Designer Glass & Shower

What a HORRIBLE experience ! I used this place previously and had an ok experience and they’re near my neighborhood and like to support local businesses. 1^st visit to my house a designer took measurements etc and said he’d get back w me in a few days. After numerous calls and no call backs I spoke w office mgr who apologized. Said she had to fire my rep and other people in her office and they would send a new person out– they did and the new rep asked if he could take my mirrors back to his shop to save him a trip– to be accommodating I agreed — weeks go by and no call or follow up– I again call and leave two more messages and finally get a call back — another apology — I agree to do the job rather than getting my mirrors back from the shop– they tell me they want 50% down on ccard– they put 80% down without telling me– they finally book the job weeks later and tell me the day before they want to change it to accommodate THEIR schedule — the guys show up and have no idea where the mirrors go ! Wow — poor communication and business practices

I just recently got married and the only thing that my Wife really wanted for her wedding present was the most awesome Shower ever so I granted her Wish and let my contractor design a very special one of a kind Shower with curvy glass and the whole 9 yards later to find out that finding the glass to make it a reality was not easy… After calling several glass places all over we finally called DG&S out of the Yellow pages. They answered right away and assured me that my Wife’s wedding present would be completed without any problems. Well they came out for a quote and soon as we gave them the Green light the princess got her wish right away and is Thrilled. I never knew a piece of glass could be such a big deal — Great Job and thanks for saving the day DG&S…

I can’t speak to the quality of this business’s glass nor their craftsmanship as all I needed from them was a pair of shower door rolling brackets but I will say this: Lowes did not have what I needed and they did. After calling a few shops around town, I found Demitria, the young lady who answered the phone, to be very sweet and helpful. I emailed her a picture of the brackets since the ones I had were already installed on glass. She found them in a catalog, called me back very quickly, then called again to say she had some in the shop. She put them aside for me and I picked them up the next day. It was easy, she was friendly, and there was no hassle. That earns a solid 4-​star from me!

I’m usually a rabid supporter of local businesses, but sorry, this one does not pass the test.
This shop used to be known as «Golden Hill Glass and Screen» and is now called «Designer Glass and Shower».
A few years ago, when this place first opened, I had a number of good experiences with them, but I think along with the name change came a new dysfunctional management or ownership.
I went in 4 times over the last 2 days. This shop is one of the few that would cut the pre-​war wavy glass that we need to do a correct repair job for our old houses here. They usually had a stock of the glass, when I went in they were out of stock which was fine, I understand that. But the guy’s (grey hair) attitude was about the worst I’ve ever seen in a business, and I was a theatre buyer for years, going into 10 – 15 different types of stores per day, usually with some oddball need. Grey Hair ended up calling me a «smartass» because of the tone in my voice the third time he asked and I answered the same yes-​or-​no question in the space of 2 minutes.
So I went to the Architectural Salvage store in Little Italy to get some of the glass, I found the perfect piece, which came in a wood sash that I had to spend an hour getting unframed. Back at the shop that afternoon, they could not cut the 2 pieces then and said they’d do it early tomorrow, and would call me about 9am.
Next day, 11:45, no call. I went down there and the job was «done». I paid and took it away, The smaller piece for a friend’s front door was cut too big, they had mis-​measured. Went back and the second guy recut it. Later that afternoon I got to the second piece, I didn’t realize it until I had gone and puttied the whole thing in that they had switched glass on me to a modern piece, they had obviously cracked my special piece and thought they would not mention it and slip one by me. By that time it was too late to switch it, since it was for an outside window that I didn’t want to leave open for another night.
I did go back to complain, the first two guys were not there, a third guy was in the back and I walked in on him talking on the phone to someone, he was saying «…I really F_​_​ed up that job…» (not talking about my little job, of course) I decided rather than ask for my $ 15 back that I would just write a review on Unilocal.
I’m really sorry I can’t write a good review on this local, independent business. They seem to be very scattered and sloppy, their place is quite physically disorganized. You don’t just keep random crap and unrelated tools on your glass cutting table, its a sign of disrespect to your trade, and its no surprise that you break a piece. But lying about breaking a piece of «customer’s own glass» is inexcusable. I’m going to have to find another place to do this work. Alpine Glass out by La Mesa does, Hate to have to drive that far.
