgable about the species we were targeting and the ones we couldn’t. Everyone on the boat was educated on safety and regulations before entering the water. And we were brought to multiple spots to try and find varieties of fish. And to top it off at the end of the day I received a bag of filets from what I shot! In conclusion I had a terrific time with guardian charters and definitely plan on going spearing with them again on my next trip!

Best time on the water, woody is super fun and got us a nice bloody deck. The only charter to go on in SD. Found nice us nice catch of yellow tale during the slow season. They just got a new boat cannot wait to go try it out.

Our family had a great experience on Guardian. We tried spearfishing while snorkeling. Despite being very inexperienced, Evan talked us through the entire process, showed us how to use the gear and stayed with the group while we snorkeled. We didn’t have much luck spearfishing so we broke out the rods and reels and Evan made sure we got some good fish in the ice chest.
It was an amazing ¾ day trip out to the islands and we came home with some fresh fish. We even saw a humpback whale and he slowed the boat so we could watch it jumping around for a good 15 minutes. Awesome trip, great fishing guide and very reasonable price. Can’t recommend Guardian enough if you want to get fish in the boat.

We went out with Evan for the first time yesterday. He is truly an awesome captain. We went out for an evening lobster dive. While we are comfortable freediving we are new to lobster diving. As novices, Evan gave us tips and put us in front of a lot of big bugs. We had so much fun that we’ll be back again for more lobster in two weeks. Really awesome and memorable experience, can’t say enough good things about Evan and Guardian Charter!!!

Went out with capt. Woody last week had an awesome time. We went on a family trip with three noobs one of which was my son ten yrs old and two vets on the tuna grounds. Couldn’t ask for a better capt. he did everything he could to put us on fish and we caught yellow tail and tuna on a very slow day for everyone else. We went home with 14 fish which was more then enough considering the grade a tuna we caught. I would recommend this charter to all class of fishermen young and old.

I went out with some friends on my first tuna fishing trip. I’ve been on other rock-​fish boats out of Oceanside so I kind of know a little about fishing. Captain Evan knows his stuff! When we showed up, he already had bait and was ready to go. His speedy boat got us out fast and we were pulling in Blue Fin before 7:00 am. Although I know a little, I learned a lot from the one trip with him. I caught about a 25 lb blue fin, and the rest of the group each got one or two. In all we had around 11 big fish including one Dorado! I would recommend captain Evan and Guardian Charters. It’s very personal service and he really takes care of everyone. Even when things get hectic on deck, captain Evan keeps calm with helpful tips and tricks.

Great experience overall. With around 35 years of experience fishing, Captain Woody knew what we had to do to catch fish. His technique caught us some very large yellowtails that we couldn’t be happier with. The boat we were on was very nice and well equipped. We were out all day and had a blast.

Best 4 pack fishing charter on the west coast, by a mile! Evan and Woody will get you on the fish every time. These guys really love what they do. The boat is always filled with positive energy and smiles (and lots of fish). Ive been on a few trips now with both Evan and Woody and each time i get back home i count the seconds to my next trip out with them.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve fished your whole life or never at all, you will have the time of your life. They will make sure of that. I grew up fishing, take my word for it this is money well spent.

Such an amazing time going out with these two guys. Woody is super funny and has a good time putting people on some good fish, he took a lot of time teaching me techniques I need to lay into the fish I want. Evan is one of the nicest people I have ever met and does anything in his power to help teach you anything you need to know. Both great guys and cannot wait to go out with them again. Stoked on you guys.

Yesterday was hands down one of the best days of my life and by far the best day of fishing of my life. These guys put us on BLUEFIN TUNA on April 1st!!!

We chartered this boat with captain Woody for my Husbands birthday. We brought along our 9 year old daughter and 11 year old son. From the first step on the boat Woody made us feel welcome. He was AmaZing with our kids. Very patient and helpful with them. I can’t rave enough about the experience we had. This was totally a five-​star experience and we will definitely be doing it again.

I took two trips with Evan in June 2014. Evan is an excellent fishing guide and is very good at finding fish. Both of my trips were successful spear fishing trips and I learned a lot about diving and spear fishing with him.
Evan’s Parker boat is incredibly clean and well maintained and runs great!
The second trip was a memorable one to the Baja Coronado Islands. The Mexico license process was a smooth one, well managed by Evan. Mexican law enforcement checked our papers on the water and they were on their way.
Evan was with me in the water for an entire morning and I shot and boated my first yellowtail. A lot of what I learned really paid off in my home Gulf waters and translated into success there later on that summer.
He is an incredibly accomplished fisherman and is a very safe diver and boat captain. Looking forward to the next Cali trip.

Can’t say enough good things about these guys. Always friendly and on point. Oh, and they know where the fish are. Capt. Woody is a certified fish whisperer. Clean & comfortable boat that is usually limited to 4 anglers means there is plenty of room on deck to spread out. Highly highly recommend booking with these guys.

I had an amazing fishing trip with Captain Evan and Guardian Charters. He’s very knowledgeable about everything and has a ton of experience finding great fishing spots for all types of fishing.
I’ve been on many charter boats ranging from the big commercial boats to smaller long range boats for multi day trips and I’ve never caught as many huge fish as I did with Guardian Charters.
I highly recommend fishing with Guardian Charters if you’re looking to catch a ton of great fish to fill your freezer and have a few «big fish stories» to tell your friends about.

I have been fishing California’s waters for over 30 years. I’ve worked as pinhead and deckie on some of the same boats many of you have fished on before. So I know a good boat always starts with the owner/​operator. Captain Evan Wagley of Guardian Charters fits the bill of a professional skipper who is first and foremost a fisherman. He is well known among local fishermen and has a great network, especially helpful on days spent looking for those paddies.
We had the pleasure of coaxing Evan to take us spearing at San Clemente Island. Not a lot of coaxing actually needed but what an epic 2 day trip of freediving the island’s hotspots and finishing with an epic bluewater paddy day.
When you want a change from 40 guys elbow to elbow and even get a chance of slipping into the water for a yellowtail or lifetime dorado, book a trip with Guardian Charters.
Relaxing fun times, serious fishing and freediving. What a combination. Go Evan!!!

Hands down best fishing trips I’ve been on have been with Guardian Charters. I’ll never forget the first trip I took out to the Coronado Islands with Cpt. Evan. We pulled up to the island and the first spot we stopped at to jump in the water, we were right on top of a school of yellowtail. These guys put you on fish like no other! They truly care about their customers having a great time.

Evan runs a great rig. He is extremely ‘fishy’. He impressed all of us on the boat, and we are all fisherman.
When we arrived Evan already had the boat loaded with bait, snacks and gear, including spear fishing gear that we didnt get a chance to use because of the conditions. But he was extremely eager to get one of us our first fish with a spear gun. NEXT TIME!
During our trip the fish werent biting like they had been a few days previous and all of the local fish counts reflected that. However, Evan put us on fish and we had a great day. We had the high fish count out of a lot of boats I spoke to later that day.
Evan runs a clean and safe operation and would recommend him to anyone, new or a veteran angler.
