Rob Cary Pet Resort

I am so very thankful for Rob Cary Pet Resort. I wouldn’t leave my Pom anywhere else. He is my baby and I don’t trust anyone else with him. I have been using them for years for grooming, boarding, and obedience class. LOVE THEM!!!

We boarded our 5 month old Boston Terrier at Rob Cary for 5 days, 4 nights. Our little princess is deaf, so I (being the very overprotective pet parent) provided all sorts of instructions including what hand signs she knows. They did not even bat an eye. They assured me that they have dealt with deaf dogs before and made me feel secure about leaving her there. We added some playtime options to make sure she was occupied and not missing us too much. And when we called (repeatedly) to check in on her, they always took the time to go see how she was doing. When we went to pick her up she was all smiles, healthy, and smelling good. I am completely satisfied with how Rob Cary and their wonderful staff took care of our puppy.

I would like to give a review of my experience on taking my 1year old lab to Rob Cary Pets Resort. I recently adopted my dog from ACS August 31, 2015, and that day he had gotten neutered. So 4 days later, I decided that I wanted to take my dog to doggy daycare, Friday September 5,2015. Due to I had doctor appointments and errands to run and did not want him to stay home all day in his crate. Before I took him that morning, I had called this place and was reassured that my dog would be taken care of, on the account of me being super nervous to trust someone else with my dog. When, I showed up to Rob Cary Pet Resort it was very busy inside and the lady working the front desk was very short with me. I had told her not to take my dog running outside or be rough with him; on the case of he is wearing a cone and has stiches. And the lady that morning that I was talking to told me, that he was in good hands. And then later in the afternoon I wanted to make sure he was okay and nothing was wrong with him, so I called at 1:00pm the Pet Resort and the lady had told me that he was doing fine. So I decided to run one more errand and then go pick him up. I showed up at Rob Cary Pet Resort at 3:40 pm, when a young girl that worked there brought him out. He was not wearing his cone. And as most dog owners know, dogs that get neutered must wear there cones at all TIMES, because the dogs will lick down there and can cause a infections. That’s why vets say do not bath your dog for 14 days until healed. So to my shock, when I had seen my dog with no cone, was upset. I had asked the young girl that brought him out, did the cone just come off or has it been off and how long? And she could not answer any of my questions; it was as though looking at a deer in headlights. Then another lady with glasses that worked there and heard what was going on, had come up to us to discuss the whole cone situation. The lady with the glasses told me she could tape the cone back together and checked his stitches and told me that it was a little swollen, but he would be fine. Also told me that the cone the vet gave him was cheap and sometimes they don’t hold up, and to wrap a sweatshirt around his neck and he wouldn’t lick. So then after she taped it, I left and was just horrified how they did not know how long the cone had been off and for the lady to tell me oh wrap a sweatshirt around his neck. That is worse than the $ 2 dollar cone the vet gave me, my lab would be able to lick still. So that night I went to PetSmart and purchased another cone that was $ 20. And also that night I noticed his private area was getting more swollen and Saturday it was even more swollen. So I took him on Sunday to the vet and the ACS vet told me that he had a hematoma in his testis’s and I asked what caused this and the vet told me, it was because his private area got wet. And then I proceeded to tell the vet about the PET Resort and the vet told me that’s when he probably licked himself. Then on Monday morning I noticed all this blood on my labs pillow and realized he was bleeding from his stiches and had to rush him to the animal hospital. Which he had to go back in surgery and get stiches re-​done, which the bill was 700. So on Tuesday I called the Pet Resort and talked to the owner and explained to her for their lack of supervision of my dog, he had to go through another surgery and fight an infection. The owner was EXTREMELY rude, she said that the day I dropped him off that someone that worked there at 2:00 noticed his cone was off and I asked the owner why was I not called and notified that my dog and broke it off, because if I was called I would have rushed to pick him up. And the owner would not answer the question. She basically told me that you get what you pay for. And that they do not like calling the owners of the pets, because some get annoyed, well sorry owner of Rob Cary Pet Resort, I am a dog owner that would not get annoyed. This was a very serious matter. And the Rob Cary Pet Resort also said that the reason why they didn’t put it back on at two was because it was broken, well my question was why when I picked him up at 3:40 the lady that wore glasses taped it back together! Basically blamed everything on me and took no responsibility what so ever and did not even apologize. If I had known they don’t take a good watch on dogs wearing there cones, I would have never taken him, that’s why I called the lady in the morning and asked her. I understand that my dog broke the cone, but they should have notified me ASAP, so I could have hurried and picked him up and bought a new one. My lab probably for close to two hours from taking off his cone was licking his privates. The owner if the resort basically had no customer service at all, the owner of this place clearly does not have customer service skills, quit sad. She just lost a paying customer. I entrusted my dog in the Rob Cary Pet Resort, but sadly was a big mistake.

I moved to San Antonio year ago and the previous boarding place suggested rob carries. So I decided to give them a try. Left my dog there over the weekend while I went out of town for work. when I returned he was a mess! his nerves are shot he was so ready to leave that place and on top of it he had dog feces in between his toes on all of his feet. Not noticing the dog feces until I got down the road in the truck. Since it was his first time there I decided to give them one more try three months later exact same issues. This time I said something to them and they acted as if I was speaking a different language offered to give him a bath which I declined because I didn’t want them touching my dog anymore. Well I swore to myself I would never take my dog there again has he hated going there I could tell from his body language. But recently had to drop him off this past week for an emergency out of town. Of course exact same thing again I thought to myself how could this possibly happen 3 times was in a year. I will never under any circumstances take my dog to rob carries, if anyone ask of boarding places I will make sure to steer them clear away from Rob carries. I have ordered my dog at many other places in different states and he has never had a reaction he has a rob carries nor does he have dog feces on him. If I could give a negative star review I would. This place disgusts me and you should be ashamed because obviously I’m not the only one to leave negative reviews.

My story happened a few years ago, so take that for what it’s worth. However, I think it needs to be told. We left my cat Walter with them with instructions to not take him out of the cage or play. I knew he could be a bit rough while playing and thought it best for them just to feed him for a few days while we were in New Mexico. Once we got to the hotel, we received a frantic call saying that Walter was trying to bite and that if someone didn’t pick him up that day they would send him to the pound. So we turned right around and drove another 10 hours back to get my cat. The whole thing was crazy.

Went in to check out thier selection of raw dog food. They did not have the best selection — Pollys on Pat Booker has better. But they had a sale so I bought some. Was looking to buy other things but many items were lacking prices :/​frustrating! The clerk did say she could look up the prices but really? How much for this? Waiting… How much for this? Waiting… Frustrating! Either way bland experience. Once i was home and feeding the dog i noticed why i think the food was on sale; The bag was just shy of 1 month passed the sell by date!!! Really?

Amazing customer service! My cranky and very stressed out kitty had to spend a two week vacation here. The staff treated my pet as if he was there own and was even able to calm my worried mind via email updates when I requested it. Plus, the prices are great!

BEWARE! Rob Cary is not so much a pet resort as a slum. The buildings are old and if you look over the fence you can see how run down the suites are. The front desk staff is friendly enough until they lose your dog’s toys, of course. At that point expect a very unapologetic, «that’s why we don’t guarantee stuff, sometimes it gets lost in the shuffle, but we’ll call you if it turns up.» Not sure how much shuffling takes place; I was under the impression a dog gets taken to the room upon arrival and out to reception for pickup. I expected a courtesy report of «everything was fine blah blah blah», but I guess that is more of a PetSmart thing. The fact that the toys got lost makes me wonder if they gave my dog his medicine like I paid them to, or maybe that got lost as well. I am left with an impression of gross incompetence by this «resort» and do not recommend placing your family pets here.
A silver lining to this experience: I went back to read Unilocal reviews to see how this place has a 4-​star rating and discovered a section under all the posted reviews titled «reviews not currently recommended». Clicking on that reveals all the reviews that aren’t factored into the rating because they don’t Unilocal enough or whatever other logic Unilocal uses to weed them out (the disclaimer insists it isn’t because the business advertises with Unilocal or anything).

Really bad experience! Not safe for your pet!
The experience I had while boarding my pet was really terrible. First of all, the staff are less than friendly. Costumer service is not a «first’ in this establishment. When I called every night to check on my pet, I was placed on hold for long periods of time. By the way, the response was always the same «your pet is doing great»… On the check out date, i was notified that my dog «had been involved in an accident». When i asked the lady how it happened, she got «defensive» saying that she was only reading the notes from the day prior. When I asked her why I was not notified, she said she did not know. When I asked to speak with the manager, she was really rude saying that the only thing she could do was give me an apology. She never even attempted to rectify the issue in any way, shape or form. When I got upset over the incident, she told me that I was being unreasonable. I told her that I expected my pet to be safe in that environment and if an accident did happen, I expected to be notified about it… Even worse, I asked to talk with the owner! The manager called her on the phone but the owner responded that she would call me later which she never did.
In summary, this place is unsafe for your pet and it has extremely poor customer service. Recommend looking elsewhere.
Based on my observations, I don’t believe the owner of this establishment stands behind her services. In my book, she should not be operating a «pet resort» with such a lack of commitment and service.

I was really disappointed in this «pet resort».
My parents were looking for a boarding facility to take their two dogs. I called before we visited to let them know we were interested and to describe their dogs. One is 14 years old and we wanted to make sure they would accept an older dog before we visited. The woman I spoke to and the person I e-​mailed with explained there was no issue with the dog’s age and we could bring them in. They advised us to come in for a tour to check out the facility.
When we got there, the receptionist was really friendly. We explained to her how I’d been in contact with two different people at the facility and that we were interested in boarding my parents dogs. When we told her that the dog was 14 years old, she said they would not accept him because of age. I told her we wouldn’t have wasted our time going there if we had known and that we were in contact with two other individuals at Rob Cary. Eventually she told us that we could bring him in but we would have to bring him in for doggy day care a few times to make sure he’s accepting of the facility and the people. Which was understandable.
We asked for a tour and the receptionist said that all of the staff was too busy to give us a tour at that time. Again, we explained we wouldn’t have come and wasted our time if we didn’t feel we could’ve gotten a tour. She called someone, about ten minutes later someone came and gave us a tour.
Now — the facility is nice. We checked out the «extra-​care» area for the older/​special needs dogs. Then we went into the runs area. Wow, oh, wow. It was absolutely filthy. I looked into some of the dogs runs and there was so much poop, it was disgusting. It was also 5PM and all of the lights were off in both the regular runs and the ones with the TV’s. It was super weird that all the lights were off, because there’s no skylights or extra lights for the dogs.
After we got the tour, the receptionist gave us some paperwork and told us her life story. In which she told me that she’d only been working there since November 2012. I was surprised she was basically making the decisions about boarding an older pet.
Overall, our pre-​boarding experience was awful. There should be RULES that are set in stone and not just from one-​person to another. Also, they shouldn’t claim they will give anyone a tour during their regular business hours. It’s weird that they tried to turn us away when we arrived. I wouldn’t advise using this boarding facility and I won’t ever try to again.

We have only boarded our dog at Rob Cary a few times when we needed somewhere to keep her while traveling in town to visit our family. They have been outstanding each time, and they most recently took care of our dog only a few days after emergency abdominal surgery (we had already scheduled a vacation). The staff was supportive and understanding when we often called to check on our dog, and she was obviously well taken care of and pampered while she was there. She came bounding out as if nothing had ever happened!
We also attended one potty training class a few years back with Tammy that was very informative and made us feel comfortable to ask questions.
At every visit there we’ve given in to purchasing at least one product in the front reception area. Our dog goes crazy for the vanilla rolls, and the staff and owner have guided us to finding toys appropriate for our dog that she hasn’t managed to destroy yet.
Overall we’ve been consistently impressed!

I have been bringing my dog here for 2 years to get groomed. It is definitely NOT close to where I live, but it is worth the drive. They take such good care of Paxton.
A complete groom is $ 26 and there cuts are top notch. The only complaint I can think of is that they used to cut his nails and leave the end jagged. However, I just had to ask them to start filing them and that solved the problem.
They are adamant about making sure that all dogs are up to date on their vaccinations, which is reassuring. I usually drop my dog off around 9am and he is done by 12pm or 1pm.
I have never boarded with them, but they will be my first choice if I ever have to do so. I also can not speak to their obedience classes as we have never had to participate in those either. They have quite a few types of food and treats and super cute pet outfits as well.
It is definitely a great place to get your pet groomed at a very reasonable price.

Training OK
Beware of boarding your pet. On one occasion I left my dogs for almost three weeks and had a bill of over $ 550 which I expected. The owner had the audacity to fine me an extra day because I arrived 10 minutes (not exaggerating) late. She made me feel like the enemy. We continued to use them because we felt like our dogs were in the best care despite the situation.
The next time one of our dogs had a fully dislocated hip when we picked her up. They said they did not notice anything wrong. The vet said it would require a force equivalent to being hit by a car to cause this. Our other dog was very cowed down and has been very intimidated by strangers ever since. The owner of course, denied everything. We have heard similar comments from other former customers.

My family has used Rob Cary for the past 10 or so years. We have had three Shelties in training there and a Cockatiel that has been boarded there.
Their bird room is great! Our bird, Bud, liked the stimulation of being near other birds and people. He was always really happy and didn’t have any nervous symptoms some birds get (like a lot of feather loss, etc.).
I would not take my dogs anywhere else for training! They have free potty training classes that are very insightful for the first-​time puppy owner. Their Puppy Kindergarten classes lets the puppies socialize at the end… which is very important! The instructors are always attentive to the individual even though the class is a group class. One great thing they do is give you a little «graduation certificate» and the end of the class, which also offers suggestions on what further training your dog would excel at– like agility, obedience, or canine good citizen.
The agility classes are PHENOMENAL! I have trained all of my Shelties in agility. Agility helped my dogs come out of their shells and gain more self-​confidence. One of my Shelties has a thyroid condition and doing agility melted the pounds off of her and made her a lot happier in general. We even had success and titled in agility trials! Even though some agility places claim to be cheaper, you pay once every 8 weeks for lessons (6 weeks of class, 2 weeks break) which is a good break-​up of the work for the dogs.
I would definitely recommend this facility for boarding and especially training.

I’ve used Rob Cary’s kennel services and obedience classes. I’m not super impressed with either.
I enrolled my dog in obedience classes when she was 3 years old because she began having behavioral issues. They assured me that she needed to be in a beginner obedience class because she had never been in a formal class despite the fact that I assured them she knew basic commands, «sit, stay, walk on a leash.» So, we wasted $ 110 and 6 weeks worth of classes to teach my dog what she already knew and were left with the same issues we had before the class. It was pretty frustrating.
During this time, I also used the kennel services at Rob Cary. The prices here a bit higher than average but they promise lots of extras like play-​time and special treat time and the like. Overall, I was very happy with this aspect of my business here. My dog always came home happy and well-​fed and basically balanced. No issues with that.
But, I’m still a bit grumpy on that wasted $ 110 and she still barks like a mad woman at the slightest knock at my door, which she also doesn’t mind running out of if left unguarded. So, if you choose Rob Cary for obedience lessons for your pet, put your foot down and make sure you get placed in the correct level course!
