Courtyard San Diego Downtown

Though by name this is a Courtyard, just walking into the lobby you are greeted by a setting that is far more elegant. The customer service, from the valet, to the front desk, and every other employee you meet is top notch. Of all the great places to stay in San Diego this is by far our favorite and will definitely by staying here again.

Great location in Gaslamp, walking distance to a lot of things, beautiful hotel and good bar for food and drinks. My complaint isn’t about the hotel it’s about the management. Let’s start off with you are in Gaslmap in San Diego. This is a hotel that is around nothing but bars, clubs, and partying. If you are looking for a quiet getaway this isn’t the place. I was here this past weekend celebrating a friends birthday and we were playing music at 7:20 pm in the evening while we got ready and wanted to listen to music to get us pumped up for going out. All of a sudden we get a knock at our room and we open the door and the manager says rudely, «I been standing out here for 5 minutes, this is your first and final warning to lower the music.» ummm excuse me? No hello, no asking nicely to turn down the music? First and Final warning? Is this a way to treat your hotel guests? I think not! Then the next night, Saturday around 5:00pm the security knocks on our door and says they can hear are music from down the hall by the elevator! Oh my gosh people we were not blasting it like high school kids, we are mature adults here. Saturday night comes around and we have a letter on our door and it says if you don’t lower the music the hotel is going to ask us to leave the property. I will never stay here again. Absolutely ridiculous!!! If you want to have a good time be prepared for management to have a problem with it. Look elsewhere.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel! We made a reservation and was put on the lowest floor in the back. When we got to our room things were nice, clean, decent size room. What we later experienced was that the housekeeper’s supply closet was the door right next to ours because we were in the very back. All day and all night the door would randomly slam from housekeeping using their closet. The machines in the back of the building for AC/​heater/​generator, water, whatever it is back there was making noise too. Our room faced the other buildings surrounding the hotel so the windows in the room had the bottom half covered so you couldn’t see outside into basically the nasty alley, where the machines, garbage etc are. It was hard to get sleep between the noises outside and the constant slamming of the door out in the hall. Very disappointing for spending $ 500+ for the weekend. If you are going to put someone in that room, let them know, or give them a discount of some sort? I called and tried to get another room but they said they were booked for the Holiday weekend. Their website, Unilocal and Expedia offer these amazing views, ya if you confirm that’s what you are getting when you check in and evidently pay extra for it.
Other than our room being a huge disappointment, the hotel location is nice, you are literally in the middle of everything for downtown and Gaslamp. The staff was friendly but not helpful… if we go back, definitely going to check another hotel out, lost faith in this one.

We stayed for one night. Valet service ($ 40 overnight) was helpful and was on their toes whenever we came out to request for our car or return our car. Very enthusiastic people; I’ve overheard them talk casually with each other and they’re entertaining, haha. One of them was saying inappropriate words, which I don’t mind considering I’m not high-​class or have high standards, but I could see and understand why some people might get offended, so maybe that could be a downside (not on my case though).
Hotel was big and aesthically beautiful. Room (~$ 168 + additional $ 40 for other services) was roomy, but at the same time compact and clean. The view from our window kind of sucks though. You just see the buildings and people walking around; also we saw lots of «crazy» people doing things out on the streets at night. Of course, it didn’t bother me as much since I was on the 2^nd floor. Bed was super soft and comfy, bathroom was nice, but pretty basic. They got a desk, pens, and notepads if you need it. The night stands next to the bed has outlets/​plugs and stuff if you want to charge anything next to you. TV was huge, but not a lot of good channels (I believe you have to pay extra for movies and such). Hotel food was pretty good as well. When I booked the room, I booked it with free breakfast for one morning. Breakfast was good, but it might bother some people that it’s also really oily. My omelet was oily and my boyfriend’s sandwich was oily as well. Not sure about other dishes, but if you plan to eat here, I’d ak about the amount of oil they use if you’re concerned about that. Also, I’ve made a few calls to the hotel here and there, before, during, and after my trip to San Diego. They’re quick to answer the phone and are very helpful with all of the questions I’ve asked. Overall, really nice hotel to stay at. Would stay at a Marriott hotel in the future.

I debated back and forth between giving it a four or five star rating. I chose four based on a few things which I’ll get out of the way before I talk about how awesome this hotel is.
Our view from the room looked out to a brick wall. This can happen at many hotels in a city, plus, it’s not like I went to San Diego to sit in the room gazing out the window. I really never understand why people get so hung up about views, but I know it’s important to some people so I dinged them a bit for that.
When asking for recommendations for dining, etc. Twice we were given little cards from restaurants that had discounts and the hotel employees names written on them. I certainly have no problem receiving a discount, or free dessert or free appetizer, etc. I also don’t mind at all that the restaurants provide some kind of benefit to employees for referrals, however, I expect the employees to listen to what we’re requesting. For example, we asked for a good italian place that was inexpensive. The front desk agent whipped the little restaurant card out of her pocket and gave us her recommendation. Sorry, but an average price of $ 30 per entrée does not qualify as inexpensive in my book.
The good stuff is, despite the improper recommendations, the staff at this hotel is amazing. The front desk, the valet parkers, the housekeeping, the bell desk employees were all extremely friendly and attentive. They seemed as if they loved working there.
The hotel is incrediblely beautiful. Built in the 1920’s as a bank it had much old school charm, but was decorated in a somewhat minimalist style. The designer did an excellent job of blending the two. The room was modern, clean and comfortable.
The location to the Gaslamp district is perfect. The hotel is built right at the end of the district which provides easy access to all the fun and excitement without being in the middle of all that craziness.
I highly recommend this hotel and will definately go anytime we’re in the area. The sign may say Courtyard, but it’s actually a luxurious boutique hotel. Do yourself a favor and choose this location. You’ll be glad you did

Great location. Staff was a bit snobby.

Have I ever stayed at the Courtyard downtown? Nope. Why am I giving them 5 stars you ask? Because of one of their employees — Robert. I came home from being on the East Coast for 5 days, at the end of a work day, and my car was completely dead. Robert found jumper cables and helped jumped my car. This was no easy task for a variety of reasons that I won’t bore you with.
Suffice it to say, if you stay at this hotel, you can bet that you will have amazing, over and beyond, customer service. I wasn’t even a guest, and I still felt very looked after.

Such a «Shining» vibe here. I love this place. The valet is a bit pricey but try to find a package that includes the valet. The rooms are a bit small for the price ($ 260 on a Saturday night,) but it IS downtown SD near the gas lamp. The service is wonderful and the bellboy was fast and efficient. I will definitely stay here for any DTSD events. Make sure to bring your own water and get food elsewhere. Other than that, this place is a mini luxury getaway.

Had a good stay, except for two major discrepancies. Before I move on, this room was booked by my father.
1) I had put my own card down for incidentals, therefore if I needed any extra amenities I can pay for them myself. Now I was aware my 2 water bottles would be $ 16 total, but I was not aware that they had charged my FATHER’s CARD! Its not about the money at all, the point is this: What if a friend had booked the room for me as a courtesy? How would it look if I were spending their money?
2) I called the front desk at 8:43PM on 9÷21÷15, front desk woman was polite. She had to transfer me to the «supervisor» on duty, and I had explained the situation to him. He went on and said «Well there is nothing I can do,» I knew he wanted to get off the phone ASAP, but the LEAST one could expect is an apology. The entire conversation, this man had no understanding, nor any sympathy. Look I get it, I worked front desk, people make mistakes placing card numbers, they are only human; but when you know the hotel was at fault by not charging my card, and charging my father’s, I expect an apology.
PS: We stay at Mariotts’ enough to earn platinum elite status, so they usually upgrade our room. I understood they were booked so that was not a possibility, but when I asked for a rollaway bed, I was charged for that as well. On the receipt it only shows the charge for the water bottles. Get your stuff together staff, the hotel looks amazing so you can’t lack quality in staff.

This place is very elegant since it used to be the first bank opened in San Diego. Check out the original vault, which has now become the conference room. You can also check out the telephone booths with the original phones inside. This place is a living part of San Diego history. The rooms were adequate and clean. They even had water filled with fruit in the lobby which was simply delicious. Also in the lobby, is a starbucks for all your coffee needs. The hotel is in the heart of downtown, although there are occasional homeless people wandering around it. Overall, this hotel is great!

The No1DP and I stayed here on his one-​week visit during Comic-​Con 2015. In exchange for working a day at the con I got all the fringe benefits of being the girlfriend of one of the vendors — which means a nicer bed and reduced commute time to work.
LOCATION: A block from the historic Gaslamp Quarter and a 5 – 10 minute walking distance from the San Diego Convention Center. I felt safe walking outside the hotel at night.
PARKING/​VALET: Umm… good luck. NO onsite or offsite parking affiliated with the hotel. Valet is $ 40/​day. I was super grateful for this as this reduced both my prep and commute time to work.
Protip: Make sure you have your original receipt that matches with the name of the guest of the room. One of the attendants refused to give me my car even after I showed him my license (but not my ticket) as my name wasn’t the name on the room (it was the No1DP’s).
CHECK-​IN: Formerly the site of San Diego Trust & Savings Bank, the lobby, waiting area and bar looked like the site of a bank. It reminded me somewhat of Gringotts. The front desk staff were very friendly and greeted me as I walked towards the elevator.
ROOM: A refrigerator was included but I was rather disappointed that the temperature felt rather lukewarm throughout the whole night when I placed leftovers inside even though I adjusted the temperature setting. Thank goodness my food didn’t spoil.
The room has all the essentials of a good room: free wi-​fi, comfortable bed and outlets in the lamps right next to the bed. I also had my two favorite stuffed bears with me and finding the housekeeping staff rearranging my bears about the bed was an added cute touch.
BATHROOM: For the most part a small standard bathroom but my most favorite item in the room is their coffee maker. The coffee’s already premade in a small bag and the creamer/​sugar is included, all that’s needed is to boil water. As I had to be at work early in the morning and the Starbucks didn’t open until after I left this was *much* appreciated and got me through the morning work.
BAR: The bar serves two functions — serving a limited Starbucks menu starting around 6am and an actual bar beginning in the afternoon. I took advantage of the bar several times during my stay. They had several beers on tap: two safe brands (ie Bud Lite) and some craft beer brands. It was my first introduction to Belching Beaver — one of my most favorite SD beers. They also had seasonal Comic-​Con cocktail specials; one of their cocktails had sprinkles in the glass affixed by a syrup.
The No1DP and I recommend this hotel as a good hotel for Comic-​Con due to its location and proximity to SDCC and Gaslamp restaurants/​bars.

I don’t give a lot of hotels 5 stars. Might have been our room choice. We had a deluxe king. Hotel itself is grand with marble walls, polished wood finishings, etc. definitely an antique vibe but very modern in terms of comforts. Rooms are spacious, extremely clean and well appointed. Beds are firm and comfortable. Room service was delivered within 5 minutes and ridiculously affordable. Check in check out process was easy and fast. The walls are well insulated so I heard nothing of the other guests. Valets were prompt. Not crazy about being charged $ 40 to park but that is San Diego for you.

Great hotel in historic old building. Very clean. My reason for the poor rating is for their misleading & confusing website. I booked a free valet parking package, or so I thought. I clicked the the button that corresponded with the promotion & selected a room. Everything was fine til I got the bill at the no of our stay. They charged me $ 40 for parking! I was so mad & they weren’t willing to reverse the charge due to their stupid website. I wouldn’t steer u from staying there cuz the place rocks. Just beware when booking any promotional packages, & triple read what the page tells you before you confirm.
Another negative was that the bathroom did not have any ventilation, which is gross when you’re trying to have a special night with your loved one.
Also, noise is easily heard through the walls, & that’s never a good thing.

The biggest pro of this hotel is its location. It is walking distance to all restaurants/​bars/​shopping in gas lamp district. Valley parking only and priced around $ 40. Very nice serice and clean hotel room. We love the high ceiling and city view.

Just the history behind this hotel made it a really exciting and fun stay. The front desk clerk gave us a brief rundown of the history of the hotel and then we were off exploring on our own. It’s a great location, but parking is a little pricey. I was hoping to see a ghost or two, but no such luck.

Bottom Line: More of a boutique hotel than a typical business travelers Courtyard, this historical hotel is charming and conveniently located in the Gaslamp District.
After a very busy year of frequent business travel I have learned a lot. One thing I have learned is not all Courtyards are created equal. I often stay in Courtyards for business but when traveling for fun I always try to stay at Kimpton boutique hotels. On my recent extended weekend in San Diego I found myself at the Courtyard Gaslamp and this experience did not disappoint! Here is why this Courtyard experience was unique and delightful:
— For starters, the location of this Courtyard is in an old bank and much of the original architecture and charm is still intact. Beautiful high ceilings, marble walls, elaborate wood trip, etc. The charm extends from the lobby into the rooms. For example, my corner room had six huge windows (including the one in the bathroom).
— The location of this hotel is great for exploring the Gaslamp and San Diego. If I had to pinpoint the social center of the Gaslamp Quarter I would say it’s at 5^th and Broadway. This hotel being located at 6^th and Broadway is also super central to the fun. If you are wanting to explore other parts of the city like Balboa Park, the convention center or the Midway, you are only about 1 to 1.5 miles from those locations. It’s an easy walk or a quick cab (or pedi-​cab) ride.
— The rooms are very comfy here and you can expect the standard, clean and fresh, all white Marriott bed. I loved having a corner room and found it to be plenty spacious. I also appreciated having a decent size bar fridge and microwave. I see other reviewers noted small rooms and bathroom doors that didn’t offer privacy but that wasn’t my experience so I think it just depends on what room you get. Being located in an old building, I suspect the rooms are not cookie-​cutter like most Courtyard hotels.
— The staff was very pleasant and actively engaged in providing excellent customer service. We exchanged conversation with the valet, front desk and housekeeping and everyone was warm. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to hang out with the bartender but I appreciate that they have happy hour until 7pm since so many happy hours end at 6pm.
— Speaking of valet parking, I ditched my rental car and opted to walk and cab the city. I didn’t see much need for car based on my itinerary of hanging out in the Gaslamp, taking the passenger ferry to Coronado and strolling about Balboa Park. If you do want to park your car here, think its $ 40 a night which is about the going rate for downtown San Diego. If you want to stay at a Courtyard and want free parking, I recommend the Liberty Station location which is also nicer than your typical courtyard but not historically charming like this locale.

We just stayed the last two nights here, and this hotel is excellent. This is our second stay here. The rooms are spacious and SPOTLESS. Really clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. Every staff member I encountered, just passing, in the elevator, the housekeeping staff, all asked how our stay was going, if we needed anything, etc. I love the bar in the hotel, and the location is perfect. If you plan to valet, head down sixth street towards Broadway.
I only knock off one star because the parking is a rip off at $ 40 a night. There are a couple of parking structures/​garages in walking distance we plan on using next time we stay there.

Wonderful service here!
The only complaint was the mattress is harder than most (which took a couple of nights to get used to). Otherwise, I LOVED everything about this hotel. The historical grandeur (historical bank), the quick and helpful service from check-​in to the bar to the valet, the location. Wonderful!
The rooms were nice and perfect amount of space for my taste (1 King Bed room). They are doing some outside renovations, but I never noticed. I also had no issues with hallway noise on the 9^th floor, and I was close to the elevators.
Food is great for any meal of the day! Just be sure to get there earlier on a Sunday when EVERYONE checks out at the same time.
Book this hotel at least a month in advance to get a better deal. The weekend prices are quite high for a last-​minute check-​in.
It is walking distance to all of the action in the Gaslamp Quarter and an easy drive to Coronado Island and the Airport.
I do think $ 40/​night valet parking is steep, but steep downtown parking prices are hard to avoid in any Cali city.

I came here for a week for a conference down at the convention center. This hotel is in a great location for walking distance to the center if you don’t mind a 15 minute walk in the morning. It is also centrally located among a ton of restaurants and bars (Gaslamp District) which is really nice for before or after work.
The hotel itself seems like it is an older building that was converted into a hotel. You can tell based on the walls/​windows/​doors. That doesn’t however take anything away from how nice the rooms are! I stayed in a king room:
–The bathroom was huge
–The bed was comfortable
–There was a couch, desk, chair and flat screen tv
–The AC worked great which was nice given the warm weather
Outside the room itself, the hotel was well kept and the staff was kind when I checked in. It was also super easy to get a taxi on the way out on the way to the airport which is a nice plus.

This is a cool location. It is a converted old bank right in the heart of downtown. There are plenty of food and entertainment options within walking distance. The only notable downside for me was the parking. They only offer valet. There are third party parking options nearby, but not many that are convenient.
The lobby has high ceilings and great décor. The staff was quite friendly and helpful through out our stay. Our room had a good view of the city. The décor inside was not quite as interesting as the rest of the hotel, but it was just fine. The bed was comfortable. They had USB charging ports on the lamps in the room. This was handy for charging our phones.
We will definitely utilize this location for future SD visits.
