At Texas State Optical — Stone Oak, your local optometrist, we take the time to get to know you and your eyes, because the gift of vision isn’t one that should be taken for granted. Whether you have 20⁄20 vision and just need a yearly checkup or you need specialty lenses for a condition like kertatoconus, we can help ensure that you are seeing your personal best.

Of course, getting the right prescription is important, but so is understanding the results of your eye exam. We know that eye exams can be stressful, especially if you have symptoms that you are worried about. That’s why our optometrists, Dr. Renee Dunlap and Dr. Kara Farmer, take the necessary time to listen to your concerns, review the results of your eye exam and let you know exactly what needs to be done and why. Dr. Dunlap and Dr. Farmer are both certified Glaucoma specialists.

History

Established in 2010.

The first place of business was an office in Boerne. We have been at the Stone Oak location for a number of years and enjoy serving the local community.

Renee Dunlap, OD, Board Certified Optometrist by the American Board of Optometry. Origianlly from Chicago. Practiced in Boerne before opening up here in Stone Oak.

Dr. Renee Dunlap provides eye exams for patients of all ages-​pediatrics through geriatrics. She manages and treats eye diseases including, glaucoma, dry eyes, allergies, infections, injuries, macular degeneration and diabetic retinal disease.

Dr. Renee Dunlap has 22 years experience practicing state-​of-​the-​art optometry. She graduated cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University with a BA in Biology and receive her Doctor of Optometry degree magna cum laude from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1990.

Love this place! I have been trying for years in Austin to find someone that can fit me in torque mono vision contacts with my astigmatism and finally!!! Dr. Renee is awesome! Very flexible as far as scheduling also which is helpful.

Experience would have been 5 stars but the unfriendly two receptionists ruined a prefect review. I arrived at 8:50am and the reception floor had no chairs and was getting mopped. Neither women acknowledged me at all. They spoke to each other in Spanish the entire time I sat waiting for my eye screening which made me feel like they were talking about me or something they didn’t want anyone to hear. While checking out another customer they showed no signs of urgency whatsoever. The technician, Mark was professional and explained every eye test performed. Andy was a great help to me in selecting my frames and seemed genuinely attentive about my concerns getting prescribed Progressives for the first time. He showed me a few different tint options and was very knowledgeable and friendly. Dr. Hutchins was very thorough in her eye exam, answered all of my questions and concerns and never rushed me through the appointment. Overall a good experience but the front desk needs new people who care to go with the rest of the staff who are wonderful.

Received my contacts from this place and had horrible experience. Decided to give them a second chance and was def a bad idea. Worst customer service ever. Will not return for my next eye exam.

The initial visit was very uncomfortable because when checking my insurance the receptions actually billed my insurance fraudulently, so when I went in for my exam she stated my insurance did not cover the appointment. She had to re verify with my insurance that it was her mistake and was able to get my insurance approval. Then when I saw my doctor I informed her that i could not see and that I could feel my eyes getting weaker, the doctor stated that my eyes just need to get used to the new prescription. Going with the doctors advice I kept the prescription. Six months later my eyes have not adjusted and have actually gotten worse. I can not see at night, and now have to pay out of pocket for a second opinion because this location would not do a follow up based on the time of the initial visit. The whole office is unprofessional every time i have called it has been a ten minute hold, when I go in the personal conversations are inappropriate as well as the staff asked question about their personal accounts because they saw who my employer was on my insurance card.

I haven’t even met the doctor so I don’t know who he/​she is. I’m writing this review because the receptionist are completely rude. They were rude when I was making the appointment and rude when confirming my appointment the next day. They lost a potential customer. If you can’t answer the phones properly or be nice to people when scheduling an appointment, you can do some seriously business damage. I ignored the first time they were being rude when I was on the phone with them. But them calling me and being rude to confirm my appointment time i had it. I am looking else where for an eye doctor. I won’t be spending my money if I’m not getting good services all around.

Dr. Renee Dunlap and her staff offer superior vision services, from checkups and diagnosis, to large frame selection and fitting your glasses to your needs. The staff appreciates your time by keeping to appointment times as much as feasibly possible. I have been pleased with the lenses I have ordered thru this TSO office. Even when I ordered progressive lenses, the staff helped me learn what to expect as I became accustomed to these new lenses. I’ve been «seeing» Dr. Dunlap for over six years, and I appreciate her knowledge and accuracy in diagnosis and prescriptions.
I would give 5 stars, except there seems to be a revolving door of the doctor assistants. While I understand and appreciate the need for staff development, there are innate skills required for a medical staff assistant to possess, such as interpersonal skills, a gentle and confident touch, and knowledge and accuracy on the reason for visits. If the job candidate does not have the innate skills, then find someone else. I get nervous enough going to any doctor. Starting my visit with a nervous, unqualified doctor’s assistant is not the way to a good overall experience at the eye doctor.

TSO Stone Oak has the best glasses. Velma recommended Verilux, for the first time in 5 years I can see with my glasses. I can actually usemy glasses. The PLUS is that they have a 90 day guarantee. I have three pairs of glasses that sit in my drawer — useless. I was so happy, I bought two pairs. This is a great place and the staff is awesome. The prices are also great. I got two pairs for the price i had got one pair at a different place.

I am a repeat customer and have had consistently good service every time I visited the office. Dr. Dunlap is very thorough and makes sure that you get a good fit for your contact lenses. The glasses seem to be a bit expensive but I have a very strong prescription so that is to be expected.

Terrible service and a waste of time. On my first visit there I spent over 3 hours at their office. I called ahead to make sure they had all of my insurance information and when I arrived they said they never received. The receptionist spent an hour on the phone trying to verify the information. Once finished, I found out that she had somehow managed to verify me with an insurance company I don’t have insurance with — really don’t understand how that is even possible. I spent another 45 minutes waiting. She could not answer any of my questions about copay or my coverage and was very rude. I still have yet to receive a correct Contact Lens Prescription. What a joke! Will not be back.

Genuinely nice staff from the receptionist to the doctor. Contacts ordered came in within three days of eye exam and glasses took about the same time. Doctor Dunlap has a great memory, approachable manner and drive to make sure your prescription is correct! Linda goes above and beyond for glasses style and fitting selection (even set up a private meeting with the distributor from Diesel for me to find the perfect pair). The wait time for appointments is spot on with no delay the multiple times I was in. Thank you!

Why did I just cancel the two appointments for my wife and I next week? Well we just completed my sons eye exam and were taken to be fitted for glasses and then just totally ignored by the other staff to help others while we just sat and watched it all.

Dr. Dulap is ok, but her office manager will run her to the ground. I went to pick up my son’s contact lenses and was told they were on backorder from the manufacturer (I called the manufacturer and was told this is not true). He said it would be 2 – 3 weeks before the lenses would be in, so he gave me 5 lenses (a different brand) to hold me over. I asked for a prescription so I could go elsewhere and buy a small quantity to last the 2 – 3 weeks and he gave me a prescription for «quantity 0», and he signed the doctor’s name himself, but it was a useless prescripton since it said dispense 0; he said that was all he could give me. Heather called me later (very sweet) and said the lenses would be in the next day. Nothing the manager said made ANY sense, and he was just rude in general, very lazy and unhelpful. I would not go back if he is still running the office.

Came here for my annual eye exam. Dr. Dunlap is wonderful. She really listens and is very thorough. The actual exam equipment seems to be top of the line and cutting edge technology (well, at least it seems very new and has a lot of buttons). Heather, the optician, is fab as well. They have a good selection of frames too.
