History

Established in 1982.

Able Computer Repair was the only computer repair store in San Mateo in 1982. The second store was Computerland. This was before Apple and before IBM even before Windows. Operating systems and computers were more basic then and computers were very slow. Able has evolved with the technology into a full service computer organization. LAN, WAN and now Cloud Networking Able has seen it all. Able has created a loyal customer base of both business and residential users. User friendly and business savy have made relationships with some of our customers last longer then 25 years!

Founding owner of Able Computer in 1982. With more University Degrees than a thermometer, his computer training for the most part was self taught. Despite this fact Jerry is certified by Novell, Microsoft and Cisco as an engineer.

Wow, once again Jerry came through for me — he could have taken the easy way out and reinstalled Windows and charged me more, but instead, dug deep into his Bag O’ Tricks and got it to start up, installed over 200 updates (!) and wow, my Dell XPS-​9100 now runs quiet and smooth as a kitten — like butta. Best money spent this year. Highly recommended!

I looked at Unilocal for a PC Tech shop that could diagnose my office PC that I’d been having trouble with. I was greeted by an Asian man who took me to the back of the shop and proceeded to be the most condescending idiot I’ve met in a long time. I believe he just tagged me as an older woman and figured he could get away with pretty much telling me I didn’t know anything at all, about pretty much everything. Unfortunately I am very much a geek and I DO KNOW A LOT about my PC. I’m not up-​to-​date with hardware issues which is why I went there to begin with. I took my PC and left and was just happy to get out of there. What a horrible shop!

We’ve taken our computers to them a couple of times; the first time it was «dead in the water» and Jerry saved all my precious photos, cleaned it up and got it back and running. The second time it turned out to be a minor thing. Both times I have been impressed by their knowledge, and their way of doing business — I will never go to any other computer repair — these guys are great!

We have run into a lot of viruses recently, and we had been using a different guy, who would come out and work on the computers in the office. Even after a lot of hours and a lot of money, the result was not as we had hoped. I found Jerry at Able on Unilocal,read the reviews. He turned out to be 1 block from my office. I took an infected computer over there and he had it cleaned out by the next day. the virus turned out to be ‘viruses’, (about 14 different trojans that were buried deep inside the computer), and he managed to get them all out. Faster, less expensive, and local. As my son would say, ‘double-​thumbs up”!

Brought in an older laptop that was running extremely slow. Spoke with Jerry who diagnosed the problem and came up with some possible solutions. We weren’t in a rush, and it took a few days to get it upgraded and running smoothly again. We would highly recommend Able Computer to anyone who needs an honest place with reasonable prices.

My laptop was attacked by a virus that took over complete control. I dropped it off with Able and they rooted it out while preserving my data (I hadn’t backup up in a while, of course). I feel they went the extra mile to save me expense and I appreciated it. Btw, the place has a «League of Extraordinary Gentlemen» clubhouse feel, complete with heavy punching bag used when the computers make them angry… Great job, guys.

My computer died, and after calling around a few places, Able Computer was by far the cheapest place that would look at it. $ 45 for a diagnosis. Even though the diagnosis was not good (I guess my motherboard/​ports shorted out) I was happy with the service they provided and will come here again if I ever have computer trouble.

I could not have been happier with the computer service I received at Able Computer. I especially liked that I was able to speak directly with the person doing the repair. So far I’ve been there twice and I will absolutely go back when I need the computer repaired again.

He runs an honest and reliable company who is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you understand. Fast diagnostically and quick turnaround. Cost is reasonable. Love the funky shop!

External Hard Drive Crashed. He ran tests and kept me updated. Though he was not successful in retrieving the data (it was a physical failure, that was well beyond repair), he was honest and provided good recommendations for places to go to take further steps.

No idea who JC got on a saturday but it wasn’t the guy I saw.
I showed up with a laptop and wanted to know if it was dead. The power died on me recently and not having a clue I wanted a quick assesment.
The ‘tech’ took the laptop plugged it in told me it was dead and charged me $ 45 for 2 mins work. Didn’t take it apart, didn’t check anything else.
He did offer that if I came back for a service ($ 95 an hour) and he was wrong about it being dead he would refund the $ 45 !!
I didn’t return.

These guys are great. True computer geeks that you will trust with your PC problems. Nearly lost everything on my PC but TJ was able to reinstall the OS and remove some damaging viruses… all for only 2 hours worth of charges.

You can always trust Able computer to take care of you honestly at a reasonable cost or they will recommend a low cost replacement rather than take your money to fix a piece of junk. They have been fixing my computers and doing calls to my business for about 20 yrs.

Called in on a Saturday, not knowing that they’re not usually open on Saturdays, but Jerry said he’d be there for the next hour, so come on down. Brought my presumed dead laptop, for which Jerry subsequently determined in five minutes that it was my power cable that was the problem (and told me that if the problem was any more complicated, he’d have suggested just getting a $ 400 laptop from Fry’s), and when I asked how much to pay, he said not to worry about it. I was so elated that I could hold off on buying a new laptop for a while longer, though, that I insisted on giving him something, so he proposed my buying him lunch, aka $ 5 for the taco truck outside. Done and done!
Sure, my issue wasn’t the most complicated technological thing in the world (in fact, someone had previously suggested I try another power cord in case that was the problem, but I was too lazy), but I liked Jerry’s attitude, and will definitely go back if I run into any other problems with my computer.

Jerry is great — he knows his stuff, has MUCH more reasonable charges than Geek Squad and (as he says) has been in the computer business for longer than your average Geek Squad rep has been alive.
And what’s more he’s round the back of Best Buy San Carlos so he’s just as convenient!
