Dr. Chao performer Laparoscopic surgery on my shoulder to repair a torn Labrum, Bony Spurs and Frozen Shoulder. It has now been 10 weeks and I am back on the tennis courts, lifting weights and doing all of the physical activities I did prior! I am extremely happy with the procedure that he performed on my shoulder. His expertise and attention to detail was very impressive. His skill and experience definitely contributed to my successful healing. I would highly recommend Dr. Chao

If there were a lower rating, I would definitely use it. Please, please, please find a different doctor. I am 48 years old and went to see Dr. Chao because I had been diagnosed with a bulging disc (MRI done) and pain in my hands, particularly my thumb joints. I was treated with such disregard for my health by Dr. Chao I was shocked. After he walked in and talked with me for about 1 minute he could see how swollen my thumb joints were and he said «let me go look at your x-​rays again», which I suspect was actually the first time he looked at them. He came back to tell me I have the joints of a 60 year old and that was it. I asked him about treatment for my bulging disc and he said he was not at all concerned about that and 25% of the population has a bulging disc anyway. This bedside manner for a patient who IS concerned about her bulging disc and the joints of a 60 year old at 48 is atrocious. To top it all off, his bill for seeing him less than 10 minutes was over $ 500.00. DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR!!!

Dr David Chao performed an Surgery to repair my torn ACL suffered during basketball. It’s been 2 years later and I’m back to full basketball and stronger than ever. Thanks to Doctor Chao. It’s not an easy road. The rehab is very tough. You need to really want it.

Spent as little time as possible with me.
Never asked if I had any questions or if I understood what he was saying.
The office is scummy.

I’m a marathon runner who could no longer walk due to some kind of injury. After seeing the doctor several times and doing many tests, he gave me a steroid shot and when that didn’t work, he said he couldn’t help me and didn’t know what was wrong. He also suggested i see a psychiatrist b/​c the pain was in my head. Yes, an elite runner was «making the pain up». A month later, I found a different doctor that figured out I had two 1.5 inch sports hernia holes between my legs and my pelvis, bilateral torn adductors, and a torn oblique… a week later, that doctor performed surgery. I now just finished a 50 mile race this weekend. Moral of this story… DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR!!! He just wasted my time and only relied on tests to show whether or not I was injured… instead of actually understanding what was going on. VERY UNHAPPY!

Thank you, Dr. Chao, for the surgery performed on my son’s foot. I appreciated your competency, and the correct recommendation for the type of surgery he needed. His recovery time was cut in half and the x-​rays showed a perfect realignment of critical bones in the ankle and foot. I feel very fortunate to have been directed to you by our local doctor. It was absolutely worth the drive to San Diego from Temecula. Before I go, I do need to commend your excellent staff — we felt in wonderful hands all the way.

Worst doctor ever! Does not answer questions, does not spend any time with patients. Terrible. Do not go to him. Both my wife and I saw Dr Chao and both of us had the same experience. Terrible.

I’d like to heartily recommend David Chao, MD, Orthopedic Group, or Oasis MSO, or Oasis Sports Medical Group, as I knew them a few years ago when they were there for me in a big way. I had received an on-​the-​job injury, and my family doctor treated it as a knee sprain. I went back to work, but it was getting no better and, after 2 weeks, I still couldn’t fully bend or straighten the knee. Two months after the injury, I finally made it to the top of the MRI waiting list, and found out that I had a completely torn anterior cruciate ligament and a large medial meniscus tear in the left knee. While waiting for an appointment with the HMO available through my employer, a coworker who was on light duty after an orthopedic surgery asked me where I would have surgery. He suggested Oasis Sports Medical Group in Kearny Mesa, where he’d had his done. When I found out I could swich my provider to Oasis and still have it covered under Workman’s Comp, I was amazed. «Really? I can have MY orthopedic surgery at a place that specializes in fixing injured professional athletes? You’ve got to be kidding!» I called for an appointment the next day, and the whole thing went so smoothly after that. Those guys are great! They had everything I needed in one place… the surgeons, support staff, X-​Ray, MRI, lab draw capability with courier pick-​up by an area lab, operating rooms, anesthesia, a discharge pharmacy, home use of high-​tech medical appliances issued right there after surgery, physical therapy, and follow-​up appointments, all under one roof. Wow! I didn’t know there WAS any place like that! My surgery and recovery period went off without a hitch. Roughly two years later, at age 46, I went through a 16 week law enforcement academy. I not only qualified for entrance, but passed with flying colors, actually out-​running 75 percent of those in the twenty-​something age group in my company. This on a knee I had torn up and had surgery on just two years before!
Their stated mission at Oasis is «to get you back in the game.» Dr. David Chao is the Head Team Physician for the San Diego Chargers, the Team Physician for the USA Rugby Team, and Chief Medical Officer for the ESPN Summer and Winter X-​Games, as well as several other sports organizations. He and his team of providers specialize in the entire gamut of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. Some of their past patients include Phillip Rivers, Tony Hawk, Junior Seau, Drew Brees, Sean Canfield, Reggie Bush, Bill Walton, Todd Cleaver, Charlie Joiner, Marshall Faulk… and me. How about that? I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the «little miracle» you performed on my son Grant’s ankle. Today, only a couple of months after surgery, he is walking around and feeling great.
I also appreciate the bedside manner of the entire staff there at Oasis. That was nice when you came out after the surgery and explained to Grant and myself what had happened, how it went, and what we could expect. That is a nice touch. Grant also mentioned your concern and help in his follow up visits.
In closing, I know you guys do these surgeries all the time and it might become run-​of-​the-​mill. Well I can vouch that it is not run-​of-​the-​mill to the person receiving your care. It is by far the most important thing in their life at that moment.

BE CAREFUL BEFORE UNDERGOING SURGERY! I had heard of Dr. Chao’s experience and reputation so when both knees were really bad, I went to see him. First, it’s a testimony to his success that his operation is like a factory — dozens of patients waiting to see him. I have excellent health insurance (yeah, yeah, I know… but I did relocate 3,000 miles to get it). I waited about 90 minutes and was finally ushered in to meet with… another doctor, obviously lower on the food chain. Got a 10 minute consulation and was told I no doubt needed both knees partially replaced (and I’m a young person, that’s a huge deal, as they only last about 15 years). Dr. Chao came in for a whopping 5 minutes to confirm what I’d been told, smiled, ordered MRI’s and left. On my SECOND consultation, same deal — waited hours to see the junior doctor (a different one) then waited some more… then finally, Dr. Chao gave me a cortisone shot (which left me unable to walk for about 36 hours and had no other affect) and told me I would need both knees partially replaced. This is uncharacteristic of me, as I tend to think of my doctors more as gods, but… I decided I would apply that co-​pay to an exercise studio instead, to get some low-​impact strength and see how long I could delay. 18 months later, I just had a consult with another surgeon who told me… that I’d done EVERYTHING right. Everything includes my choice of exercise and not having had that surgery. He also spent a good 40 minutes with me, going over all my xrays and MRI’s in detail — which I realize no one had done with me at Oasis. Ultimately, I might need those surgeries, but not yet. I am really thankful that I did not proceed any further with that monolithic medical practice. If you’re a celebrity, a millionaire, or a running back with the Chargers, I’m sure your experience will be radically different. But if you’re none of the above… consider carefully.

I came here in 2001 and had surgery for my knee. It was BEYOND what I expected-​I didn’t even know WHAT to expect but this place catered to all expectations.
Getting in for the appointment was a breeze, and I’m lucky enough to have great insurance so… I was there to see Dr. David Chao because I heard he’s the best, he was.
The staff is absolutely awesome. Upon diagnosis the doc diagnosed me but in the process my knee totally popped out of place and had me in tears with pain-​the staff were nothing but nice, kind, and understanding. One of the nurses even offered to beat the doc up for making me cry-​BUT it was necessary.
The diagnosis was that I needed surgery and they were ready to book me for THAT week! Also-​all their services are done on site. I believe the second floor is for the doctors office and the first floor is the surgery and recovery center.
I have come here more than twice for myself and have referred 3 family members and we can all tell you–
Easy, fast, convenient and professional. I will always come back, God forbid!

What a relaxing and comforting experience. First off, thank you Refugio G. for Unilocaling about Dr. Chao, as this is why I chose to go to the Oasis Group in the first place.
His staff is friendly and light-​hearted, even first thing in the morning. Dr. Chao himself was very kind and had excellent bedside manner. He listened intently to my questions and answered them thoroughly as well as suggested therapy for my broken foot.
I also had some back and forth with an insurance approval for my pharmacy, and the nurse was nice enough to provide me extra samples to hold me until the issue was resolved.
Overall this was an excellent medical experience, and though I hope to never have to go to an orthopedist again, if I did, I would happily go back to Dr. Chao and would highly recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Chao is a very good Sports Orthopedic surgeon. I broke my ankle in two places training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he had me up and walking in less than 2 months. Of course therapy is rough, but it has helped me tremendously.
Dr. Chao was first recommended to me by my friend Dr. Rommel Llantada of Llantada & Mar aka San Diego Center for Health. When I first made my appointment, Dr. Chao gave me the basics of the ankle and then showed me my xray results (which were two bones snapped in two) he gave me in detail what my two options were (cast only or surgery) and what each one meant. I opted for the surgery as I needed to get back on my feet asap and wanted to also get back into BJJ asap for a major tournament.
As far as the surgery went, I had major swelling, but recovered at a decent pace, but the swelling was horrible. I am now in physical therapy which at time feels as painful as when I broke the ankle. His staff is very professional and know what they are doing.
