History

Established in 1990.

California Cycleworks as a motorcycle-​related business has been in operation since at least 1990. Two people before the current ownership ran the company as a full service independent repair shop, operating under d. b.a. Chris Kelley, the present owner of the business, worked at Ca Cycleworks as a mechanic from 1994 to 1997 and then took over operation of the company.

Chris started getting e-​mails from the information page about his 1992 Ducati 900 Supersport & people were asking about how and where to parts for Ducatis. Then the magic words sunk in: Can I just buy from you & have you ship parts to me?

Near 2003, Chris organized California Cycleworks into an LLC and operated partially from home and industrial warehouse space. At the end of 2004, sales volume grew to the point where a traditional retail store front was required and Cycleworks moved to 6338 Riverdale Street in San Diego. In 2005, the business reorganized into a California S Corporation.

Business Owner

Chris draws from 20 years of motorcycling experience for helping customers and making product recommendations. He has over 200,000 miles ridden, 3 years roadracing with WSMC (finished up with a class championship), 10 years working on and riding Ducatis, and also ownership of many other brands of motorcycles.

Chris believes in the golden rule — treating people «right», a result of his earlier years in the military. Before running Cycleworks full time, he graduated from SDSU with an engineering degree and worked 2 years as a software engineer.

I have only ever visited the webstore and youtube videos. Great how to videos. Good prices and everything you’ll need to keep your Ducati up and running. Their exact fit timing belts are awesome.
They are always willing to help out and answer a technical question if you get stuck but the video on youtube will get you through most rough spots.

Make this your first stop fo Ducati parts, in person or mail order! Although my Ducati is on the east coast of the US, California Cycleworks has supplied me with many parts and even more critical information. When I needed a OEM part they did not have they referred me to Seattle Ducati who provided a great alternative factory part that my local dealer did not know about.
Chris is all about service to the customer. First rate.

A few days ago I called CA-​Cycleworks to order a rather expensive performance part for my Ducati. I wanted to speak with Chris, the owner, to ask a few questions prior to taking the dive.
Long story short, he asked me several very good questions about my riding style and aspirations for my machine, then proceeded to convince me to re-​think my decision, save my cash and in the future just trade up for an upgraded Monster if I really wanted to be stoked. He spent a long time chatting with me, sharing his knowledge of the machines, recommending various DIY mods, just being an overall awesome dude.
The guy has an impeccable reputation in the industry for a reason, but something like this just goes so far above and beyond its simply unheard of. Then today when I had a question about performance coils and a jet kit he sells I received a detailed response within hours.
Big time thumbs up. Dude should get an infinite supply of stars. If he has what I need I’ll never again buy elsewhere.

Been a reviewer on Unilocal and a customers of Chris and didn’t put it together until now. This is a great outfit. I think its a an enthusiasts dream, Chris is doing what he loves and for the customer/​enthuisast to able to benefit from this attitude/​approach. I was studying his videos before I even before I got my bike. He freely gives this info on the net. He is helpful in-​person additionally, or over the phone.

Five stars is an understatement for Chris and California Cycleworks. I have been dealing with him for something like eight or ten years, not sure on that. I have NEVER had the slightest glimmer of a problem with him and he is always incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.
I would be stunned if he gets anything but a prefect set of all Five Stars. Would that everyone was as good and ethical in their business practices.
FYI, Chris is a VERY skilled and hands on mechanic that knows, in my case, Ducatis very well. So you are not just dealing with a great retailer, but someone who knows the parts he sells.
Early on, I was talking to Chris about something I was doing on my Ducati. I live in Palm Springs, not San Diego and he mentioned he had made a special tool to help on the job. At this point, we had never met and he really didn’t know me. He then UPS’ed the tool to me on loan. Now the UPS cost to him was an out of pocket cost. That’s the kind of guy he is.

So i called all around San Diego to find the battery for my bike. only place that has it tells me «that’s $ 75.00 plus tax». (man I am thinking, that is super expensive for a battery) I find this place «California Cycleworks», and call and ask «do you have a batter that fits my bike?» «No we only carry Ducati stuff… Actually you could bring in the battery, and we can see if we got something that will fit.»… When I bring it in Chris (the owner) takes a look at the battery and says «this is why it’s not charging, lemme fill it with some water, charge it overnight for you, and load test it in the am. then i fire you a call, and hopefully that will fix your problems.» This guy saved me 75 bones. All i have to say is, Thank you Chris, you are customer service!!! BOOM!!! Print it!!!

Yeah! Finally I get to review something first! Ok, note to self: breath slowly. Enter the shop:
Me:I’m so glad I found this place! I thought it was up in SF or some shit!
Chris: Cool.
Me: Ok, um, wow, there’s some awesome stuff in here… are those CRG brake levers?!
Chris: Yep.
Me: Wow.
Chris: Yeah. It’s nice stuff.
Me: How much are they, out of interest? I need a new front brake lever and I’ll replace the clutch lever to match when I eventually buy one.
Chris: $ 150. each.
Me: So anyway, I need some timing belts for my bike haha.
Chris: What bike do you have?
Me: It’s an ’02 monster 750i.e. Dark.
Chris: (hands me the belts) here you go.
Me: That was easy, how much are they?
Chris: $ 40 each
Me: I’ll take em (that’s 20 bucks less per belt than other places and they’re the SAME belts, I think to myself).
Then he proceeded to give me some tips about replacing the belts and we talked about bullshit for about an hour. Awesome! :) He showed me his 2 race bikes and a bunch of other stuff. This is how a bike shop should be run. I’ve been back there 3 times in the last week for parts and I’ll continue going.
The shop is located in a suite just off the road so you have to look for the posted sign, you might miss it the first time but the road is only about 200 feet long so it doesn’t take long to turn around and realize you missed it.
Chris stocks lots of parts. If he doesn’t have it, he can get it. If he can’t get it, he can tell you where to get it, at the best price. He is beyond knowledgeable and is happy to spend time talking to you about mechanical and other stuff while taking time away from his actual ‘work’ schedule. I got my timing belts here way cheaper than they would have been through a dealer and a bunch of other stuff too. From light weight fly wheels to exhaust systems to spark plugs and tools it’s here. They’re super nice and have knocked the price down on everything I’ve bought.
It’s a little diamond in the rough, if you’re a bike enthusiast, especially italian bikes, you’ll enjoy visiting this place. It’s worth knowing that CA Cycleworks exists and where it is. Look for Chris’s videos on youtube.

Chris is a very nice guy, super helpful and involved in the community. He’s not local for me so I’ve never visited the shop, but I’m sure it is a great place to buy parts from in person as well as online.
