My «stylist» f**ked up my hair and my beard.
I was asked how I comb my hair and she cut it the opposite direction and asked her to just clean up my beard and she took al least two inches off plus gave it one of the most lop-​sided and uneven cuts I had ever seen, a cut so bad I had try even it out and try to save it.
Recommend it? Oh hell no.

In town for a day and needed a good shave and cut!!! Hotel referred me to this Barbershop! Haircut and Razor shave was amazing!!! If you are in San Antonio, please visit this place and see the Beautiful Korean Lady (Michin)…

Payed $ 60 got probably one of the worst cuts ive had in the city. Went in a couple days ago, didnt realize the barber messed up my hair so bad till a couple of hours later. I gave a picture, he scoffed, then said a hard part (which i didnt even ask for) was $ 5 extra, really? I pay $ 60 for a haircut and stuff like that is extra? He faded the sides at a medium fade, and the back of my head at a high fade.
On to the beard fade, clippers really? Not only was it uneven, there were spots he missed had i been paying nore attention i wouldve asked for my money back. Last tine i go to any barbers except a mom an pop.

Got a beard trim for $ 20. This beard trim i received is maybe worth 3 $. Didnt even bring out a real razor for the line up. Not a good job at all. Feel ripped off.

After avoiding this place back when it was called roosters due to the neg reviews, I was still apprehensive about trying this place due to a few more neg reviews. Compared prices with barber’s closer to home like diesel, pricing was about the same, slightly pricier at diesel so decided to give matador a chance since I work downtown and needed my long locks trimmed.
Walked in around 5:30, was told it would be about 30 – 45 min wait. Said ok, and was offered a beverage of water, beer, or a soda. Chose a shiner bock and chilled, took in the places vibe. Really cool spot, they have a pool table, lots of magazines for dudes, tv’s, it’s very dapper inside. Only negative is the ghetto hood rats that congregate along the sidewalk but this is the norm on this street, has been for years.
My stylist was Anna, an older but charming lady. I showed her a pic of how I kinda wanted my hair. As she progressed cutting she would ask me about little details about how I wanted the cut to end up, she also took initiative in suggesting ideas for flow of hair, etc. She really looked at my head of hair and gave me the best haircut she possibly could.
Very detailed, probably the most detailed haircut I’ve ever had in my life. She really seemed to care about how my new do came out which is great. Price is much higher than Rios, super cuts, great clips etc but you don’t get this kind of service their. A free beer and impeccable service.
I definitely will be making an appointment with Anna in the next few months when I need a touch up. Recommended for dudes who don’t want the same hipster haircuts or ghetto fades

This place was awesome. I’m from Houston and we really need a place like this back home. Great business concept, excellent service, and outstanding environment. I felt like a billionaire business tycoon while I was in the chair and for a few days after I left. I’m almost tempted to drive to SA once a week just for a haircut and beard trim.

Went there for a haircut and it was one of the best (if not the best) hair cutting experiences I have had. Anna was simply awesome, she wasn’t too hurried or too slow. I have been to the «fast» places like supercut, mastercuts, etc. where you feel like you are an animal being sheared. On the flip side, I have been to one of those fancy salons, and the lady took 2.5 hours to cut my hair. Anna at Matador just hit the sweet spot in between, I was in and out under an hour, including my 10 minutes to finish my beer.
The quality of work was fantastic, I really like how she styled my hair. I am not very specific about the style, and mostly leave it to the stylist so on most occasions, it is either too long or too short. Didn’t feel like that one bit after my visit here. In fact, I plan to take a picture to share it with other stylists in the future (I don’t live in San Antonio, so wont be able to come here for a haircut often)
Lastly, the shop and vibe they have created is really cool. It mixes the old school charm of a barber shop with new age tech and service. You are welcomed with some ice cold beer and great music.
DEFINITELY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE WANTING A FANTASTIC HAIRCUT EXPERIENCE.

I work and live downtown. I always pass this place but decided to finally stop in to learn more. I was greeted by a female and saw female-​barbers. This place conducts itself as «Mens Grooming» yet, they don’t carry any beard products (beard oils, beard balms, shaving supply) — they don’t even carry good male products like Johnny B. They had very generic product like Redken.
Also the prices are really steep — they don’t offer downtown worker discounts (river rat).

–No beard/​hair products that are worthy.
–High prices
If you want a free beer, come here. Otherwise, keep walking.

My husband needed a hair cut, so this place being in the area and with good reviews seemed like a good place to go. There were only 3 women working there, including one receptionist. One of the women wore a cropped shirt with her gut hanging out, and the other woman that had cut my husbands hair came with a load of attitude. Now I have worked at multiple customer service establishments as well as had to deal with ridiculous customers… I don’t consider myself an annoying customer but who knows after the ladys’ lash out at me. After her meticulously cutting his hair for 45 mins I went over to check. It did not look good. As I was looking at his hair the lady sneered at me and asked if I was inspecting, I said yes and she continued to berate me for being there and that she hasn’t had anyone looking over her shoulder for 40 years and that she hates working with ppl like that. Needless to say I found that to be pretty rude so I told her that I didn’t want my husbands hair to look bad. After a few awkward moments of silence she said «I guess that must have been rude.» Well thanks for that great apology… long story short I left baffled with the professionalism of this barber shop and will not be paying them for poor service and a bad haircut (think mushroom shape).

Excellent place. Took very good care of me, did not rush at all, which is a quality you don’t see at the quick in and out chains. Hot towel, cold beer, neck shave. I’ll be back.

I really enjoy going to this Matador location. I used to go to the barbershop in the Gunther but after having my hair butchered a few too many times there I decided to go to Matador. I had gone to a few of their locations before but this is a great location for people who work or live downtown. Their full service haircut is a great relaxer during a busy day. I have my hair cut by Adela and she does a great job. I would definitely recommend matador over the Gunther. It cost a little bit more but the service you receive is much better. I also forgot to mention that they offer beer or other drinks during your haircut.
The reason they lost a star is because they used to offer a downtown discount (for people who work or live downtown) of $ 5. This had me sold on Matador. They apparently stopped offering it but would offer a discount for «returning customers». I had been there about 5 times so I don’t know why I didn’t get a discount last time. However i think try need to bring back the downtown discount! I have recommended this location to a lot of coworkers based on the discount!
Edit: they’ve lost a star. Prices keep going up likely because the lack of business. I am going back to the Gunther.

I was visiting San Antonio, staying downtown, and needed a head shave. Luckily Matador was just a block from the Hotel Contessa where I was staying, and they were open on Sunday.
I arrived as a walk-​in and was seated right away with Adriana. She gave me wonderful service: steamed, shaved, and pampered with oils and lotions to finish.
She, and this establishment, are terrific!

If you think $ 30 to $ 35 is expensive for a haircut, then don’t go to this place. You need to understand that this is a barber that is true to tradition. You get served a drink and then you get the ultimate haircut including eye brow trimming, a shave (if you want) and your hair meticulously cut to perfection. Refreshing experience. I hate other cheap (but worthless) barber experiences.

Jason, great haircut, razor fade high and tight. Free beer, fast service, friendly staff, hot towel and a free game of pool. I would recommend anyone looking for a haircut to visit Matador’s Men’s Grooming and ask for Jason. He’ll hook you up. While your there get Mario to shine your shoes.

Valerie cuts hair great. I have come here for the past couple times to get a fresh cut and the service is great and people are friendly. I recommend this place if you want a great hair cut and a nice scalp massage.

I endured mediocre service for a $ 35 haircut (including tip) for a few months, and then this…
Called ahead for an appointment and was 4 minutes late. They had my phone #, but I was not called. My spot was given to someone else. «No problem,» I thought. «It’s only 5:34 and the sign on the door says they close at 7:00. Plus, nobody else is waiting.» Nope, I was asked to leave because they were not accepting any other customers for the day, and were closed.
Save your time and $ and find another groomer.

I was visiting San Antonio last week and needed a haircut. I did my research in Unilocal and saw all the great reviews and decided to go there, since it seemed to be in the same vibe as ‘The Gent’s Place’ in Dallas. I was actually hoping that it could actually be as good as, but for a better price.
I probably wasn’t lucky in my timing since there was only one person available and I had to wait a little, but that wouldn’t have been a problem, since I hadn’t been able to give them an exact time as to when I would be able to show up.
After I entered two other gentlemen arrived. I kind of anticipated that my service would get rushed and I was right.
The part that actually really got me frustrated was the fact that they don’t seem to know how to cut wavy to curly hair. You simply can’t cut curls right in the middle just to get the same length everywhere, since this type of hair rarely looks symmetric. The lady that did my haircut seemed oblivious to that, even though I showed her that she had cut right through a few curls (sadly only AFTER she had done it), which now made the haircut look uneven. She simply stated that she had to get the same length everywhere, showing me that she actually didn’t know what she was doing.
I’m sure that people with straight hair will get their money’s worth here, since the person that got a haircut right before me got excellent results, but if you have medium thick wavy to curly hair I’d look for another place to go.

I’ve been here twice. Both times I got a great haircut. I’d recommend this place to those who live or work downtown and tourists. Being downtown it’s really only convenient if you can walk there. Parking tip: street parking at the corner of Commerce and Main is the closet (3 blocks).
Both times I went, service was good. The haircuts great. They offer complimentary beer while you wait and receive a haircut. There’s also a free, very nice, pool table there as well. Also, if you live downtown or work downtown they offer a discount, just show ID.

I’m a girl writing a review for a men’s grooming salon. hehe…
So, my DTLBF (downtown living boyfriend) likes to come here for his hair cuts. He says they give the best hair cuts and you get a beer while you wait. On our recent downtown adventure, lucky me, I get to sit and wait while he gets his hair cut. Lucky me, I get to read some hilariously awesome men’s magazines. Lucky me, I get to have a Shiner Bock beer in a frozen glass while I wait.
I probably would’ve played some solo pool while I waited but some other guy beat me to it. I really like the facility. It’s very old school, parlour type. Lots of chrome and wood every where. I can see why men like coming here. Such a manly place.
Why don’t they serve beer at the salon’s I go to? All we get is Diet Coke and Red Wine. SCHMMMMUH!

A most excellent cut and was nice to be accented with free beer and pool. My wife and I quite enjoyed this.
