A beautiful sign for one of the coolest and most cultured neighborhoods in all of San Diego. This sign is more than twisted metal and wire, it’s an indicator of how much progress this neighborhood has made over the years and a symbol of many more great things to come. Do yourself a favor… head down to Barrio Logan, wait in line at Las Cuatro Milpas, eat some of the best Mexican food ever, turn the corner, admire the sign and finally sip a cup of delicious coffee from Ryan Bros. Sounds like a perfect afternoon in the Barrio if you ask me!

They had upgrade this town area, but the homeless, drunks, and gangs are still high crime rate area. Even the grocery store, Northgate Market, has security at entrance and are aware about this high crime rates. This area is not good for kids.

Beautiful Gateway sign! I was driving in the area today and finally got a look at the new Barrio Logan sign located at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Parkway and Main Street. So awesome! According to the Union/Tribune, the Barrio Logan Gateway sign is «eighty feet long and 42 feet tall at its center. There are Mayan, Aztec and Kumeyaay motifs. There’s a fish, a nod to the historical importance of the sea as a food source, and an ear of corn, a staple crop for Native Americans.» Additionally, «two pyramid shapes on the sign overlap, „representing the meeting of cultures,“ said Armando Nuñez, a longtime Barrio Logan resident and artist who helped design the sign.» My friend Tanya from the Port District invited me to the Grand Opening ceremony to dedicate the sign in mid December, which was originally rain-delayed but I was out of town then. So I am very happy I got a chance to check it out. In fact, it was the San Diego Port District that coughed up the money for the sign. The Port used state and federal grants to pay the estimated price of between $ 750,000 and $ 900,000 for the Gateway project. The Barrio Logan area is getting spruced up as part of a $ 1.7 million traffic-improvement project that includes upgrades to crosswalks, vehicle lanes and landscaping. I love the new Gateway Sign, which totally captures the rich cultural heritage of Barrio Logan. At the Dec. 2014 dedication, there was reportedly a sage burning from a group of Aztec dancers and a blessing from Father Richard Brown, the senior priest at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He had some holy water to sprinkle on the sign. 5 UnilocalSTARS for this most wonderful new piece of local flavor!
