I was hungry one night after work and driving around town not really knowing where I was going but I did know what I wanted. And what I wanted was the spicy, savory deliciousness that can only be found in Mexican food. Now living on the Southside, there are literally hundreds of places to choose from when it comes to Mexican food. I sometimes go by convenience, sometimes by word of mouth and most of the time by my gut instinct. No pun intended. After driving around up and down Flores and Pleasanton, I saw the bright lights and a few cars at this little establishment. Now like any other street in San Antonio there is very little room to turn around, so I passed up the place and have to make a u-turn at an intersection nearby. I pulled up into the parking lot and parked in front of a Botanica. I stepped inside following another person who had walked in before me and like anybody else I followed his lead and picked up a menu and started to look at it although I chose to sit at a table being that I had just gotten out of work and was tired from being on my feet all day. After a few moments of looking at the menu and having a seat at the table, a nice homey waitress asked me if I wanted something to drink and I asked for my usual water. She came back with the water and the customary basket of chips and a little cup of salsa. By that time I have figured out what I wanted hand the spicy craving that I had could only be satisfied buy green enchiladas. She asked whether I would like chicken or cheese and I opted for poultry. She then asked whether I’d like flour or corn tortillas and I was a bit confused and ask her if she meant the kind that were to be rolled up in the enchiladas. See them smile and said that the plate comes with two tortillas which is pretty customary here in San Antonio. I asked if the corn tortillas were made in house and she said she would check to see if they had any and if they did she would bring those instead of flour. After a moment of gazing through the restaurant and watching the other people happily eat their meals, my food quickly arrived as I stuffed my mouth with the crispy tortilla chips and be perfectly balanced salsa. The plate was very well arranged and everything looked very delicious. The beans lacked a little pork flavor unlike so many of the other places nearby. The rice was nicely seasoned and not too overpowering thus making a great compliment to the entrée. The tortillas where homemade indeed and I was very pleased as I rolled one up and dipped it in the green sauce that was covering my enchiladas. I’ve been asked for a water of Tamarindo to help quench my thirst and spiciness of the enchilada sauce. This is my kind of place. No pretensions, no long waits, just plain good old fashioned Mexican food at a reasonable price. I guess if you don’t like it you can come back during daytime hours when the Botanica is open and see if you can do a little black magic of your own to get some revenge.
