History

Established in 2000.

Acqua Al 2, pronounced (‘ah-qwa-all-doo-eh’), first opened its doors in Florence, Italy in 1978. In 2000, traveler-turned-chef, Martin Gonzalez, was inspired by the restaurant’s Tuscan charm, and after extensive training in traditional Italian cooking by Acqua Al 2’s Executive Chef Stefano Innocenti, Gonzalez opened Acqua Al 2 in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Today, guests enjoy the same dishes served at the famed Acqua Al 2 in Florence.

Acqua Al 2 has received numerous awards, including «Best New Restaurant» in 2001 and «Favorite Italian Restaurant» by San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter Association from 2003 – 2007; 944 magazine’s Platinum Awards for «Best Italian Food» and «Best Downtown Restaurant» in 2006 and «Best Italian Dining» in 2007.

Meet the Business Owner

Martin G.

Business Owner

Executive chef and owner, Martin Gonzalez, began his culinary career while traveling through Europe in his early twenties. After falling in love with Florence, Italy, he enrolled in the Instituto Culinario and studied under Executive Chef Stefano Innocenti, the owner of the original Acqua Al 2. Martin mastered the secrets of the world-famous kitchen and was so inspired with the Italian hospitality at Acqua Al 2 that he wanted to share the same experience with Americans back at home, so in 2000 Martin and Stefano opened Acqua Al 2 in San Diego.

When Martin isn’t at the restaurant, he can be found catering post-game meals for the San Diego Padres baseball team, whose players are huge fans of Acqua Al 2. He can also be spotted singing at the Westgate Hotel or spending time with his family.
