Old world physician meets latest research. Dr. Kingsbury takes his time with patients, explains clearly the cause of symptoms, and outlines treatment that makes sense. He is not quick to «throw medication» at the problem but instead suggests non-​medicinal approaches when appropriate. Dr. Kingsbury’s calm and attentive demeanor is, in and of itself, «part of the treatment» when I am stressed out about some medical condition. He has helped me through several «everyday» medical conditions, as well as larger, more life-​long issues.

Dr. Kingsbury may act like he’s your best friend in his office, but don’t let him be in charge of you in the hospital. When he put my father in the hospital to diagnose back pain, Dr. Kingsbury gave him antipsychotic drugs not only without my consent as power of attorney, but also without any assessment whatsoever. Dr. Kingsbury prescribed a cocktail of antipsychotic drugs and powerful sedatives: Haldol, Risperdal, Ativan, Morphine, and Tylenol with Codeine. (I have records to prove this.) Needless to say, my father suffered a sudden mental decline. When I asked Dr. Kingsbury if my father was on anything to cause this, he told me that my father had «hospital delirium,» and denied any drugs were involved. (He wrote about hospital delirium in the records as well.) I discovered later that Haldol and Risperdal carry a black box warning from the FDA that they can death in older patients.
This started my father on a downhill spiral that he never recovered from. Dr. Kingsbury told me my father should go to a local nursing home for physical therapy for his back and to get over his «hospital delirium.» But Dr. Kingsbury’s discharge orders included Haldol and Risperdal, which were continued at the nursing home, again without any assessment. My father suffered all the severe side effects of these antipsychotic drugs, heart and kidney problems, sudden diabetes, falls, etc. He was dead in less than two months. I didn’t discover the antipsychotic drugs until I obtained the hospital records after my father’s death and learned what really happened. The heartbreaking part of all this is that the reason for my father’s back pain was spinal stenosis, which could have been treated at home with physical therapy and over-​the-​counter medicine.
I would not recommend Dr. Kingsbury to anyone, especially now that he is a «concierge doctor.» This means if you want better care, you have to pay him cash ahead of time. This is in addition to your insurance.
I had a lot of faith in doctors before all this. But because of what Dr. Kingsbury did to my father, I will never completely trust any doctor again. If you insist on going to Dr. Kingsbury, do so at your own risk. However, you should demand copies of all your records, especially while you are in the hospital, so you can verify everything you are told.

Dr. Kingsbury has been my PCP since 2007. He’s a great MD. He will take his time with you to explain your diagnosis and treatment. I was rather disappointed with his office staff recently. I asked my pharmacist to fax a request for renewal of my allergy medication. Per his report, he faxed it 3 times btwn Tuesday and Thursday last week. On Thurs, I called knowing I would be out of town for a week starting that Sunday. I confirmed the pharmacist had the accurate fax number. I was told that Jenna was not in but she would take care of script Friday morning. However, it was not taken care of… and I called and left another message over the weekend knowing I would not likely get my script filled before my Sunday departure. I did not receive a call from Dr. Kingsbury’s office until 4:30 PM on Tuesday, letting me know a renewal was faxed. I got a call from my pharmacy right away that it was filled; of course, that did not help me since I was out of state at that point. I think between multiple faxes from a pharmacist and a call, and 2 phone calls from a patient, this script could have been taken care of faster than 7 days. If it had possibly, I would not be sneezing right now. This kind of lackadaisical follow through is what frustrates patients in my experience.

just an update — last week had a radical prostatectomy to deal with high intermediate stage (Gleason 4+3) prostate cancer that Dr. Kingsbury had wanted me to ignore. Happy to have it dealt with, but sorry that my treatment was delayed by ~1 year due to Dr. Kingsbury’s «confidence».
Maybe just bad luck, and any doctor will be wrong now and again, but 2 missed cancer diagnoses on one patient I think is a concern, especially given his intransigence.

Dr. Kingsbury is my elderly mother’s doctor. I go with her to each of her appointments. Dr. Kingsbury has been a true blessing for us. He is respectful, honest and understanding. He is direct in an easy manner that makes it easy to receive information the patient may not want to hear. He treats the whole patient and does not let his ego get in the way of referring the patient to a specialist when needed. He and his staff have gone out of their way to help my mother and me in her transition to a senior community. He is like a small town doctor but with the savvy, knowledge and resources of a physician in a highly sophisticated medical community.

I have been with Dr. Kingsbury for several years after switching primary care physicians. First of all, his office answers the own phone directly. Sharp in SD has a central reservation system that makes third world call centers seem first class by comparison. His staff are courteous and professional, and Dr. Kingsbury is sharp, personable, and genuinely cares about you. He spends sufficient time to explain things and never makes you feel rushed. I feel fortunate to have a doctor like him.

Been looking for a great Dr for several years. I found him with Dr. Kingsbury. Easy to talk to, good information, and takes his time with you. His staff has always been friendly and helpful too!
