805 Freeway

This freeway sucks. I work at 10am. Traffic. I go home at 4pm. Traffic. Why does this freeway even exist. The only thing I like about this freeway is that it ends up in Mira Mesa & exits easily to North Park!

Brutal mornings and afternoon. Nothing ruins work like sitting in gridlock.
— With major layoffs announced at Qualcomm maybe the traffic will ease up?
— Construction to improve traffic going on summer 2015 up past UTC before sorrento mesa. Very skeptical that this will relive the gridlock.

Traffic in this area sucks! I don’t understand why all of the companies in Sorrento Valley don’t have staggered work times, or do they? Does everyone theoretically start at the same time or do their businesses break up start/​stop times in 30 minute increments? The government does it, don’t businesses?

It was the worst of times and it was the worst of times. That is the 805 from 7 – 11 and 3 – 8 weekdays. They really need to open up the shoulder as a bike lane and I would get to work faster. This freeway is a dog eat dog world. The car in the lane next to you puts their blinker on? That is SoCal speak for I’m already cutting you off, like salmon darting upstream. The sheer frustration of moving 8 miles an hour for an hour could be harnessed from all the commuters to power the new high speed rail.
San Diego needs to man up, float a bond, and build a real regional rail line like cities on the East Coast so people have another way to get to work. It should hit every major neighborhood along the 805 with parking garages. Sorrento Valley cannot handle anymore new commuters!

This freeway is the bane of my existence Monday through Friday. Doesn’t matter if I’m off at 3:30pm or 6:30pm, or anything in between… it sucks.
I work in Sorrento Valley, so pretty much I’m screwed any time I try to find a way home. Qualcomm puts its 20 mega buildings here with their thousands of employees… so what do a ton of businesses do… build there too! Yeah that’s a FAB IDEA GUYS. Convo must have been…

WTF I HATE THE 805 SOUTH AND IF THEY DON’T FINISH MAKING IT LESS OF A HELL HOLE I WILL BURN IT TO THE GROUND. WHEN IS THE NEW LANES GOING TO OPEN…2020!!! BETTER FREAKING HOPE SO!!!

Oh man this freeway is very Bipolar! It can be so smooth and relaxing or it can be total CARmageddon! Don’t even bother driving the 805 if it’s between 3 and 7 pm weekdays because it’s pretty much a parking lot. Especially where it splits from the 5 all the way down to the 8. They’re always doing construction but the traffic never seems to get better. I used to commute on this freeway for 3 years and I am sorry for anyone who has to endure this traffic nightmare. Getting onto this freeway from mira mesa blvd? Omg what a joke! And some people are really rude when they’re in a hurry and there’s traffic. I literally had to find a new way home because I would get so frustrated I was going to snap.
But I don’t want to knock this freeway too hard. It’s good some good points. It connects you to the 5 and it’s pretty cool how its super tall as it goes over mission valley. I like to stare up at it from the dave and buster’s parking lot. But i think im being pretty generous giving it 3 stars!

It’s not your fault, 805.
First there was San Diego.
Then there was Miramar Air Force Base.
Then there was Top Gun *yaaaaaaaah!*
Then they had to build offices and Qualcomm and a bunch of breweries and some suburbs.
But there was no room in San Diego, so they build NORTH of Miramar Air Force Base.
And then there were only THREE FREEWAYS and ZERO SURFACE STREETS that could get you from San Diego to … whatever it is we want to call the North of Miramar.
And the people who slave away in the offices in the North can only afford to live in the city. And the people who garden for the Suburbians in the North need to drive up from south of the border every day.
And I am one of them.
So, it’s not your fault you’re so awful 805. But I still blame you.

This is a okay freeway, except heading north, around 4pm-6pm…lots of traffic. Oh yeah, Watch out for the CHP heading north as you cross the 163. That lady has been sitting at the same spot for about 5 years now. she will catch you!!!

I use to hate the 805 I would always stay in traffic going to work ! But now I love it thanks to the carpool lane !! Seriously I save my self about 15 to 20 min in traffic !! Sometimes there so much traffic on the regular lanes and I pass them with 65 mph !!!

The 805 goes down south leading to Mexico and then up North I think to Del Mar. They are adding new lanes because of all of the traffic. I love the carpool lanes because usually there is so much traffic on this route. But I love it. Not as much as the 163 but it is still an amazing trip. This freeway I think has the highest bridges which can be intimidating if you are afraid of heights. Enjoy the very slow 805 with amazing car tunes or a great time to catch up on a great conversation with your ride along buddy.

I am on the road for work and play a minimum of 600 miles a week. Hence my fondness for Ike’s brainchild, The Interstate system. That being siad, why would one write a review about a freeway? I say, why not?
A large section of this freeway is still under constuction. It is not the most exciting freeway in the western US nor is it the most beautiful. However, it does lead to some pretty cool places such as the International Border, Chula Vista and the Otay Mesa, and National City and Plaza Bonita. I get to drive this stretch of road at least once a week. If you time it just right, traffic is no big deal. Southbound before 9 am you are in good shape. Northbound is a bit of an enigma. Sometimes on some days it is a parking lot and other times it is a ghost town. Nonethelss, the expanded lanes-I’m not sure if they will be HOV or regualr lanes– should decrease the road ragde in coming months (or years, it is a government funded project). Stop off in North Park for a view of gentrification in progress, or take the Adams Ave Exit to dwell in the funk zone known as Normal Heights. If you get bored with 805, you can connect to virtually any other freeway form here. 8, 94, 15, 54, 905 and 5 all meet up with this gigalo of an Interstate.

I hate this freeway. But like a poisonous relationship, I keep coming back. Every day. 805 and I are close… I spend more time with 805 than I do any of my friends, family, or actual boyfriend.
I’m happy that they’re adding new lanes, but angry that they are HOV lanes. Not the proper solution to the problem that is an entire valley of businesses funneling onto two freeways at 5pm. The proper solution (IMO) would be to finish this «Local Bypass» lane, and extend it to actually BYPASS Sorrento Valley, so through traffic can get by. Will that ever happen? Probably not.
It’s 2013… where’s my flying car, damnit?

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgh!!! (Insert extreme expletives here) and that pretty much sums it up.

Technically it’s not illegal to Unilocal and drive while parked on the 805!

Dear Dave M.,
I cannot speak for the person that created the ‘business’ page for the 805, as I do not who they are. What I can do is offer a possible reason. Perhaps it’s to amuse those poor souls trapped in the 805 parking lot during rush hour traffic.
Note: To those less than intelligent So Cal drivers that should not have their license, I am not condoning text/​googling/​yelping while driving. But when you’re stopped, you’re not driving, right?

I like the 805. I’ve traveled this entire stretch numerous times. To me, the best area of the freeway is in Mission Valley with the I-​8 interchange up to Murray Ridge Road. Due to the slope of the freeway in this area, sometimes you can pick up an extra 15 mph of speed if you’re not careful. CHP are also notorious of staking out that particular stretch to catch would-​be speeders as well.
Traffic flow really isn’t any better than the other freeways so expect delays during rush hour. However, San Diego County needs to do a better job at getting debris off the shoulder. Definitely looks unimpressive.

I cannot stand driving on the 805. I have used the 805 for 2 years now (because of my GPS) and the worst part of my day is getting in my car and having to battle traffic with people who think getting on and off the on-​ramps is how to get to and from work!
I don’t have a super long commute it is only from Point Loma to Sorrento Valley Road. It is a mystery to me why traffic in the morning is so backed up of I get it the people from east to west are trying to get off the 52… whatever learn how to zipper people. and then all of a sudden it opens up, explain that one. I don’t even want to mention the unnecessary construction.
So I urge people if you don’t have to use it don’t. I have now decided that I will take the 5 from now on!!!

Seeing as I travel up and down this freeway several times a week, I guess it’s appropriate that I toss up a review. I really only travel the stretch south of Mira Mesa Blvd and north of University Ave, so I’ll spare the rest of the so-​called Jacob Dekema Freeway (although nobody actually calls it that) from any criticism.
+5 stars for the bridge going over Mission Valley. What a spectacle of concrete engineering.
–2 stars from that bumpy patch of pavement on the southbound 805 between Nobel Dr and Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
+1 stars for watching planes come and go from Miramar.
–2 stars for hopelessly slow traffic on the southbound 805 between Mira Mesa Blvd and Balboa Ave EVERY SINGLE DAY between 4pm and 6:30pm.
+1 stars for dodging aforementioned traffic by getting on the Clairemont Mesa and Balboa exits, failing to merge to the right, and getting right back on to the freeway. This is probably illegal, but I guess I can always pretend that I took the wrong exit by mistake.
–2 stars for difficulties in moving to the right line in order to take the Adams Ave exit, while the incoming traffic from the 8 blocks my way.
+2 stars for Christmas lights on the University Ave bridge.
That comes to 3 stars total. That sounds about right.
