Specialties

Public Recycling Center — Includes a Buy-​Back Center for CRV recyclables and free Drop-​Off Center for scrap metal, cardboard, electronics, other recyclables, latex paint, batteries, sharps and some other household hazardous waste.

Transfer Station — Accepts household and business garbage, green waste and wood, appliances, concrete and asphalt, clean dirt, mixed demolition debris, tires, and other non-​hazardous materials and items.

Free Tours — RethinkWaste offers free tours of the Shoreway Facility and bus transportation for 4th through 6th grade classes in the RethinkWaste Service Area. Public Open House Days are held the third Thursday of every month (except for August) for the general public. The tours offer students and the community an opportunity to learn what happens to their materials once they are collected.

Free Compost Giveaway — Residents in the RethinkWaste service area can now get free compost year-​round at Shoreway. Please inquire at the scale house.

History

Established in 1984.

The Shoreway Environmental Center, a Recycling Center and Transfer Station owned by RethinkWaste, is a local, state and national award-​winning facility that offers safe and convenient recycling and solid waste services for the public.

Residential and commercial solid waste and recyclable materials that are collected by the franchise hauler, Recology San Mateo County, are taken to Shoreway for processing and shipment. The facility is operated by a private company, South Bay Recycling, on behalf of RethinkWaste.

RethinkWaste is a joint powers authority of twelve public agencies (Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, the County of San Mateo and the West Bay Sanitary District) in San Mateo County and is a leader in the delivery of innovative waste reduction and recycling programs.
