Gaslamp Museum at The Horton-Davis House

awesome treasure found. the lady and her dog were so accomodating; love the sweet dog. unlike the whaley house, one can go through the rope and be immersed in the house. a strong maternal energy envelops the entire upstairs; nothing to be frightened of. my daughter and i will surely be back. thank you for taking great care of this important san diego gem.

We did the house tour during the day, as we were with our 12 and 7 year old. There is a sign out front that the home is included in the nightly ghost tour, and that sign alone freaked my kids out. But, they were intrigued and I thought it was a perfect way to have a mini history lesson while we were on vacation.
When you enter, you actually start from the basement, where a friendly employee/​volunteer lets you know the cost to take the house tour. We walked around the tiny souvenir shop, then paid our $ 5 fee to tour the house. It’s a self guided tour during the day and we were the only visitors at that time. As we were alone, it was cool to be able to go at our own pace through each of the historic rooms and not bump into other families. Lots of interesting things to look at from other eras. Lots to read about the history of Mr Davis, his life and his family.
The house itself is a beauty, I’d love to live in one of these, just not this one in particular as it does give off an eerie feeling, like someone is watching you. Of course, we already knew that this house was part of a ghost tour, so I’m sure the creepiness was our own minds psyching ourselves out.
Nice little piece of history in the midst of downtown San Diego. Nice tree shaded area adjacent to the house, where locals were taking naps on the grass an on the benches.

After Lunch and Between events at Comic-​Con we wandered by this old house, the sign leads to the Museum shop in a lower level so the daughter and I decide to take a look, there is small room with some information on the house and the area and a couple of things to buy, a docent let you look around and informs you that the self-​guided tour is $ 5.00. Daughter asks if there are ghosts, she is informed that there is a paranormal team that is based out of the house and we decide to take the tour,
We are the only ones on the tour and while it is a small house and only took us about 30 minutes it was very interesting, unlike many historical home tours you could walk into most of the rooms and get a good look at the displays and set up, We didn’t see any of the reported ghosts but probably like everyone else in town that weekend they were over at the convention center waiting in line for a panel, perhaps next time we go we will get a chance to visit with one or more of them.
Do you like old houses, do you like history, do you have 30 – 60 minutes to spare, and are you in San Diego? Then you will like this house, as an added bonus they have a nice shaded patio where you can sit and rest, they have a statue to Bum (The Official San Diego City Dog) and Greyfriars Bobby a gift from the City of Edinburgh Scotland one of San Diego Sister Cities.
And if you are lucky (and it’s not comic-​con week) you just might get to see one of the resident ghosts.
Another of the hidden gems of San Diego

If you’re looking for a touristy spot to take your family members from out of town to,
I highly suggest coming to this museum.
In all honesty, it’s such a hidden gem. It’s in Downtown, but sort of the «outer rim», if you will. Let’s just say, there’s not THAT much foot traffic in this area. If you were to see this museum, which is a house/​one of the first homes in San Diego, you probably wouldn’t think much of it.
There’s a $ 5 fee to take a tour, but if you’re part of a military family (active, that is) then you get in for free. We did, at least.
The fun part is being able to read the pamphlet that is given as you’re in that specific part of the house. History is spectacular, take advantage of the less popular parts of San Diego!

Intriguing history to this old house. Would like to get locked in for two hours but I don’t know if I could pay 45 dollars to do so. But 5 dollars is definitely worth the unguided tour. A little confusing as some of the rooms are roped off and some are not.

This is a quick fun $ 5.00 that really let’s you walk into time to another man’s house. He really knew the value of San Diego. I wonder if his ghost sometimes visits and sees the change of his city.

If you enjoy history this is a great place to see in the Gaslamp. The museum staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. If you are a history buff, go see one of the oldest wooden structures in the city!
On a side note, It was interesting to see the inside of a house from the 1800’s. You can see how short/​small people were back then by looking at the height of the railings on the stairs, the placement of door knobs, and the size of the doors. The house lets you look into the past.

We rented the picturesque courtyard, affectionately referred to as Pocket Park, for our wedding. Definitely satisfied the «something old» tradition! The location was perfect with hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc all nearby for the guests. The staff was amazing! We were pretty much given carte blanche and our party was perfect, just right for a small wedding (we had about 30). They kept the museum shop open, which is where the restroom is located, and it was kept clean throughout the event. They would have kept the museum open for an extra fee but we opted out of that, I was just sure I would knock over something priceless onto my wedding dress. I especially love that they didn’t run everyone off at the end of the night while we were saying our extended goodbyes. I often stroll by the park when I’m downtown. It’s still a little respite, and I love knowing that it has been and will be there for a very long time.

Fascinating house downtown San Diego with lots of history. From 1850’s and decorated as such. Lots to look at downstairs, on main floor and upstairs. Little spooky as this house was on those ghost hunting shows and we got some strange pictures there along with spirit orbs. People working there are friendly and answered all my questions. They have a wonderful walking tour on Sat morning of the gaslamp area and you learn about other historical places downtown.

I am always on the quest for a good creepy cemetery or alleged haunted house. I had wanted to check out the William Heath House for ages and finally did this year. Being that it is in Downtown parking can be sort of a bitch, but on this day I was able to park across the street from it. $ 5.00 gets you in and you are able to look around as long as you want. Not a very big place so your time there can pass quite quickly. The place is really not oversold as a haunted house like say. The Whaley House, which I sort of like. It allows you to come up with your own conclusions. I was disappointed to find that many of the items that exist there were brought in, and not from the actual house but I guess that comes with the territory of being old and having things become lost or destroyed over time. I really enjoyed my time their and took lots of pictures. It was a peaceful place that you could tell had something a little off about it. I have never really felt anything about the Whaley House that makes me go ‘Yeah this place is haunted’. This place did in its unassuming way. I am glad I finally got to experience it, and with the locale being where it is, it is close to eateries and other downtown goodies while you are there. Check out The Horton Grand Hotel too, it is close by. Worth a look

This is a cool little museum. It’s the oldest house in San Diego and its been physically moved 3 times. The museum is more about the time the house was built and the development of San Diego than the house itself.
It’s only $ 5 and self guided so you can show up anytime during their hours and walk around. A great stop if you’re in the Gaslamp district.

The hubby and I went on a haunted ghost tour when we visited San Diego. It was a MUST since we are all about the paranormal. We visited many places & the Heath House was on the list!
While in the cozy little home we were brought back through time via stories from the curator/​staff that night. After hearing the history and paranormal claims, we were allowed to browse through the downstairs area and take LOTS of pictures (check out what I’ve uploaded).
After we got back from our trip we went through our photos and were surprised to find some odd little things. Maybe we were just looking for the misplaced, but we loved the whole experience that this historical little gem gave us overall– during our visit & well after!

Totally recommend visiting the William Heath Davis Museum if you are into local history and/​or the paranormal. 4 stars!

This is a really interesting little museum. I learned a tremendous amount about the history of SanDiego and walking through the house was like a trip back in time.
The staff were incredibly friendly and a great resource on all things San Diego.
Seeing the nine distinct rooms and some of the antiques in each room are more than worth the $ 5 admission charge. The history of the GasLamp district is unique and it is great to see these people trying to preserve it.

This is a real Haunted House in Downtown San Diego.
To visit the house it’s a low $ 5 admission and once paid, allows you to walk through the building for as long as you want, (until they close that is). Not as creepy as the Whaley House in Old Town, but it’s still goosebump worthy.
Their hours are Tuesday-​Saturday 10am-​6pm for self-​tours or you can attend their guided walking tour on Saturday at 11pm. The walking tour runs $ 10, but it also covers other downtown haunted locations.
The house was originally built in 1850 and is supposedly the oldest house in downtown San Diego. The ghosts that inhabit this house range from a Victorian woman who stands atop the staircase and children who inhabit a playroom upstairs.
I would suggest this place to anyone interested in haunted houses. It’s never mentioned on any of the ghost specials on television, but for $ 5 it’s not a bad price compared to spending over $ 10 for a fake haunted house.
