Dirty Dancing

This is one of the best plays that I have attended this year. It was live and upbeat as the performers were amazing. I enjoyed the scenes, screen back drop of the lake, field that gave this performance flavor of reality for those of us watching the play. I would see it again!

I’ll get to the chase: besides that famous ‘nonsenses line,’ I have to say, I was very IMPRESSED with Dirty Dancing. I thought, it was exactly like the movie: spectacular, very slick, and nothing short of extraordinary.
I had a hunch Dirty Dancing was going to be special, so I was amazed,‘ooohed’ and ‘aaahed’!
I saw the musical on tour, at the Academy of Music, In Philadelphia a couple of months ago. I have to say, it was one of the top plays I’ve seen recently. I had a fantastic seat, second row from the pit. I saw every facial expression, and there was a genuine chemistry between the cast, all were on point and never missed a beat. Also, as we all know, fans of the classic Dirty Dancing movie, the songs were catchy, with heart-​pounding rhythms. The audience, including me, were humming to «I’ve had the time of my life!!»
Dirty Dancing runs for 2 hours and 25 minutes with one intermission, and I could have stayed one more hour and not blinked an eye. It was very much worthy of a night at the theatre. I guarantee you a wild good time! Take my word for it.
Yet, I wonder why it didn’t make it to Broadway?!!

I loved the movie, so thought this show would be just as good. It wasn’t. I give it 3 stars for the music (I’m happy I got to hear parts of my favorite songs from the movie) dancing, and acting. I expected Johnny Castle to be a hot stud like Patrick Swayze, and instead it’s a guy who’s my height!!! Of course that throws it all off. They just didn’t match as a couple. Some parts were corny, prop wise, but I still liked it nonetheless.

My first Broadway show ever was in New York about 15 years ago. I saw Beauty and the Beast and I was blown away. Unfortunately, I don’t remember too many details about the show since it was so long ago but, there’s something to be said about seeing a Broadway show in New York City.
I didn’t know what to expect with Dirty Dancing. I don’t think it’s fair to compare Dirty Dancing to a show like Beauty and Beast because one requires elaborate costumes, props, and scenery while the other does not. Of course the costumes and the scenery are going to be pretty basic for a show like Dirty Dancing. Sure, there could have been more creativity with the backdrops, but overall I thought it was alright.
The acting was engaging and the dancing was on point. There could have been more originality to the choreography, but I understand that it’s supposed to mirror the movie. The singing was pretty strong for the most part. There was one guy that stunned the crowd with his voice (he sang «Time of My Life» at the very end with one of the actresses). He definitely was the best singer in the show. I’m kind of surprised at the 1 star reviews, but it sounds like the people who gave them have a lot more Broadway experience than I do and have higher expectations. Maybe I’ll feel that way after seeing more shows.

I have been to many shows at the San Diego Civic Theater and Dirty Dancing was by far the worst! Basically everything said by Amber in the first review was spot on. The plot was weak, boring, and cheesy. There was hardly and singing and the dancing was far from spectacular. I felt it was the quality of a high school show if even that. Very disappointing. I cant comment on the second act because i also left at intermission.

Let me start by saying that I love the movie «Dirty Dancing,» love musicals, love the Civic, have been a season ticket-​holder for most of the past 20-​years, and usually don’t write reviews of the shows we see, but we were SO disappointed by Dirty Dancing. Over all these years, I think we’ve only walked out on 2 at intermission, and this was one of them. Why?
Really everything about it was horrible — the writing, acting, singing, chemistry — even most of the dancing. That was the biggest shock. We thought at a minimum, the dancing would be spectacular, but really, even though the cast may have been good dancers, the choreography wasn’t very good, and most of the dancing was not very entertaining. They also inserted a civil rights aspect, which I’m definitely in favor of, but seemed very disjointed, forced and contrived in the show. On top of that, some of the sets were so cheesy that the audience actually laughed at them. I wish we’d saved the money and re-​watched Dirty Dancing on Netflix in the comfort of our own home.
