Really dig the layout and atmosphere of this establishment. The staff is very prompt, professional, and friendly. They have a good(not amazing) selection of draft and bottle beer and full bar. The menu has some pretty non-traditional items(e.g., bone marrow, shishitos, etc.). Overall food quality, drinks, service earns a very solid 4 stars. Happy hour drink & appetizer special(everything half price) PLUS a 25% discount for military & veterans makes the 5-star rating a no-brainer. Other bonus: VERY clean restrooms.

Delicious cocktails, appetizers and sandwiches. We left the restaurant absolutely stuffed and under $ 75 for three people.

We came here with a group of 10 after a miserable experience at Whiskey Cake. This is like Whiskey Cake with the hipster vibe, but none of the inflated egos, stuck-up staff, or nasty beards. The menu is fairly small, but what they do have they cook well. I had the Green Chili Grilled Cheese sandwich, and I’m still dreaming about it a week later. It was soooo good. I’m also very picky about my fries, and theirs did not disappoint one bit — hot and crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and perfectly seasoned. Not one person in our party had anything negative to say about the food, and I will definitely be back for that grilled cheese. I also thought they had an inventive cocktail menu. I really enjoyed the two Mezcal Mules I had. The only draw back to that was the teeny straw they served with it that was constantly blocked by fresh blackberries and seeds. I just used a regular straw and it was fine. The service was great too. I like that she was always around to refill our drinks and check on our table. She was attentive but not intrusive. I mean it as a great compliment when I say we hardly noticed her. I hate going out to eat to socialize with friends and have a waiter that is too chatty and tries to «work us» for a tip. She was very polite, and she was not in anyway impersonal. I will definitely be back in the future. If you’re thinking of going Whiskey Cake or the wait is too long, come here instead!

If you’re looking for excellent happy hour, I would highly recommend this place. Not only are the apps half off but so is the wine… WHOO! They have a wine made just for this restaurant called Elle and carter and I liked their Cabernet(bold and smooth) Service is excellent, extremely attentive and very interactive with our table. I forgot to mention the best part, the manager personally came around with… A BIRTHDAYCAKE!!!(And you can get it even if it’s not you birthday! Yayyy)

I hate to have to review this restaurant with 1 Star because the food tasted decent however despite how much I may have enjoyed it, I found a short, dark, curly hair in one of my three hot dogs in my «Hot Dog 3 ways Appetizer». The kind of hair you ESPECIALLY don’t want to find in your food. We notified the bartender who immediately called in the female manager. First off, the manager asked to see the hair(I guess for proof?), THENASKEDIF I WANTEDTHEHOTDOGSTOBEMADE?! Of course I said yes and she brought a new entrée in a timely manner. When we were finished with our meal, we received the check. We were absolutely livid to find the bartender had to apologize for the MANAGERNOTCOMPINGTHEHOTDOGAPPETIZER! He, being the saving grace of the restaurant, refilled our wine instantly, was so attentive, and even covered our wine for the night. He apologized that his manager didn’t cover the hotdogs. For the $ 18 I paid for the hot dogs, I expected much more from the management in this scale of a restaurant. Had it not been for the amazingly attentive and caring bartenders, I would not only never return, but also make sure to let everyone I know not to even bother trying The General Public with so many others great places near by. Extremely disappointed.

I came for the burgers based on my Instagram feed, and they did not disappoint. He meat was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. I also had the fried chicken on the appetizers section and was pleasantly surprised. The fried chicken wings are season with chili and tossed in a honey sauce, they remind me of chicken wings from a Thai place. The portions are pretty big, and the price was average. I think I paid around $ 13 for my burger and fries, and felt like it was worth it. The service was really good. I came on a Saturday evening, and was immediately seated in a booth. They also have a bar area, and an outdoor area that can be closed in when its cold. The server was was nice and kept our water topped off, but our appetizers came after our entrée. I’m not sure if she forgot to put in the order, or if it took longer than usual. I saw older singles, couples and new families with younger kids here, so a little of everything. They have a complementary sundown shot that I was unaware of, it was a fun surprise. I didn’t order drinks this time around, but I will definitely be back to chow down and try their cocktails.

If you’re looking for a trendy atmosphere, ice cold brews, fancy cocktails, and delicious fare, this is a place you’ll have to try! First, let me start off by saying the draft beer selection offers some excellent local selections as well as a couple of mainstream picks. You won’t have to worry about lukewarm beer here because the beer is kept ICE cold! It was perfect! They also offer many signature cocktails with fresh fruit and garnishes, which is great for the non-beer lovers. Secondly, the atmosphere is upscale and trendy, and the service was top notch, which is great for date nights or special occasions. Lastly, the food was incredible! The fried peppers and mushrooms, served with a spicy cream dipping sauce are fantastically unique and flavorful! These are nothing like the fried mushrooms/jalapeños you’d get at a simple diner. The food prices are perfect for the more frugal diners and the drink prices are inline with most places in the area. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5, was the parking. However, limited parking is to be expected for the weekend dinner crowd. That said, there is a large parking garage with plenty of space just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

Thoroughly enjoyed this dinner before the movies. I’m sad to say didn’t have the birthday cake dessert, but I’m glad to say that I will be going back to give it a shot. Had the grilled cheese, they were out of the chili stuff for it, and ended up giving me options for substitution. I opted for the chicken, they put full chicken breast in my sandwich. It was awesome. The fries amazing. Defi will go back and get the cake this time too!

Nice atmosphere and interior design. But… My hamburger came with both sides of the buns burnt. When I am spending around $ 15 for a hamburger, I don’t expect any of it to be burnt. I told the waiter and he had another one made that was not burnt. Letting a plate with burnt food go out of the kitchen cost you 2 stars in my book. Not having multiple IPAs on draft in your large bar will cost you another one star. Hoppadillo is their only IPA. Thanks for an IPA, but why no selection? Services was fine, location is good. I won’t come back, but your experience will probably be better.

First and foremost, in my opinion, there isn’t a lot of selection on the menu. The limited selection they do have pretty much requires you to be experimental or just get a classic burger or fish and chips. So we ordered an appetizer to start. We initially ordered the oysters and shrimp, only to be told 5 minutes later they were out of shrimp. Odd. Then they brought the oysters out 10 minutes later… guess they had to catch them. They served the oysters with a shot of vodka but didn’t explain why… so I’m confused. Next we ordered two entrees, the tamale pie and the green chile Mac n cheese. The server told me, 10 minutes later, they were out of Mac n cheese. When I made a comment about them being out of everything he responded«it’s been a long day.» Ok. The managers did come and apologize and made a recommendation of the crab cakes. So I changed my order which was unfortunate because I really wanted to try the Mac n cheese. Tamale pie– it was ok. The chili lacked flavor. Tastes almost like a spaghetti sauce. Crab cakes– were ok. Lacked some flavor. But the brussel sprouts that accompanied were on point. Side of fries– good Service is slow. Our server rarely checked on us. We moved our dirty dishes to the edge of the table as a hint and he would still walk past us several times without thinking to clear the table. He didn’t clear them until we were almost done with our meal. I was disappointed. We selected this place because of the positive Unilocal reviews. I’m not sure I’ll return. I usually will give a place a second shot when they comp a bad experience, but even after the initial concerns it just never got better. And also a 20 minute wait for an order in a place that’s not super packed… I just don’t know. The place has potential to be a great place but the hey need to fix the customer service and the food shortage issues.

Another new restaurant going for a hipster ambiance. They have a very eccentric menu with some classic dishes and sandwiches for those less adventurous. The fish and chips were one of their signature dishes; kind of greasy but the malt vinegar helped balance it. The crab cakes are a small portion but the side of Brussels sprouts compliment very well. If you go for lunch time, I recommend their rose cocktail which is only available before 4PM.

We stopped by The GP on a recent Friday night, and I was a bit surprised we were able to get right in. Didn’t this place just open? Anyway, we were seated promptly, and our waitress was quick to help us. My party ordered quite a few options for the table, and we ended up sharing all of it. We started with the seasonal spread, a white bean hummus with some yummy cracker type chips to go along with it. It was pretty small and we devoured it pretty quickly. Next we went with the meat and cheese board; standard options that were just okay. For entrees, we chose the crab cakes and the green chili grilled cheese with fries. Again, all of it was okay. Pretty standard fare with high prices. The crab cakes were good, and the brussels sprouts were delicious, but all of it was a bit greasy. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a grilled cheese, and the fries were good as well. Overall, a good place to go in the Rim if you’re craving some standard pub food. Prices are a bit high, but the atmosphere is nice, and the food and drink options are varied and are sure to please everyone.

Finally got to check this place out and I couldn’t be happier. We came in and appetizers were ½ off which was perfect since we were planning to order the cheese&meat plate. The ham was perfectly cured and the honey was soooooo good. Okay, so I got the fish & chips. Which I absolutely loved. Being from the coast I’m a little spoiled when it comes to seafood and was completely shocked in the quality and freshness of the fish. Like other reviewers, it did not taste like it was frozen. Which is a huge deal since I feel like most restaurants in San Antonio have a — almost freezer burnt taste. The quality AND quantity were on point, three huge servings with a large bucket of fries and a side of house-made tarter sauce. I will definitely be ordering again. Pork&beans– I can’t say too much about this since my bf got this. He ate it way too fast and said he loved it. I had a bite and the cornbread with the kale really complimented each other along with the perfectly cooked pork. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was very nice. I loved how I could go into a restaurant and not be surrounded by crying kids for once. This is the type of place where smoking a cigar and drinking a whiskey would look appropriate.

Another trendy gastropub. Another letdown. I was excited by all the great reviews and the very interesting menu items — tamale pie, fish and chips, fried chicken — simple things that I expect to be elevated. Well, they were elevated in a way– by being excessively expensive. My friends and I ordered the fried chicken and hotdogs 3 ways as appetizers. The hotdog buns were awesome, reminding me of buttered lobster rolls. Seriously, a good dog needs a delicious bun. The hotdogs themselves were pretty good, our favorite being the chili dog. But was it better than say a sonic chili dog? For $ 16, I would say no. But of all the items I ordered tonight, I liked these most. I would probably order them again as a main course in the weird chance that I end up coming to General Public again. The fried chicken was soooo sweet… And not in a good way. It was very sweet and spicy. I didn’t mind the spice but the sweetness was off putting. I ordered tamale pie, my friend ordered fish and chips and her husband ordered the wagyu beef sandwich. Both their dishes came with fries. The fries were not crispy at all. They had pretty good flavor but we’re kind of soggy and unevenly seasoned(some very salty fries and some bland ones mixed together). My tamale pie was so sweet! It had a tasty but incredibly misplaced carrot and onion slaw on top. The tamales were way too sweet and the chicken was bathed in a very sweet, hoisin kind of sauce. I only ate half and didn’t bother taking to go. My friend’s fish and chips were ok as well. I liked her entrée better than mine. The fish chunks were huge. But they barely gave her any tartar sauce. I’m sure they would have given her more if she asked but it just seemed weird that for that much fish, you get about a tablespoon of sauce. And no ketchup for her fries! I didn’t try the wagyu beef sandwich but my friend and her husband didn’t like it either. It was hugely disappointing on the food front. They offered shots at sundown to everyone in the restaurant. The shots are to be downed together. That made things a bit fun. Service was great. Our waitress kept my glass filled all night, which I really appreciated. And when I made reservations, the hostess called to confirm, something not all restaurants have done for me. One thing I have to note — since this area is developing, it seems the plumbing is having some serious issues. As noted by another reviewer, the ladies room was not clean. They had a great farm sink and nice smelling hand soap and even mouthwash. But those toilets were pretty gross. I don’t know about coming back here. It was hard to justify the cost for the taste of the food. Even the ambience couldn’t make up for it. If you want to hang out with your friends on a Friday night, I recommend La Gloria. If you are in the La Cantera area, Whisky Cake might be a better option.

I would say this is pretty typical fare for a gastropub. I would’ve loved to love it, but in all mediocrity, it did well for being semi-new. We got here for brunch on a Sunday, and several glasses were dropped in front of our table. No biggie, but still messed with the«experience.» I didn’t get a drink, but the rose seemed refreshing according to my friends. The bacon burger was pretty solid, but maybe too pricey. I added the egg, and I must say I’ve had better bacon egg burgers elsewhere(try the Hoppy monk egg burger) Nevertheless, I’d like to come back and update my review because the modern, yet cozy and cabin-like feel was super cool to be around.

Delicious food, tasty cocktails, sexy atmosphere, and spot-on service, all make for a good Saturday night out. The General Public provides all these things and more. It’s a new addition to The Rim and I only discovered it about week ago. I put it on my radar for new places to try, and I was not disappointed. We arrived about 9pm, and were seated right away. We noticed that larger parties that had arrived after us had a slight wait time. Our waitress Taylor was friendly, attentive and even gave us very helpful menu selection tips. For an appetizer we ordered the spread which is a hummus dip. We ordered the Fish and Chips and the Crab Cakes for entrees. Everything was super delicious and cooked perfectly. The crab cakes had a light breading and a lot of crab which is always pleasing. Let me say that I do not really care for fish, but the Fish and Chips were really good! If you love fish and chips, I would definitely recommend ordering that! It’s refreshing to find good new trendy places in the area. We will definitely be back for the nice atmosphere and to try other delicious items on the menu.

Came here late at night after an event and was in the mood for their tamale pie. Now let me tell you this place has definitely won me over. The ambiance here is very laid back with a pulse of eclectic livelihood. The waitress I had this evening was amazing and on top of her game! Taylor knocked it out of the park. She is one of those few golden people in hospitality who understand the importance in customer service. Super attentive and made sure we had the right amount of service. I will recommend for those who are adventurous to try the Barkeep Whimsy drinks! They served me an egg white old fashioned(the original way served) and it was heaven in a glass! Once again come on over and show them some love. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — «Would you like a complimentary shot?» Now those are words you don’t hear at a restaurant often if ever. After a quick explanation it was made to my knowledge that this was something they offer daily around sunset every evening. Accompanied with a speech from one of the bartenders allows you to gather whom The General Public are… a sense of creating family. We had a lemon gimlet shot which was super fresh and tangy. The décor within this place is very Anthropologie meets Austin and I dig it as such. From the faux antlers to the rustic chandeliers this place has its own personality with a dash of funk. No need to worry about who works there as the servers and bartenders all have a uniform which is super trendy and creates a sense of unison. I must say the appetizers were total knockouts and had us in awe. From their homemade crusted chicken wings with a hint of cumin and slice(I honestly didn’t want to share them but didn’t want to be that guy) to the cauliflower with Parmesan cheese and garlic butter(that’s healthy still right?) all were delightful treats. The star of the night was there tamale pie which was so damn good. From the spices to the pulled chicken it was cooked to perfection over a bedding of cornbread. Can’t wait to come back I must say to my Unilocal community!

This place was pretty mediocre. I really wanted to like it more than I did, but a few things here really bothered me. I came in on a Sunday afternoon with my cousins for a post-weekend meal. First things first, the ladies room was completely disgusting. Of the two stalls, both toilets were dirty.(Not just a little dirty, like, actually looked like they hadn’t been wiped down in days.) I tried to use the slightly less dirty one, only to discover that the handle of the toilet was broken off, so limited options pushed me into the first. That was cool. As I went to the sink to wash my hands, I discovered that the handle of the sink was also broken off, so I used the one on the left. Really bizarre. Like, fix your handles and pay someone to clean your bathroom daily? The décor of this place is unique. The color palette is slightly nautical and they have excellent light fixtures and general décor. I particularly liked the tile and the copper ceiling. The front windows are very large, but their brightness feels sort of uncomfortable compared to the dark colors of the restaurant while you’re dining. I think sheer curtains to diffuse the light would be nice, but if not, I’d recommend coming in the evening if you’re aiming for ambiance. Now, food! I had the chicken apple club and it was pretty good. Best part was the toasted sourdough that it came on, which had that pan-seared crunchiness to it and a nice buttery flavor. Also the fries. The biggest hit at our table though was definitely the crab cakes, which came recommended by our waitress when we asked her for the best dish. Honestly though, our waitress wasn’t very good. She seemed notably frustrated and impatient with our table, and made sure to let us know toward the end how she had yet to have a break. It felt unprofessional. I would have had more sympathy for her complaint had she been more polite to our table. Engagement from waitstaff really makes or breaks your experience, and both the women who helped with us gave lackluster service. It was disappointing. The house cocktails looked really wonderful. I wouldn’t be opposed to coming back one evening for an appetizer and a few drinks, but my first experience was adequate at best.
