Comfortable and casual, Vela at Paloma Blanca, located in Alamo Heights next door to Paloma Blanca Mexican Cuisine, is the perfect place to gather with friends or significant others.

History

Established in 2008.

Excerpts from the San Antonio Business Journal — October 2, 2009

Local entrepreneur Nelly Mendoza Olsen has taken the concept of wine and dine and turned it into one of Alamo Heights’ most happening hot spots.

Olsen opened Vela Wine Bar, located next door to Paloma Blanca, last October and despite a few hurdles says the bar has turned out to be a dream come true.

«My brother and I had this idea about having a wine bar,» Olsen recalls. «We wanted to do the wine bar because it is needed in Alamo Heights. There are wine bars downtown and wine bars on the north side of town, but there wasn’t anything around Alamo Heights.»

Today, the small, quaint bar attracts dozens of people each night giving the urban crowd a unique place to sit back and enjoy good wine, small plates and spirits.

«Alamo Heights needed a chic, romantic place, something small and cozy where young professionals could come and have a drink and appetizer.»

Meet the Business Owner

Nelly O.

Business Owner

Nelly Mendoza Olsen is great example of hard work and passion turning into success. She came to this country from her home in Veracruz, Mexico when she was 18 and could only speak a few words of English. But she was determined to achieve her dreams of running her own business and with restaurant experience in her family, Nelly started as a hostess at Paloma Blanca Mexican Cuisine.

From that initial position, Nelly worked in every area of Paloma Blanca including server, floor manager, bar tender, some-time cook, and secretary/office manager and she literally worked her way up to become Vice President and General Manager, mastering customer service and leadership by example. Nelly was instrumental in Paloma’s move to its current location, as well as implementing customer friendly options like Paloma’s expanded curbside food To-Go, Paloma delivery and online ordering.

Nelly was also the driving force behind the concept and opening of Vela at Paloma Blanca, which she co-owns.
