Afrocentric Barbers

I never go to barber shops for the reason of barbers not feeling welcoming. I came in and got exactly that. I walked around for a good minute and never got greeted nor acknowledged. I had my hair cut and it was not a fade I would expect from barbers. At check out she tells me to go to the liquor store to take out cash instead of my debit card. I am charged to withdraw money there, it was just not a good experience

I just got a haircut today by the gentleman who was closest to their lounge area. I didn’t catch his name but was pretty tall and skinny. He was very cool, made interesting conversation and the haircut I would rate at a ⁷⁄₁₀. Very disappointed by the price though. I know it’s not his fault but I bet that the location has to do a lot for the price being that much. By far the most expensive cut I have ever paid for. But of course I gave him a tip for the job he did. I probably won’t be coming back and it is a shame because of so close to where I reside. Besides that, the cut was decent and will recommend as a last minute location.

!!! I WARN YOU!!! This woman chopped off my beautiful hair that was a lovely afro (Angela Davis style). I am an au naturale woman… As in kinky hair. She gave me an edge up, like a man. I cried out and asked her, «why did she cut my hair like I a was dyke?» My hair was cut uneven, and when I asked her «what texture of hair does she think I have???“she, said I had trick or treat hair, because I had so many different textures. „She later persisted to dye my hair, because she wanted to make the „butch“ hair cut more feminine. Not only did she dye my hair blonde… when I asked to be a warm chestnut brown hair color, she recolored my hair to correct the mistake. Needless to say I was a leopard at this point. Then, when other barber’s sat idly by and watched as she butchered my hair. Another hair beautician inside of the store asked me,“ if I had read a Unilocal review about her other atrocious hair catastropes?» When the beautician asked me this question, CHENTELL yelled, «I F*CKING do this for a living.» I looked at her crying and said, «why are you so mad and yelling… I am the one that looks like a butch leopard?» Not to mention, I had an interview in 4 days. She ended dying my hair for a 3^rd time. Back to the closest color to black… I still had spots of orange patches in my hair, where she neglected to color my hair. She had the nerve to say she wouldn’t charge me for the haircut, but she CHARGED me for the dye job. I ended up calling the owner of the barbershop the next day threatening to sue. I also texted Chentell and said I would take legal action… HERE’S THE KiCKER though … the Chentell that butchered my hair was not even the woman i was supposed to visit. The correct Chantelle that should have done my hair had relocated to a different shop. So I was texting her and threatening to sue if my hair was not corrected. .and the ORIGINAL Chantalle that should have serviced me, offered me a free color and service to possibly conjure up a decent hairstyle. Oh, and the owner was there the whole time!!! I thought he was a regular barber until I had to go back to his shop to get my hair cut even. He cried and asked me not to sue him. He gave me a full refund from my last visit.
THIS SHOP SHOULD GO DOWN IN THE DUMPS.
If you go to any barber in the shop, go to SLIM! When I say barber mastery!!! He is great… and educated in his craft.

I’ve been going to this shop since it was down on Broadway WAY back in the day. Every barber in there is great, but my man is Mr. Lamar, the owner. Comfortable, friendly environment. They give you exactly the look you want and do a great job of it, at very fair prices. Street parking can be a little challenging at times, but it’s worth it.

Information needs updated. My son and I woke up early before a trip to Anahiem to grab a cut. Site says shop opens at 7am. We went around 8am shop was closed. PLEASE update the hours. Very disappointed.

We were looking for a new barbershop home for our (11 year old) nephew’s afro care and found Derrick to be available. While he was the only stylist on duty, we waited patiently, watching how precise he was with the two customers ahead of us. We knew he would give us the same attention. Some shops drag their feet between clients, but Derrick was just ready to go when it was our turn. «D» showed Derrick the style he wanted from one of the several posters, and together they made a plan. I was asked about the length at one point and suggested he and D decide together. It was clean, precise and perfect on all sides. We expect to make this our regular spot from now on.

I gonna start this barber shop at 5 stars because I just walked in and got service within the first minute there. I just got a beard shape up this time; maybe next time I will get the works. I wanna thank Chanelle for hooking me up she did a good job and sorry if I am spelling your name right. Guys don’t discriminate on women sometimes they do a better job than the men… just saying.

Great shop … slim always hooks me up with a fresh razor fade … well worth the money and drive if you don’t live close like me

PHENOMENAL.
I have one of those Skrillex undercut hairstyles — you know, the shaved side of the head shenanigans. It’s also asymmetrical… but everything was self-​done by me in the mirror so it was a bit of a mess.
For awhile I had been wanting to find someone who could shave a cool design in my head, and a quick Unilocal search brought me to Afrocentric, the only place where I actually saw customer photos like what I wanted. I finally decided to take the plunge in early June on my birthday. I called around 4pm, and was told that Chenntel would be able to take me at 4:30.
I walked in and got a few quizzical looks as the only white person in the place, but Chenntel recognized me and waived me over to sit at her station. She asked me if I just wanted a design shaved into the side of my head, and I said «well, actually I really don’t like how my hair is cut in the back here… I wanted it to look more dramatic but it all got kind of flat and boring. If you could make it more dramatic that would be awesome. But I am growing it out so please don’t cut too much.»
And Chenntel like the mind-​reader she is went to work. She spent a loooong time fixing my hair [I pledge never to cut my hair at home again… because every time I do when I eventually go to the salon I get a lecture and someone has to fix all the hacking off that I did] and added tons of layers but left the length that I wanted. She also shaved a cool stripe design into my head as requested!
Afterwards she decided to wash my hair to make sure it was cut how she wanted, and she gave me a deep conditioning treatment. Then she said she wanted to put in some volume, so I got the whole rollers & sitting under the heat helmet shebang, and then she curled my hair into this ultra sassy style. Somewhere in the mix I mentioned that I was supposed to drive up to Huntington Beach because some good friends were throwing me a birthday party, and she was so helpful. She gave me the best rockstar treatment possible while being as quick as she could to get me out and on my way to my party!
I mentioned everything to her and how appreciative I was and she said that she tries to make everyone who sits in her chair feel special. She definitely succeeds at that and I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants a movie star treatment at normal prices. You know I’m kind of a cheap-​ass if I’m cutting my hair at home, but coming to Afrocentric is definitely worth it and will be my new regular spot.
ALSO: No personal experience with any other barbers but holy smokes every client I saw walk out of the shop looked SO fresh. Everyone’s lines were even, edges were clean, and fades were crispy.

Been on the road for awhile. I’ve had good cuts and bad cuts. Always nervous when I’m in a new place, because you just don’t know what you’re gonna get sometimes when you search for «black barbershop» on Unilocal.But this place is a good one. Derrick was my barber, and he took my requirements (medium fade, no scalp showing, no razor lining) and made it look better than any other place I’ve been in the last year and a half, including L.A., SF, Denver, NYC, and others. Out in 30 minutes. Call first to make sure it’s not busy. I went on a Thursday morning and caught the end of a cut, so I didn’t have to wait much. Good spot.

I came into the shop on a hunch and because I was taking care of business in SD. I came in when they opened and was greeted and immediately serviced. I got a cut by Derrick and he delivered on his first attempt. Awesome haircut and good humor make a great shop and this shop is definitely a stop if you’re ever in the area.

Brandon has been cutting my hair just about every week for about 10 years and he’s never disappointed. He’s been cutting my son’s hair for about 7 years. After we leave the shop, people swear the barber used a stencil on my son’s hair line. The owner, Lamar, runs a very professional shop with a great atmosphere, hip hop in the background and sports on the numerous TVs. Cost: $ 20 for adults, $ 15 for kids, bring cash. I recommend making an appointment, but walk ins are accepted. Always tip your barber. Good lookin out B!

I give this place 5 stars. It’s been years upon years since I’ve went to an actual barber and I came into this shop with a ragged mop and left with the perfect cut. Lamar is good with the clippers. I’ll be coming back for all my cuts while I live in Diego.

I’m new to the area and was recommend this shop to carry my 7 year old son for his haircuts. When I arrive there I was greeted by the owner of shop Lamar. I found that the all the barbers are friendly barbers. Normally my son is very nervous around new people. But the one barber I decided to go with Brandon made my son very comfortable. Through the haircut asking him question on how he like school and what do he like to do. My son open up and enjoyed the experience.
After it was done my little man look very handsome with his new haircut. I would recommend this place to anyone and I know my son would to. Thank you Brandon.

I go here to get my hair cut to a 1, a lineup and my facial hair cleaned up, and the most I’ve ever paid was $ 20…that is considered a STEAL. I usually get it cut by the same guy (I’m not sure of his name, but he’s younger, from the south and funny as hell) and he’s probably given me the best consistent cuts In San Diego. If you go during the weekday in the morning, there’s usually never a wait.

Was in need of a good haircut after a long deployment, came in and Derrick took really good care of me. He was funny and really took his time with my hair.

Thanks guys for the fix-​it-​ticket. Went to Super cuts for a fade (shouldn’t have…). The lady there cut my hair like she really didnt want to do it!!! Super Cuts was a bad idea from conception. Came here and got it corrected!!! In and out. Thanks guys…

Found this place using Unilocal when i was in dire need of a hair cut in San Diego. It’s pretty hard finding a barber shop that can cater to black hair. Super Cuts is never an option. Walked in and got a great haircut and shave for a good price.

Great place. Chentell is very friendly and very nice. I will definitely go there again.

I like this place. I usually cut my own hair (that’s what guys with short hair do), but every once in a while you wanna go and get it done right. Its funny cuz I would tell my friends I’m looking for a «black barber shop» and they would always ask me «why does it have to be black?» I’ve just always wanted to check one out.
I’ve been there three time. Prices are reasonable. They’ve been in business for a long time. I like that the owner is right there cutting hair with the rest of them. Most of the time its empty. They do take appointments and walk-​ins. Hip hop music playing with a movie on. I most recently went to get my beard trimmed and shaped, and it looked freakin’ good! Barbers are real cool and friendly.
I recommend this place.
