University Oaks

This will be fun.
I am writing this as an alum. I lived at University Oaks for two semesters and a summer. Saying it was a bad experience would be an understatement, but I promise to include what little joy there was to be had from this place in this review.
I moved to San Antonio not knowing anyone except my brother and his wife who were both residents at UTHSCSA. I went to UTSA because my brother live in San Antonio, and while I wanted to attend school outside of my hometown, I wanted to be close to family.
Because I didn’t know anyone, I went to University Oaks and signed up for them to match me with a roommate. My roommate and I got along for a while, although he was a minimalist who insisted on using my stuff on a first come, first serve basis. We ended up having a falling out where (long story short) he locked me out of the apartment with the deadbolt because I had moved my TV into my room instead of the living room. His parents were in town (they were from Nuevo Laredo and didn’t speak English) and when he finally opened the door he tried to keep me out. I got through him without lifting an arm or anything aggressive and went to my room and locked the door. Later on the cops show up and, since he had «witnesses,» accused me of assault. It is apparently regulation at University Oaks that if a charge is pressed against one roommate, the accused student must leave the apartment that night. Okay, fine. I was glad to be leaving there to go to a one bedroom efficiency and not have to deal with him anymore. The problem was that the campus police treated me like a monster because his parents (who couldn’t see the door from where the «crime» took place) said that I punched him. They gave me an hour to gather my essentials and leave. I had to call my brother, who was on his first anniversary with his wife in the Hill Country, to come help me get my stuff out of the apartment. At the time I didn’t have a car. The two original officers left and had another come in to watch me while I moved my stuff. I explained to him that I don’t trust my stuff being left behind with my former roommate and that I needed more time to get everything out. The officer snapped back by saying «I’m not here to baby sit you!» So I had to leave most of my stuff behind for over two weeks until they let me get everything out. Eventually I had my supposed court date. I took a bus all the way down town, missing classes, to appear only to find that the cops had never actually filed a report… I was never actually accused.
«Long story short.» Believe me, there are more details that make everything even more ridiculous.
The walls in these apartments are paper thin, so you will hear everything that is going on next door, upstairs, and in the living room. Everything is outdated and breaks all the time. I spent three days during the summer without air conditioning because that’s how long it took maintenance to fix it. You really learn how much we take AC for granted in a situation like that.
My other roommate was very cool. I also really enjoyed being on campus because it was easy to meet up with friends. That concludes the positive aspects of U Oaks.
If you live here, you’re a chump. It costs more than the luxury apartments down the street and you receive way less. I’d recommend Broadstone Ranch apartments. They have shuttle service and are only a mile from campus. I spent some of the best times of my life at Broadstone.

Honestly I like living here and I don’t know why they get such bad reviews. I feel so much safer here especially after the kidnapping at aspen and recent shootings across the street. The only problem I’ve had is with a technicality regarding renewing my lease but that’s finally been resolved after a few calls. Thank you james. Other than that I feel safe here and I love how close to campus I am. They are renovating r right now so there is some noise at times but it’s for the best and the benefits outweigh the negatives. I don’t know why people say the pool is always closed from what I’ve seen it’s usually open and I’ve been several times. And for those complaining about maintenance entering your place I suspect you’ve never rented before. It’s pretty normal, they’ve come in about three times since I’ve been there this whole year. Really not that bad. And they email you first if it’s not related to a request you’ve sent, if you even check your emails.

Please for the love of all things good, DO NOT LIVE HERE. This place is horrible and not worth the money they charge you. It’s tiny tiny tiny, everything is old and worn down, & it has this moldy smell to it no matter which building you live in. I was dumb enough to sign the Over-​The-​Summer Lease and now I’m stuck here over the summer too. I’m just waiting for my lease to end so I can hurry up and leave this horrid place. They WILL harass you if you’re even a little bit late on your rent. Not everyone has mommy and daddy paying for their rent Oaks, some of us actually work all damn day just to stay at your place and every time I pay rent, I get overfilled with sadness because it’s equivalent to flushing my hard earned money down the drain. Aside from having a place to sleep at night, this place is a total shit hole. The toilets will constantly get backed up and you’ll constantly have to request maintenance. More than half of the power outlets DONT work & there’s not even a freaking light in the living room!!! Would you believe that?! They have a light switch but no light! What kind of bullshit is that??? No wonder when you come to tour they only show you the MODEL apt, bc if they show you what you’d actually be renting, no one would rent with them. They think that just because they do a new paint job and replace the AC System, they’re bettering themselves. No! You are not! You are still not worth the money I’m paying! Please do not live here. You’ve been warned. I wish I would have read the reviews in this place before renting. It would have saved me a bunch of disappointment and anger. Oh and if you still do decide to live here even after reading all the horrid reviews, just know they FREQUENTLY ENTER your apt whether you’re home or not. & you basically agree to it in your lease. It’s a total invasion of privacy and if you still wanna live here and think maybe just maybe we’re all crazy bitter college kids, then go ahead and take your chance with this place. See you in a year on this page writing the same horrid review we all are.

These on campus apartments are decently nice. They are very much starter apartments, and are somewhat cramped, but are a lot better than oncampus dorms. But phase 3 is still pretty new and are still in good shape. Overall probably the best place to live on campus. But if youre able to, then offcampus apartments are far better and cheaper.

This place was my home my first semester at UTSA, and I couldn’t wait to get out. The apartments are falling apart, and I can’t even recall how many requests I had to put in to maintenance which all took about 3 days to be fixed. The walls are paper thin, which is a less than ideal situation for students, and makes for sleepless nights. The free internet runs around the same speed of AOL 5.0 and my list can just keep going on and on. save yourself from awful student housing.

So, living here is literally A-​Ok. Everything kind of balances out.
It is small. But, it is pretty safe.
The furniture is new. But there is no storage place.
The kitchen is ugly. But everything works in it.
Maintenance takes a while to get to work on our stuff. But, they are nice.
Everything is pretty much paid for with your rent. So you only pay once a month to one entity. That is good for students who need help in learning how to budget.
