History

Established in 1973.

The school was started by Master Chotoku Omine from Okinawa at this very location as the headquarters for Okinawa for Shorin-Ryu (Matsubayashi) in the West, and Susan Budge was the assistant and a Black Belt Instructor at that time. She continued the dojo when Master Omine died in 1975. Over the years, we have always maintained our ties to, and credentials from Okinawa, the place where Karate was born, and we have attempted to keep the authentic teachings and attitude alive in order to aid students in their self-development without succumbing to modern business techniques. As we and our oldest students became much older, we added in 2001 our yoga program in the tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar to provide an authentic, proven lineage for continued physical and mental training and well being, and to offer the public the opportunities this wonderful yoga provides. Just like in Okinawa, our school mixes the seriousness of practice, with the warmth and joy of family values.

Meet the Manager

Susan B.

Manager

Kyoshi Susan’s mentor in college was mythology teacher Joseph Campbell at Sarah Lawrence, 1964. She started studying this karate in N.Y.C. with master Zenko Heshiki in 1968, and in 1969, Zen meditation and Japanese Zen archery continuing both for most of her adult years. In 1971, she was invited to the karate Headquarters in Okinawa, where she was the first woman to train and earn a black belt there. Upon returning to the States, she became the student of karate master Chotoku Omine, and added Japanese tea ceremony practice to her life beginning in 1976. Over the years she has been a serious meditation student, starting with the very severe Rinzai Zen method to her cherished Tibetan masters since 1990. She offers meditation classes to karate and yoga students and their families at no charge at the school by appointment. Susan holds the rank of 7-dan Black Belt since 1998.
