We first worked with Laura Wever at Courtesy Mortgage in 2010 when we were in desperate need of a refinance to work out some financial issues, and she was wonderful to work with. She guided us through the process and was great about answering our questions, providing options and explaining what we needed to know to make good decisions. A couple of years ago I refinanced from an adjustable loan into a fixed, but paid the price in points. My CPA recommended that I refinance again to get back some of the points on my taxes.
I went online to Quicken Loans and entered my information to receive a quote. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go through the hassle of refinancing again so I didn’t take it any further.
Justin started sending texts and email and calling me to ask if I wanted to move forward. He wasn’t pushy at all, just made it clear that he wanted to help.
On a Friday, I heard the rates would be increasing the following week, so I gave Justin a call. He immediately jumped in and locked the rate over the weekend, so I was not only going to save on my taxes, my rate was reduced more than a quarter point.

What can I say… Justin Sheftell with Courtesy Mortgage was a dream to work with. I have owned 6 homes… all of which have been partially financed. Nobody holds a candle to Justin. He knows his stuff, usually responded to my inquiries within minutes, and understands the process better than anyone I’ve ever worked with. I DEFINITELY recommend Justin. I posted a question on Zillow regarding UFMIP that my then broker told me «he will explain in detail later.» I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t like having to wait for an answer «later.» Luckily, Justin answered my question on Zillow, which is how I found him.
Honestly, at first I had no intention of using Justin’s services, and just contacted him to ask a few more questions regarding his answer. I asked him for a GFE, and it was immediately provided. Even though Justin knew I did not plan on using his service, he still gave me prompt detailed responses, and updated me on daily rates upon my request.
When my then broker could not offer me a competitive deal to match Justin’s FHA quote, I decided to ultimately take a chance and use Justin even though his numbers seemed too good to be true. I am so glad I took that chance because it saved me money in closing costs! Throughout the whole refinancing process, Justin answered my many questions (no matter how ignorant they may have seemed), and gave me well thought-​out responses. From start to finish, he was there to address all my concerns. It really felt good to know that I had an expert on my side handling my application. I am so impressed with his professionalism.
After working with him, I would not hesitate to recommend him to family members, friends, and coworkers. I don’t even live in San Diego and never met Justin — everything was done through email, except for the final signing that was done with a notary. My loan closed on time as promised, and the numbers did not change much from the original GFE. I wanted a refi (HARP 2) and thought my existing mortgage holder would be the quickest. WRONG. I gave up after more than 6 months. I gave Laura from Courtesy Mortgage a call and she said it was a cream puff loan, no issues at all should be fast to close. Well, she got me a FANTASTIC rate, and it closed in less than 2 months, and would have been quicker but my existing loan was sold right in the middle of this process! She kept me up to date and it just could not have gone better.

I had been procrastinating on looking into getting a refi on my condo. I was underwater, paying a high interest rate, and after a few phone calls to different places, I wasn’t feeling much better about the process since it seems everywhere I turned I was either getting denied or not at all comfortable with how things were going.

Working with B of A for a HARP refi was a nightmare. The process seemed to drag on and on. The continued request to re-​submit needed documents was driving me crazy. I did a quick internet search to see if I was alone in my suffering. Luckily, I found a post by Justin that explained other options. 24 days later, B of A was paid off and with a lower interest rate than the bank had offered, my mortgage payment was lowered by $ 600! Back in 2008, we purchased our (first) home utilizing Countrywide for financing (as my wife had a family member that was a broker). However, the mortgage broker provided no warning that we were really choosing a risky path (ARM at 6.125%, Lender Paid Mortgage Insurance, and really not enough down, we should have waited). Jump forward 4 years to the present, only one year away from our first ARM interest adjustment. Interest rates are really good now, but that doesn’t stop the worrying, and I worry a lot.
Having recently become aware of the HARP program (
, making Homes Affordable Refiance Program), I verified that we met all of the listed eligibility requirements. Next, I spoke with my current home loan servicer, Bank of America. After spending 15 minutes to finally speak to one of their mortgage folks, he immediately said that due to the loan using lender paid mortgage insurance and a lesser used MI provided, two things: 1) they would not be able to work with me on the refinance, and 2) I would not be able to refiance anywhere (realllllllllyy…). Not willing to simply give up, I googled a bunch, read a ton, and kept on. I tried 2 other well known online lending institutions. One of which was quicken loans, but their online guy said again, can’t help you, and he suggested I google (sigh). I forget the other one I tried, same response.
Finally, after reading through a forum post of people in my situation, I found several recommendations for a man named Justin Sheftell (courtesy Morgage), and then found this url:
Feeling pretty beaten down and frustrated, I contacted Justin through that page, not thinking that it would lead to anything. Justin responded very promptly, and we were on the phone soon thereafter. I explained the situation, that we seemed to qualify, but that my current loan servicer was not willing to cooperate. We had been current since the inception of the countrywide loan, one of those folks that kept true to financial obligations, but just couldnt’ refinance due to being underwater).

–Put together an upfront good Faith Estimate that was nearly spot on from the get go
–filtered out all of the lenders that wouldn’t be able to help us, and focussed on one that would
–Put a rate lock in place for 45 days.
–From Rate Lock to Close in 28 days (fantastic!)
–Answered all of my questions along the way (first refiance) in a professional and timely manner (and there were a lot of them!)
–Provided online document signing as much as possible.
–Never once gave me an attitude even though it was my first refinace (I wanted upates all the time)
So, the result:
Old: 5-​year ARM (30 year loan) at 6.125%, lender paid mortgage Insurance, $ 2855
new: 30-​year FRM (30 year loan) at 3.875%, buyer paid mortgage Insurance, $ 2394
Monthly Savings: $ 461/​month
Impact: …life changing, so greatful.
