Carole’s Bed & Breakfast Inn

My husband and I stayed at Carole’s several times when we went out and returned from a trip to Hawaii. We are from Ohio so we wanted to lay over a few days in San Diego around the trip. Carole and her son Mike were very gracious and friendly. They went out of their way to accommodate our airline schedule. We stayed in the studio and that was the most comfortable bed we slept on the whole trip! Breakfasts were delicious and we would definitely go back again. Extremely good value!

Extremely satisfied! Very friendly people, clean, breakfast was awesome! We had no idea that the location was so close to every place we wanted to go! Even though it was a shared bathroom, it was never an issue. Bedroom came with a great air conditioner, we slept like babies! Thanks Carol and Michael for being great hosts, hope to come again!

When I got laid off from Bank of America, I rolled all of my hard-​earned reward points into a gift card to
. Schoolteacher had received some free passes to San Diego parks, so I figured I’d use my pass to find a place to stay. Thanks to a late cancellation, I booked the ‘Rose Room’, and we arrived at Carole’s Bed and Breakfast one Saturday morning.
The house seemed old, and the whole neighborhood seemed stuck in a time long ago. Well, it turns out the house was built in 1904 for the first mayor of San Diego. I’d imagine the whole neighborhood was built about that time. The house creaks when you walk in it. As I’ve done before with places and things, I secretly wondered what events this house had seen over the hundred-​someodd years of it’s life.
Carole fits the ‘little old lady’ mold to a T. She warmly greeted us and led us to our room in the main house. She explained the rules, when breakfast was and about the doors and locks, and then told us about the area. Let me tell you, Carole most definately knows her sh*t about the area, and San Diego. She knows where everything is, and how you should go about doing it. You should definitely use Carole as an information source if you don’t have your weekend already figured out.
It was my first experience with a bed and breakfast, and to be truthful, it’s a bit weird. I honestly felt like I was staying with my grandmother at her house. The wooden floors creaked as we walked over them, so ‘Grandma’ knows when you came in. We whispered as if we were in somebody else’s home. Which we kinda were. I don’t think we’d have whispered in a Motel 6.
However, all weirdness aside, the room was beautifully decorated with chachkis and trinkets that looked almost as old as the house. I ever so carefully walked around the room doing my best to avoid touching or breaking any of them. There was an old-​school tube TV, but we were so busy about town we didn’t turn the thing on. The bed was high and super soft, at it’s foot, a private door led out onto the porch, and towards the great big salt-​water pool in the back. We also had our own bathroom, fully stocked with all the soaps, shampoos, conditioners, towels and hair dryers you could need.
Breakfasts were from 7 – 10, and they were wonderful. When you sat down, a cup of coffee was handed to you, your place was set and food delivered shortly thereafter. Carole’s son Michael prepared, delivered, cleaned and entertained while you sat at their table. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious, and there was as much food as you could eat. Michael told stories of his travels and chatted while we dined with the other guests. Carole owns six (or seven) properties on the street. So we met several different people sitting at breakfast.
Parking is a bit wonky, I couldn’t open up my passenger side door once I pulled into their narrow parking lane on the side of the house. I had to let Schoolteacher out by the street, and pull in. Since it’s two or three cars deep, you might get parked in. But people are nice and totally willing to move their cars so you can go out for the day.
It’s a great place to stay, and Carole is a great and knowledgable little old lady. I’m glad I stayed here, but it is a bit on the weird side. You’re staying in somebody’s house, and it really does feel like that.

This is a wonderful place to stay if you want to feel like you are staying at grandma’s house. It is very relaxing and homey. Just like everyone said, Carole is one of the nicest people you will meet. Her grandson Michael cooked the breakfast. One morning we had scrambled eggs, fruit and a muffin and the next morning it was Belgium waffles. Yum! We stayed in the Rose room with its own bath and patio area. And we really felt welcomed and comfortable. This craftsman style house is situated in a quiet neighborhood in North Park and within walking distance of wonderful neighborhood restaurants. You are a little over a mile away from Balboa Park. Next time we’ll bring our bikes and spend the day exploring. I highly recommend this place for something off the usually resort or hotel scene.

Honestly the best vacation ive been on! I love Carole she is so cute and so sweet. Her son is very nice, and very good company at breakfast. Very good location and very good neighborhood!

It doesn’t get any better than this. From the moment I stepped into this little Victorian house, I was greeted warmly. I had a robe waiting (nice touch) to the warm salt water pool in the back. ahh…to the public transportation a block away (which is awesome if you are working downtown — saves on wear and tear on your car/​body).
Carole is amazing — she is not intrusive, yet is there when I need her. The house is quiet and private and safe. Love it here! I will never stay anywhere else, and Michael’s breakfasts are delicious!

Gracious hosts … quiet and lots of privacy … impeccable, well maintained, and charming. Comfortable bed. We were happy there. Staying four nights in the lovely cottage called «Casita» gave us a living room, kitchen, and bedroom — a short walk from the main house and great breakfasts! Carole and Michael invited our adult daughter, who had just moved to San Diego, to eat breakfast with us whenever she could join us, which was especially wonderful!

I’ve stayed at Carole’s twice now. The people who run this place are the sweetest humans you could care to meet. Its a family business with a long long history and you feel it when you come in the door. Carole in particular is a kind, upbeat and lovely lady who obviously loves what she does. At Carole’s you get a perfect balance of attention and «hands off». You get the sense they are available if you need them and you can have privacy if you want it. The space is warm with a nice dark wooden interior that feels like its always a holiday of some kind. The rooms are simple. They are in fact the rooms that you might find in an old school house like this one. The thing that I love about this place is you feel like you’re part of some extended family when you come here. I know that sounds like something that an overly sentimental person might say. But it’s true. Two other things. The breakfasts are amazing. This last time i was here I was served these killer greenish pesto eggs, a fruit plate and a muffin. They remembered that I like the licorice tea so they brought some from the back. Finally the neighborhood the house is in is my favorite in San Diego or close. Its basically Golden hill which is a beautiful and homey non-​pretentious part of the city. Check out carole’s sweaters too! This and the big kitchen restaurant are my San Diego Mainstays and are the best of the local «golden hill’ area has to offer.

Carole’s bed and breakfast in the North Park section of San Diego has all the ingredients a traveller seeks– hospitality, location, comfort, and easy on the pocket book. You cannot beat it.

My daughter lives 5 blocks from here, so when I visit I stay at Caroles. I have stayed here twice and enjoyed my stay each time. Its way better than a cookie cutter hotel and kind of like visiting Grandma’s house. There is some deferred maintenance in the room I stayed in but overall a good experience. Carole is very charming and very easy to chat with, she was a model in the 1950’s. I will stay at Caroles on my next visit to SD.

Clean, quiet and attentive proprietress. Love the Northpark area too, awesome place for a stroll or a little walk and your near sum hoppin clubs too. What more could a person want?

I booked the place for my parent’s and thought it was a good place for them to relax. Boy, was I wrong. First, they were staying there on Wed. night to return back to the Inn on Fri. night and when they returned (keep in mind, they did not stay at the Inn on Thurs.) the room was left as they left it. I mean, no one bothered to clean-​up the room; no clean sheets or towels, an unmade bed, and the trash can was not emptied. My parents were so exhausted that they did not complain. However, on Sun. no one had come to clean up their room… at all (that’s 3 days) I informed Carole and she finally had it cleaned up. Yet, my question is, does the guest have to bring it to the attention of the Innkeeper to clean up the place?
Then, the fire alarm kept buzzing through the day & night, the ceiling fan (when turned on), looked like it was going to come off the ceiling, and then there was the unpleasant ant problem that got into my parent’s suitcase and bed. Needless to say, they will not be staying there ever again and we don’t recommend it. For the price, take your business elsewhere, where you will get adequate housekeeping, clean sheets and towels, and of course a place where ants do not find themselves in your belongings or better yet, on you.
Sad to say, they never inquired as to the needs of my parents. Overall, bad business!
