Culture & Cocktails

Wow my hubby and I had such a great time tonight. It seems the museum has these get togethers once a month Culture & Cocktails with different themes and this month was the Art of Music.
Immediately upon arrival we heard a DJ playing music as well as a violinist. As we entered we were given drink tickets and entered the already crowded foyer.
We started with tapas which was very savory ahi tuna on tortilla chips. Next we headed for desserts from Blush Bakery. There were macaroons and an assortment of mini cakes. Let’s not forget the signature drink of the night Tito’s Vodka «pear-​cussion» and saison beer tasting from Duckfoot Brewing.
We then proceeded to tour the museum minus food and drinks as they are not allowed near the exihits. I wish I was able to take pictures of the new artist of music exhibits however that was a no no too.
We were then given headphones for a silent disco. This was amazing there were two DJs play music and every person at the silent disco had on headphones and could listen to two types of music and we danced most of the night away.
This was so much fun I can’t wait for the next exhibition. Great job San Diego Museum of Art.

The other reviews here are super weird. I suppose I knew what I was getting into, and if I suspected it would be something else, maybe I would have been disappointed, but I enjoyed it.
The culture part is that it’s at an art museum. Most people were not looking at the art. Partly because drinks weren’t allowed in the galleries because DUH. It seems some people don’t appreciate certain types of art. But it’s an art museum. So I intended to see some art, some of which I liked, some of which I didn’t. Mission accomplished. The museum actually had a lot of hidden galleries and I wish I had given myself more time to explore because I didn’t realize how many there were when I arrived. The special exhibit was pretty cool.
The cocktails part was fine. I got there late, so I didn’t have to wait in any lines. I waited maybe 5 minutes to get my free, themed cocktail, which was some sweet drink with some cotton candy melted into it, which was cute for the theme of Coney Island. The other bars had really good liquors for decent prices. I paid $ 8 for a Buffalo Trace on the rocks, which isn’t unreasonable for a decent whiskey at a fancy event.
It was pretty crowded and a bit of a «scene,» but the little photo booths and things were fun.
It would be cool if they coordinated with Panama 66 or the Prado to stay open a little later so people could grab food after the event.

Last night Culture and Cocktails — Coney Island. These are always fun, but last night they ran out of all the food. The event was 6 – 10, and they were tapped by 7/7:30! The drinks were delicious though! I would have never thought to put cotton candy in a cocktail! The exhibit was actually really interesting and all the photo booths were a blast. Overall it was a good event. Not sure if I’ll be going back to another one anytime soon though…

Poorly organized.
I’d heard great things about this event from friends who’d gone over the last few years, mostly about the cocktails part. I did not have the same experience. Instead of buying tickets for just this event I decided to get a household membership to the San Diego Museum of Art. Once I showed up…
The good:
–there is art
The bad:
–40 minute line to get my free ticket
–another wait to get in the building
–JAM packed with people, very overcrowded
–no drinks allowed in the galleries? (they should have called it «culture or cocktails»)
–the free food consisted of only: sliced pizza that was constantly and had lines stemming from all directions so it made for some uncomfortable conversations w/​scantily clad idiots accusing people of «cutting»
The ugly:
–some of the modern art, but that’s to be expected.
It felt like being in a club on the weekend… lot’s of people and lot’s of lines. After an hour of standing around we bailed without having one drink or any food and went to the Prado for happy hour.

I seriously abhor the fact that they call this event «CULTURE» & cocktails. Like, I get the cocktails part. But did they REALLY have to throw the culture part in there? It’s like, they’re highlighting the void of culture/​diversity in San Diego by offering it only (1) ONE night every 3 – 4 months. Heaven forbid if they offered it more times per year, everyone in San Diego would turn into a lib-​tard and all hell would break loose — it would be a communist’s dream and a capitalist’s worst nightmare!
The basic formula you get is a club/​party vibe in a chic museum setting. Sooo… I can’t say there’s «culture» there in terms of diversity. However, in San Diego, apparently it doesn’t take much to be considered cultured.
Soapbox moment aside, I have a good time every time I go, as it’s a change of scenery from the blah blah of Downtown, North Park, PB etc etc.
