History

Established in 1978.

Comfort Wide Shoes was founded in 1978 as a family business by podiatrist Eugene W. Rogers with his wife Florence and son Gary, with a focus on comfort and customer service. In 2008, the business was sold to Jerry Ewell, a local businessman and pedorthist who has continued the Comfort Wide Shoes tradition of excellence and good old fashioned customer service. Jerry has also expanded selection and introduced state of the art technology such as the Aetrex i-​Step digital foot scanner and the DelCam 3 Dimensional Foot Scanner, allowing accurate foot analysis to give customers the best possible personalized fit. This year, Comfort Wide Shoes welcomed back original founder Gary Rogers, who offers his 30+ years of shoe fitting experience in addition to to the services of owner and Pedorthist Jerry Ewell and the professionally trained Comfort Wide Shoes Staff.

Comfort Wide is THE BEST!
Look, I know this is a small store with only a little bit of space and a few employees, but if you’re looking for a vast array of shoes that are cheap in nature and a slew of associates who don’t care about your needs and who only want to make a commission on your sale, just go to Sports Authority.
Gary was the only associate working when we went into Comfort Wide, yes, but because of this, he was able to listen to my specific shoe wants and he worked tirelessly for nearly 2 hours within the confines of my individual needs to find me the shoes that fit and the shoes that felt best. I wound up with a product I am happy with and it only took about 10 pairs to find it! He personally helped me try each shoe on, let me walk around, made an effort to get to know my husband and I, and made us feel good about what we were looking for, assuring me I wasn’t the worst, most picky customer ever. I am SO happy sales people like Gary still exist! Thank you so much for your wonderful services.

I went there and while there only one sales associate (an older gentlemen) helping someone else. It was about a few minutes waiting until he was done with another customer. I think I got an acknowledgement or greeting. Once he was done he assisted me and answered my question even came out with several sneakers I was looking at to try on. Didn’t buy anything at that time, I was also looking for a size 13 in women’s shoes for a friend. Which he didn’t have at that time, but sometimes they get in that size to their stores. I did need insoles for my UGG boots so they aren’t so flat.
I still need a pair of sneakers and wider for my bunioned feet. LOL And will be there in the New Year.

I just had the most pleasant experience shopping at Comfort Wide shoes. My poor father has been having foot problems and because of his extra wide feet he has a difficult time finding shoes that fit him. When he was limping today because of sore feet I knew it was time to get this problem solved.
I googled «extra wide shoes-​San Diego» and this store came up. I called ahead and spoke to Ralph and he assured me if we drove up from Chula Vista he would do his best to find my Dad some comfortable shoes.
When we arrived Ralph greeted us and asked us a few questions about the issues my Dad was having. First he measured both of my Dads feet and then he had my Dad step on this special machine that analyzed each foot and gave readings on where the pressure points are on each foot. What a great tool to have.
End result, we got a nice pair of proper fitting shoes with custom insoles, some extra wide socks, a nice pair of slippers and my Dad is walking pain free again. Also, all the information on my Dads feet are on file there for our future visits. We are grateful to Ralph and to this shoe store for the help today and we will definitely be returning customers.

I walked in and got completely ignored. The man working didn’t even look up to acknowledge me, or smile or nod or anything. It was like I didn’t exist at all.
Five minutes later, my husband comes in (after finishing up a phone call outside) and he was completely ignored too.
Once in the small store, I could see that the man working was alone & trying to finish up a sale with an older mother/​grandmother and very young daughter but they were bickering (because the little girl didn’t like her shoes). As the guy working walked away from the mother and daughters disagreement I asked him where a specific brand of shoes were located and he seemed aggravated/​disgusted that I was even speaking to him. He rudely showed me where the shoes that I wanted were, and then went back to stand behind the counter/​stare into space/​wait for the family to quit arguing & be ready to get rang up.
Desperate to find some comfortable shoes, I waited politely for his disrespectful, miserable self to become available so I could ask if the shoe I wanted was in stock. When I asked for a womens size 12, he said «Why would I carry that? Not much demand.» And sort of brushed me off.
I was rubbed the wrong way by this entire encounter and it took every fiber of my being to not scream at this guy to tell him how disrespected and upset that he made me feel.
From the moment I walked in, I was treated like shit by an extremely unhelpful, unhappy man… and newsflash dude, if I’m going to drop $ 200 on ugly shoes, the least you can do is have a little bit of customer service skills.
I will never return to this store & I wouldn’t recommend that anyone else wastes their time here.

Lovely service!
The gentleman assisted and in no time we found a pair of shoes that fit. He spotted the problem and fetched a slightly different size and I walked out with a pair of stylish flats that fit perfectly. How often does that happen when one has wide feet/​narrow heel? I tell you, almost never!
Prices are the same as for regular, good quality shoes. Only, these shoes fit.

I am quite impressed with this store. I recently had foot surgery that made my foot pain worse and my foot and toes are still swollen and misshapen after 6 months. My other foot is also misshapen but in a different way. Technically I should wear two different sizes. The salesperson at this store knew the products very well and I ended up finding a black «dress» shoe and a pair of casual shoes (on sales!) that fit and were reasonably comfortable compared to anything else I tried. He also discussed metatarsal pads with me (I ended up buying one to try). He was personable and knowledgeable. I’ll be going back to that store even though it’s ½ hour drive.

i give them two stars because they have good shoes. especially wide shoes. but their service is terrible. They ignore you and make you think that you are a burden to them. But I will still shop here because I cannot find wide shoes. Unfortunately, I hate it every time I shop here.

This place is terrible. Got ignored and then when I was finally waited on, got little a little attention and he began to wait on someone else. Guess my request for extra wide shoes was not very interesting. I asked the salesperson for possible suggestions for my foot and he had none. This place is a nightmare. DO NOT GO HERE.
I left and went to Foot Solutions (GO HERE) in Encinitas, they did a thorough investigation of my feet and then went on to recommend several shoes, encouraging me to try on various brands until I found the best fit for my particular feet. Knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating staff. I know more about my feet after visiting here than I did before.

I went in here with my mother in law and we received the best service! She was looking for an orthopedic shoe that is somewhat dressy for church but had a lot of requests. The salesman actually knew the product that he was selling (unlike certain chain stores that hire random people who have no knowledge about shoes). He was so patient with my mother in law after going through 3 different designs. In the end she ended up buying 3 pairs because she loved the shoes and service! Thanks again!
Overall, if you want a knowledgeable salesman to sell you orthopedic shoes please go here. Don’t waste your time with the other chains!

Went in there looking for some specific insoles for my running shoes, the ones that have certain supports that relieve a Morton’s Neuroma. The gentleman that helped me was super friendly and knew exactly what I was talking about when I tried to explain it in layman’s terms. I will definitely be back!

They were very helpful and very nice. They had me stand on the machine and it showed me where I put most of my weight and told me what kind of arch I have. The machine recommended certain type of insert. I ended up purchasing the inserts. There were a couple of shoes that I liked but they didn’t have my size in either style which was a bummer. Maybe it was just bad luck or maybe they don’t have that much of an inventory. The gentleman that helped me seemed to really know his stuff.

I was so pleased to find this special shoe store today. I needed a shoe that would support and allow my foot to flex while it heals from a serious foot injury. My salesperson, Gary was so helpful and knowledgeable about all their shoes. He made me feel special, took great care of me, and came up with lots of choices for me. I bought a pair of Superfeet insoles that they recommended, and I seriously have no more back pain. Completely solved my standing/​walking back fatigue issues.
I realized a few months ago that my lower back would get so tired and sore from just walking around and standing… and not even for prolonged times. I have never had a back injury, so I did some research and realized it might be because of a lack of support in my feet. I always had slightly flat feet, but not completely, so I always just wore flat shoes thinking that’s what would be more comfortable. Oops.
I went to Comfort Wide Shoes because I lived nearby and saw that it had good reviews already. I knew I needed some assistance and this wasn’t something I could just pick out online, and they definitely were very friendly and helped me out.
They even have a sweet warranty where you can return the insoles if they don’t work out for you– but I didn’t need to. They helped me pick a pair of Superfeet insoles that had just the right amount of arch support, but not too much. After the first day of wearing them, I immediately could feel the added support under my arches.
And now it’s been over 2 months. Seriously, I throw the Superfeet insoles in all the shoes I wear now. To work, to go running, to go working out… it’s freakin awesome. $ 40 does wonders… if you have back pain or something and it’s from your feet support… go to this place to get that sorted out.

I walked (limped) into the store and was met by Gary who right away asked me whether I wanted to just look around or if I had any questions. I really needed to find a shoe that wouldn’t worsen the pain from my heel-​spurs and plantar fasciitis. My mother had recommended that I get a shoe by EasySpirit, and so I was hell-​bent on getting that brand name. He patiently worked with me for what seemed like an hour and finally brought a different brand name. The shoe was PERFECT. What a Great Attitude! Such incredibly thoughtful service. I would highly recommend this store to everyone. Now that’s the way to do business!!! 10 stars wouldn’t be enough.

I spend 8 – 18 hours a day on my feet doing hard labor and I needed some good shoes. I looked this place up on Unilocal,seemed good, and went in to give it a whirl. The man the helped me, Gary, was extremely knowledgable. I told him my needs, my particular foot issues, and then we began testing out different shoes and insoles. He wasn’t interested in selling me the priciest shoe, just the best ones for my needs and foot. I was VERY impressed with his professionality as well. Its a small store, and there were two other customers trying on shoes and he took turns interacting with us all appropriately, which can be very stressful and turn a normal sales clerk into an edgy rude one, but he was very experienced and well mannered. I would know, I’ve been in customer service for 10 years myself, and good service is a choice and I don’t often think many people live up to at least the quality of service I provide. Gary happened to be exceptional.
I ended up buying a pair of shoes and inserts, which I dearly needed, determined the best for ME by a special, electronic machine that you stand on, and measures your weight bearing distribution. After the machine, and trying on the determined insert, I found it to be the best insole I’ve had yet, and therefore very accurate.
Loved it. However, not a place for extremely trendy shoes. These were mostly functional work shoes, geared towards comfort, not glam, which I could particularly careless about after a long day at MY job.

The shop is unique and rare and we are lucky to have it in San Diego. I mean, not everyone can or want to wear stilletos all day, like Sex and the City suggests. Comfort Wide Shoes is not just for your grandmother’s feet, but you may need to pay them a visit if your feet are burning and your back is aching after standing all day at work. For these reasons, I was on the hunt for the perfect shoe or insole that would alleviate some, if not, most of the pain.
I’m so happy to find this store because they have such a wide selection of comfort and wide shoes, like the name of the store. Yes, they have the grandma-​looking shoes, but they also have cool, contemporary walking shoes; cute maryjanes, clogs, and loafers for work. I got a cute pair of mary janes that were on sale for $ 62.50 from $ 125 — that’s half off! The shoes include 3 pairs of inserts and insoles that would have costed, at least $ 50, for a pair.
They are an authorized SAS Shoe seller. Also, there’s a good selection of clearance shoes that are at least 30% off so if you find that the shoes are too expensive, you can check clearance.
I highly recommend this shop to those who work on their feet all day, nurses, people with wide feet, and people who want comfortable shoes.
