History

Established in 2000.

Martin Beck joined the electrical apprenticeship school in

1978 in Berlin– Germany when he was 17 years old.

He graduated as Journeyman Electrician in 1982 and continued to improve his skills and knowledge at a wide variety of levels and challenges the electrical industry has to offer.

After moving to the USA in 1989 he joined the electrical union in Seattle and worked on various commercial and residential projects and in the customer service department.

In the beginning of the year 2000 he relocated to San Diego where he found a great demand for educated and reliable electricians.

All of his experiences and the opportunities of performing electrical work in Europe and in the United States, working at the highest level of professionalism and working with the best electricians of the industry, has been the foundation of making Beck Electric & Data Services to an established and trusted contracting firm today.

I called Beck Electric for a few electrical issues and they were all resolved today. Martin Beck diagnosed and replaced a failed GFCI outlet in my garage, and also picked up and replaced a kitchen under cabinet light.
He called 10 mins out (per my request), and worked quickly, efficiently, and with expertise.
Along with the good rating here on Unilocal,what also informed my decision to go with Beck Electric was Martin’s sincere responses to various reviews, both good and bad. Martin’s a solid guy, straight shooter, friendly, and a total pro.
Highest recommendation, will definitely call him again if/​when I need further electrical work done.

I am editing my review of this business. I am going from 1 star to 2 stars and going to condense my feedback.
1) communication confusion over what their technicians said versus what my tenants said. my tenants told me they never told Beck Technician, John he had to leave the first visit but owner, Martin told me that his technician told him they did… this is important because the time, travel, and visits are all part of what you are charged for. the 2nd visit was unconfirmed and cause confusion amongst everyone with a «dropby» and we were going to be charged 2nd travel fees prior to me calling to share my concern over being charged for a visit that wasn’t confirmed. Troubleshooting should be 1 visit.
2) In the end, after two visits and two long phone conversations with the owner, the job was completed, so we are pleased it was finally fixed, however the technician, Kevin, called us 20 minutes before the scheduled appt at 8am that he’d be there at 9am, but showed up at 10am. we understand some traffic, but we didn’t get updates on it; and my tenants had to reschedule their plans due to the inconvenience. My tenant is a Marine officer and had made special arrangements to be there to ensure no more miscommunication occurred.
3) Pricing it not unreasonable, but it was a headache getting quotes, and agreeing to proposed solutions. When I asked for a quote; the owner said he would get it to me right away, which wasn’t right away. I am not unreasonable, but give me a realistic timeframe and I’ll wait. The owner left me voice messages and spoke to me several times explaining his personal life and personal circumstances which I found to be very unprofessional. As a customer it made me feel uncomfortable. We all have jobs, families, pets, etc. but I just don’t need to know all these details; i just need to know what to expect in terms of time, price, and services. I felt as though I was being bullied and guilt tripped the entire time working together. I actually wish I had read some of the previous reviews which mimic what I am saying; but my husband chose them due to cheaper initial fees.
All in all, if you have a simple job it is possible to get a decent service, but anything unique; I would probably pay for another company that might be more expensive but far less headache.

Beck electric did wonderful work. Jose is a rockstar and does excellent work when it comes to panel upgrade, rewiring, and grounding. My parents also liked his professionalism and demeanor… Jose is very personable and I am thankful for the work he completed. Kevin and Martin definitely helped make the estimate reasonable. Despite some miscommunication, lack of timely communication and clarity/​direction, my overall experience with Beck was good. I will definitely recommend Jose to do any electrical work you have in your home.

I was looking for a contractor to convert my old kitchen fluorescent tube light to recessed light and found Beck’s through some Unilocal research. When I called the company they directed me to Kevin.
For the most part I exchanged texts and photos with Kevin to show him the kitchen at its current state and what I wanted it to look like. Shortly after I received a quote and scheduled the appointment.
The day of Kevin showed up around 9am and began the prep work of laying down tarp to catch the debris and dirt around the kitchen area. By noon the work is complete.
Overall the whole process was laid back and stressed-​free, and I think in larger part it’s attributed to Kevin’s expertise in electrical work as well as dealing with clients over the years. I would not hesitate to work with Kevin again in the future.

Shorted out a circuit and couldn’t correct it at the breaker panel, and also needed a flickering garage light fixed. Kevin was great at communication, calling me to let me know his ETA, and then again when he was delayed by rush hour traffic. He was able to fix both problems quickly and even offered to clean up when some dust and dried paint came off of the outlet he had to open up. He also pointed out that one of fluorescent bulbs was close to burning out and would need to be replaced soon. He lived up to the excellent Unilocal that made me choose Beck, and I will plan on using them for any and all future electrical issues in my house. Thanks!

This review is long overdue.
When I moved into my home several years ago I had Beck replace the panel and do a few other odd electrical jobs around the house. The job was well done and reasonably priced.
A year later, after getting central AC installed by another group, we were having trouble dealing with some of the city inspectors for the electrical portion of the AC work (which was done by someone else). I had called Martin Beck just to see if he had any advice, and he went above and beyond, contacting and meeting with the inspectors multiple times on my behalf until the situation was eventually resolved. He had no obligation to do so, but he handled the situation for us. I am extremely grateful for his help.
I’ll be using Beck for any future electrical work I have in San Diego without hesitation.

Beck Electric was the only company that I called out of 4 or 5 that was wiling to come and look at my intercom system. Turns out that they were able to find an easy fix. Martin the owner was very responsive and knowledgable, and John did a great job at my home. As a bonus, Martin called several weeks later to follow up on service and make sure all was ok. I will definitely use them again.

Very satisfied!
I hired Beck Electric to remove and replace some of the old knob and tube wiring I had in my house. I have an old 100 year old craftsman house. It is a difficult and delicate job because my walls are fragile (plaster) and the job requires to work in tight spaces (the attic and crawl space). Despite that, John, Miguel and Kevin worked liked it was their house: They protected everything and kept the house clean, and only did the least possible amount of damage to the house.

My friend Dace referred me to Beck Electric for a ceiling fan I needed to have installed. Martin took the order and scheduled Kevin to come out to see me between 10 and 11. Kevin called me prior to arriving and was early. After I gave him the history of the fan he checked the mounting and the wiring (the other fan I bought didn’t work) and said the current set up wouldn’t support the new fan I purchased (plastic mount supported only a light). He changed out the mount and put my new fan up and the light works! (previous fan light didn’t work). Keven is professional and tidy and likes cats (3 pluses for me!) Price was reasonable for the work done. I have Beck Electrical in my file for any other projects in the future. Thank you Kevin!

So I am back to review and characterize the follow-​up consultation and the work we proceeded with while selecting and working with Beck Electric. Firstly, I will say that Martin, and Miguel who did the work, did the best they could sincerely following up to the missed meeting in the beginning. Following a bit of back and forth with our Proposal [I’m an engineer so I can’t help myself], we went ahead and scheduled the work. Also, I will say that I am very happy with the level of ‘effort and time commitment’ Beck Electric gave us on our Project as this is usually what Contractors always fall short on, especially if it’s a smaller/​medium sized residential job. That’s all most home owners want; a professional opinion, a touch of brainstorming based of their professional experience, and a reasonable and understandable cost estimate that allows us to make an educated decision. Beck Electric provided all of these services so we were back on track and things were looking good! The work itself, outside of a minor LED lens difference that Martin promptly corrected and handled, was performed by Miguel who was extremely professional, helpful, genuine, and knowledgeable. I would say it is generally rare to have someone doing the actual work have all of these qualities so well done to Miguel and well done to Martin for seeing this value in him as well. All in all, we are happy with the work, which was garage lighting and switch/​outlet, several GFI installations, and eleven (11) recessed LED lights on our kitchen, hallway, and bathroom areas. I would and will definitely look to Beck Electric again when we are ready for more upgrades!

I want to thank Beck electrical for the professional work that was completed at my home. Miguel insured that we knew what was happening at every step and allowed for us to make the final decisions on placement while offering multiple options. I called Beck Electric for a problem with flickering lights throughout my downstairs area. Both times John came to my place — the first time to diagnose and the 2nd time to perform the work after purchasing the needed supplies — he was very prompt and courteous. He is highly knowledgeable and was able to find the root of the problem quickly.
I really appreciate that he wanted me to see for myself what he found — for example, the burn marks on the breakers where electricity had been arcing. That made me even more confident that he was honest and not trying to sell me something I didn’t need. He gave me several options and helped me decide what would work best for my home. Both he and Martin, the owner, showed as much urgency and concern about my problem as if it were their own home. John completed the work quickly and efficiently. No more flickering lights — yay! Thanks, Beck Electric, for a job very well done.

Although annoyed at his unprofessional demeanor, I was eager for his estimate back and availability to start the job. Called, emailed, texted… he never responded nor returned any of my calls.

I had a wonderful experience with Beck Electric! Martin was knowledgeable, very responsive and his crew was very professional and left my home (including the newly finished hardwood floors) in perfect shape. My house looks amazing with the recessed lighting in my living room and dining room — I even got to paint a deep shade of red (which I’ve always wanted) in the dining area with the new lights! I called Beck Electric a couple of months ago based on Unilocal reviews. Martin, the owner, came out to look at our jobs. We wanted a ceiling fan installed in the guest bedroom and a security light installed in the back yard. Martin is a very personable guy, from Germany, that has been doing electrical work for years, and he definitely knows his trade. He made some recommendations that saved us money in the long run. The quote was very reasonable. One of his long time electricians, John, came out **on time** the day scheduled for the work. John went to work and did a great job on both projects. I watched him work and he is definitely professional. I didn’t have to worry if the quality would be good — there was no question. I highly recommend Martin, and Beck Electric, without hesitation. You will get your money’s worth, and a quality product.

These electricians gave me a headache actually. I told Martin the issue which was lthat the lights in my apartment would turn off and back on. I had actually called another electrician who told me that it was a really easy breaker issue. So i was hesitant went he sent SERGIO who started fixing up all the lights one by one. He never found the problem, but he did get his $$ for being there for 4 hours (45 minutes of him driving from wherever his office is and another hour of him going to home depot to buy new light fixtures?) Right after he left, the lights went out again so I called Martin and martin told me he would send sergio back– no charge.
Sergio looks behind all the outlets and finds nothing, tells me he tightened everything up, which takes 2 – 3 hours. I refuse to pay as I know he didn’t find the issue. Martin gets me on the phone and tells me I have to pay. So now they’re bullying me into paying for spending time fooling around at my apartment and telling me I don’t know anything about electrician business even though I know he didn’t find the root cause. I just wanted to go to another electrician at that point. I paid anyways and now that i’m $ 600 out of money (for looking behind my outlets and adjustin light bulbs-​mind you), the lights go out again!
repeat: i just spent 8 hours and $ 600 to have sergio fool around my oulets that were never broken and reinstalling lightbulbs. bullied me into paying, and my lights (same problem) have the SAME ISSUE. nothing was fixed. my lights are a little brighter (yay) (sarcasm). nobody has the time or money for this kind of service.
I call martin, he sends his «best guy» on monday as he tells me (i think miguel) who is awesome and finds the breaker problem immediately. I don’t think i got to thank you– so thanks a lot, miguel!
so now i’m down $ 600 because of an incompetent electrician. If you must go with this company– ask for miguel (who was at my apartment for a total of 30 minutes and who was extremely nice to me). if you’re getting sergio– you’re just gonna get bullied out of $ 600 dollars.
if you asked me why i paid: imagine 2 electricians lecturing you for 2 hours when you know you were right. sergio lectured me in person and martin lectured me over the phone (he just took sergio’s word for whatever he had done!) I just wanted them to leave.
