Grayze

Tried this restaurant last night with another couple. It had a really nice vibe but SO uncomfortable. Air conditioning not working? In San Antonio? In June? Seriously? When we asked the wait staff about it, they said ‘it’s always like that.’ If you accept reservations through Open Table (which we made!) and then tell your guests that you really don’t look at those reservations, shame on you. The calamari was delightful. The hanger steak with bearnaise sauce has some interesting flavor combinations but the steak was on the tough side.

RECOMMEND:
–So Cal: calamari with shishito chimoy and red chile aioli. Hands down, the best calamari I have had at any restaurant in the city. It’s SO fresh, crispy on the outside, and cooked perfectly on the inside, served with two amazing sauces full of bold flavors on the side. There is absolutely nothing I would change about this dish flavor-​wise, but I was a little disappointed in the portion size. It’s a pretty small plate for $ 11, especially because it’s just so delicious it just hurts to see it all disappear off the plate so fast. We shared between two greedy and hungry people (including myself) and ran out way too fast!
–Kiss My Grits: shrimp with tasso ham in a shrimp butter sauce, grits, and pickled mustard greens. I ordered without the tasso ham and really enjoyed the dish. I am partial because I’m a huge fan of shrimp and grits in general, and it’s executed pretty well here. The seafood is fresh, the texture of grits is perfect, and every component is seasoned well.
AVOID:
–Bird is the Word: pan roasted chicken breast with house made mushroom risotto, sweet corn and english peas. My friend ordered this and had to send it back because the chicken was incredibly dry and particularly bland. The risotto was just average and the whole dish in general was simply lacking. I’ve had a very similar dish with cornish hen before and was absolutely floored by it, so this plate was pretty disappointing.
Other menus items:
–Grayze Burger: A solid burger, but nothing to write home to grandma about. The meat was cooked pretty well, maybe just a tad more dry and less juicy than I prefer, but the aioli adds some complexity to the flavors. Probably one of those burgers that needs a fried egg on top for some moisture.
I really enjoyed the cute outdoor seating in the back and front of the restaurant in addition to the incredible service. I’ve had a great experience with drinks during happy hour, especially because it’s kind of fancy but at the same time has sports playing on the TVs at the bar, so it’s perfect for grabbing a chill beer and watching a game too. I would love to come back just for the spectacular calamari, but unfortunately some of the other dishes have been kind of hit or miss.

Went for dinner, ate at the bar since we didn’t have the fore thought to make a reservation. Really dug the ambiance and the décor, had the Grayze Salad and the Queso Sandwich both delicious and theur Mason Jar Smores was divine. Bar gets a little crowded so if that’s not your thing make sure to make reservations first.

So walked in and I give the place (Décor) 1 star… Staff 0 she says you have a reservation hmmmm. Hostess comes back and then disappears, we go outside lots of seating a waiter says «These tables are just for decoration». HahahahaWhat??? Out! these guys are drinking the Mamosa punch they suk at the first rule, customer services. Voodoo Donuts is not Voodoo Donuts on décor alone or Cover3 a sport bar because they have lots of big screen TVs. Customer service comes first! The food a close 1^st. You can build trend or flare first that does not fill the stomach and keep people coming back for more. Lol a reservation for a portable turned restaurant that’s funny yeah I’ll have a Mamosa hold the orange juice. All I saw was a portable house turned into a restaurant with pallets for décor and fencing, gravel and picnic tables. Think they are catering to a very select group to patronize them but for how long will they come. The people that sit courtside of a ballgame are not real fans of the game they just go there to be seen and to say they have seats. Hated it I’ll come back when its somethings else. Walking across to Shuck Shack looks cool.

We were looking for a low key but different place to enjoy apps and drinks on our monthly date night. A friend suggested we try Grayze, which is a new «comfort food» style restaurant on an up and coming part of Grayson street, across from Shuck Shack. I made reservations at Open Table, and we headed to the restaurant to begin the night.
Upon entering the restaurant, it was a little chaotic and the hostess told us it would still be a 10 minute wait even though we had a reservation. We didn’t mind because we immediately went to the bar. The bartender was insanely busy and didn’t really notice us until 5 – 10 minutes later. Once we finally got our drinks, our table outside was ready.
The outside was really nice, with a covered area where most of the tables were under. Our waiter was really nice and told us how all the food is made from scratch and organic. The menu is small, but we noticed a couple eating the frittes, so we ordered it as well. We ended up having a few more drinks and we weren’t that hungry, especially since the frittes were delicious and filling. We stayed for a couple hours and really enjoyed the atmosphere and the homemade citronella.
My recommendation is to check out the menu before going because the menu is small and you should make sure you are open to trying what they have on the menu. Also, be prepared to wait a few minutes, even if you have a reservation.

Another great edition to Grayson street! Located right across from Shuck Shack, Grayze is a modern twist on the neighborhood diner. Their personal take on iconic diner dishes is a refreshing twist to dishes that you can find anywhere. A quaint remodeled house with warm accents make this a great dining option, including their unique patio located in the back.
I’m not a huge fan of salads for instance but their Grayze Green salad with quinoa and sunflower seeds was delicious! A light and refreshing salad makes it a great way to start your meal.
Some other things that I like about this place is their $ 15 lunch boxes and fun happy hour featuring various discounts on food and drinks. Grayze even offers a military discount!
I’m a huge fan of their Grayze Burger with Freedom Cheese and I think it’s great they make their own break including gluten-​free bread for those who have that allergen.
If you’re a fan of barbacoa you gotta try their Cheeks N Buns (awesome pun seriously) which are barbacoa sliders with cilantro ginger. This establishment is part of the TBA family and I love coming here for a quick yet delicious bite!

Went to Grayze for the first time ever for the Unilocal Salutes the Military CMYE event! I must say, when Tomas organizes an event, he goes BEYOND the ordinary! To honor my late father-​in-​law, who spent 29 years in the USAF, I wanted to participate and give some items to make a care basket for service members serving overseas.
*EDIT* 5−11−16: While I have gone on record in Talk threads about my sheer horror and dread about coming downtown, Grayze is in Government Hill, which is not *quite* downtown, as Tomas kindly noted. And while that area is up and coming, the parking leaves a lot to be desired. Especially since the Shuck Shack is being a pain in the you-​know-​where about its parking. Looks like I’ll avoid SS for a while if they’re going to be *that* uppity about parking. I did park on the street on the same side as Grayze. I was more worried about the traffic than the neighborhood in which these restaurants are located.
I arrived at 5:30, well before the start time, bellied up to the bar and ordered a sweet tea. Not long after, my new friend in Unilocal,Matt arrived. He himself is in the Army (HOOAH! MATT!!!) and we had some pleasant conversation along with our drinks. Tomas arrived and began to assimilate the patio out back. We enjoyed some light apps (the mac and cheese is FANTASTIC!) as well as some Freetail (first time ever, or at least in my recent memory, that a non-​Wisconsin beer crossed my lips). I also enjoyed the Grayze fries which were seasoned with sea salt and some other herbage I couldn’t quite identify.
I did order the Grayze Unilocal special of a burger, fries and margarita. I must say, for the price, the food was AWESOME! A genuine Angus burger, more of those wonderful fries, and a cool margarita and I sat back and enjoyed a nice, albeit windy, evening in Government Hill (I never knew quite where it was located until today). The burger was juicy and flavorful, with just the right amount of seasoning to make it pop on my palate! Again, excellent fries. The margarita, while delicious, was just enough to get me loose enough… not to try to make one of those bracelets that Tomas himself was *just* learning how to do (and then in walks Jai…), but just enough to get me needing to go home. Gino, our server, was polite, spot on with great friendly service, and very helpful and prompt with refills.
I hope that after I left, more Unilocalers showed up. This was a well-​intended and thought out event for us to participate in., And I have a new place for my wife to try. She wanted me to go and experience something new this evening, and Grayze was just right!

Grayze is one of several of the newer hotspots on Grayson. (It’s down a few doors from Bakery Lorraine’s old location.) It’s small and has no parking lot. Prepare to walk. We parked on N. Alamo and had no issues with our short walk. The front patio wasn’t full, so we toyed with the idea of eating outside. Grayze has two adorable patios (one small out front and one large outback) with great lighting and free bug spray. However, it’s San Antonio, so we decided on indoors. It’s décor is super cool, with the wooden palates on the wall behind their large name. I just felt cooler being there.
We arrived at the end of happy hour. Go for happy hour! The appetizers are amazing and several dollars cheaper. We were there on Cinco de Mayo, so I skipped the happy hour drinks and went for $ 5 margaritas. Delicious!
We ate ourselves silly. I recommend going with friends who like to share and ordering lots, because that’s what we did. We had the mac and cheese (divine), the barbacoa sliders (I’d eat them every day if I could), the cauliflower salad (weird, but glad I had it), the Hail Caesar (best Caesar salad I’ve ever had), and Kiss My Grits (I don’t even LIKE Grits and I ate it up). See, we ate like total fatties and it was glorious. Everything was great. I want to go back and try what we didn’t eat this first round.
Their food is super fresh. I didn’t pay attention while scarfing it down, so I’d like to know how much of it is local. It’s just so good.
The only reason I gave 4 stars is noise. It was unbearably noisy at 6:30 on a Thursday. Even our waitress had to lean in to speak to us. The volume didn’t match the laid back vibe the restaurant gave.

Such a cool local bistro and bar!
This place is pretty new, on Grayson across from some other really solid restaurants, like Shuck Shack.
They offer a fairly wide menu of southern comfort food with a local twist.
The décor is kinda old and barn-​looking. It’s interesting, yet clean.
They have a nice outdoor porch area where you can eat or drink. I’d recommend the latter out here– since it gets hot out here, and there’s little shade for much of the patio in the front. But, there’s a little ‘to-​go’ window, where you can get some really solid drinks. The bartender has been listed in all kinds of publications for their deep knowledge of cocktails and booze. Come here to try something new! Their beer selection is great, and getting better.
The staff is great here, and the service is top notch. I really appreciate everything that they do!
Parking can be challenging here, since this is turning out to be a cool place to go eat in SA, so you have to mainly park on the streets.

Grayze has a really great Happy Hour deal that occurs from 3 to 6:30 Monday through Friday.
They have great deals on three of their sliders and fries as well as a Happy Hour salad. In addition to the food items they also have specials on Beer, Wine, Wells and a Cocktail of the Day (the day I went was a Green Goddess, a refreshing mix of cucumber and lime.)
I have yet to see what the actual inside of the building looks like, but I sat outside on the back patio with my dog. (there are two patios! So much space!) They staff here are all super friendly, they kept coming over to my dog and making sure she was doing okay and if she needed water or anything, being really considerate.
At the time that I arrived, there wasn’t any one else on the back Patio, it was about 5:30 and there started to be a crowd picking up a little closer to the dinner time. The kitchen was quick to get my food out to me.
My waitress recommended that I try the Chicken Bahn Mi Slider, and I wanted to try the Brisket, so I got those two and an order of fries. The food came out fairly fast and the quality was top notch. I liked the Brisket, but the Chicken slider was to die for. It was just the perfect balance of salty and savory. The sizes of both sliders, in addition to the fries were just enough to leave me overly full.
I hear that they have a great Brunch buffet on Sundays, and I can’t wait to check it out in the near future! This place is likely to be a favorite.

Cute location on Grayson and friendly service. Overall the food was good.
The Mac, Puro Poppers, and So Cal were good starters but nothing mouth watering.
We also sampled the cheeks n buns sliders, belly buns, and lambshank redemption. The flavoring was there but a little drier than expected. I loved the idea of the lambshank but it was saltier than I would have liked also.
I think this place a lot of potential & may just need a few tweaks to the seasoning. I would probably give this place another shot in a few months.

Awe, man. I wanted to be blown away by this new American hot spot on Grayson, but it just didn’t deliver for me in terms of food or service. With all of the hype around Grayze, I was expecting an all and all pleasant dining experience, but ultimately I came away with a pretty mediocre meal and some very lackluster service.
Things seemed to start off on the right foot when our waitress offered us complimentary regular or sparkling water. Being that my lifelines are a a regular supply of Topochico and San Pellegrino, my heart skipped a beat and I gladly took the latter.
Next, it was time to order. My guests and I decided to share some «grub» as the waiter mentioned that some items on the menu are small plates. We ordered the caulicious which was out of stock. I tried to order the poppers sans candied bacon, but the waitress said they were premade. So after striking out twice, we went with the Ma Frittes (well seasoned fries) and the Mac (standard mac and cheese). Both were decent, but very heavy dishes that had no discernible taste between ingredients.
When it came time to order, I asked the waitress if she could point me in the direction of vegetarian items on the menu. Long story short, she could not. There was a lot of fumbling around and guess-​making, so I told her I would look over the menu if she could just double check with the kitchen. She returned andddd still no dice.
I ordered the only safe option, the grilled cheese. A dish that 9.0 years of vegetarianism has bored me to death of as everyone keeps trying to force it on me like an easter dress on a toddler. As expected, it was just your average bread with cheese all meshed together. Again, no taste between the five different cheeses. The best part about it was the tomato marmalade and grain mustard.
We waited about 40 minutes for our check (interesting as there were only 3 other tables in the restaurant) and on the way out, mutually decided that we were not likely to return.
I want to like you, Grayze! You’re in a cute part of town, grow your own herbs, and have a great patio vibe. But some creativity on the menu, flavor, and a knowledgeable staff will no doubt go a long way.

Wow! Unbelievable tasty food. This place is tucked away off of Grayson street near the Pearl Brewery. Very HIGH QUALITY food at rock bottom prices.
If you like salads, the Grayze Greens salad is highly recommended, and add chicken. If you like fish, order the Fiery Red Head. It is an excellent sandwich that had a spicy/​creamy texture and taste to it.
We will be back. Very cool restaurant with a good vibe. And also DOG FRIENDLY!

I love that Grayze offers a vegetarian option on their lunch special. The server was also super friendly and helpful, which I really appreciated. I got the vegetarian slider with soup and salad. When I went the soup of the day was a tomato bisque that was absolutely amazing. I tried the grilled cheese my friend ordered and loved it. Basically everything there is really good and I will definitely be back.

Get the cauliflower! Seriously, the cauliflower, of all things, is delicious. I’ve also had the calamari which is nice because it comes with other veggies and the Grayze greens salad which was tasty.
It’s a nice but relaxed atmosphere that was full on a Saturday night. I sat at the bar and there were TVs which I greatly appreciate as a new single person to the city often going out solo.

A solid, and well earned, four stars for this new neighbourhood bistro off Broadway.
First and foremost, the service was absolutely spot-​on, which is very impressive for only being a couple weeks old. Our waters never went unfilled, all the staff worked together to make sure any needs were addressed, and everyone was super friendly and genuinely seemed to appreciate our patronage. While the cocktail menu was on point (which makes sense seeing as that was the only thing Arcade could get right), the wine list could probably use a few more options (no zin by the glass) especially given the range of the menu options. The ambiance is that of a creaky old house with the currently trendy shipping pallet décor, resulting in a loud but not uncomfortable dining room. The bar was very tight, not sure I could enjoy more than just a drink there, but people were having full meals so more power to them. There’s outdoor space and large porch, so I can definitely see spring and fall bringing patrons in to enjoy cocktails and snacks in a social al fresco setting.
On to the food … all well executed and packed with complex flavours. The batter on the calamari was perfect, and the assortment of frito veg on top worked surprisingly well. Salads, while very small, were fresh and properly dressed. I enjoyed my bánh mì, but felt the single very thin slice of belly to be far too small, especially as the price point. The sauce made the dish and was savoury with a bit of sweet, while perfectly coating the palate and cutting the fatty pork. Dessert was an interesting take on a s’more, presented in (again, painfully trendy) a mason jar with pulverised bits of graham cracker and an impressively smooth fluff topping that was charred just right. Someone in the kitchen has some impressive blowtorch skills.
Overall, Grayze is a welcome addition to San Antonio’s innovative food scene, showing very strong promise especially so early in its residency; I look forward to more visits in the near future.

Drove by here with my boyfriend and randomly walked in but was pleasantly surprised, definitely glad we tried it out.
Interior design of Grayze made the atmosphere feel very homey and friendly, had lots of wooden furniture and natural lighting.
Waiters and waitresses were accommodating and attentive, checking in on us and was friendly.
We started off with a few appetizers and shared a burger, surprisingly enough it actually filled us.
The Mac– A typical Mac and cheese entrée but I just wasn’t a fan. It was ordinary in taste and I will be ordering the poppers instead next time.
Grayze Burger (with added bacon and fried egg) — Was the best item we ordered. Added bacon and fried egg was such a good call because the bacon literalism felt like it melted in my mouth.
So Cal– the calamari was so flavorful, my boyfriend and i ate it all in just two minutes. It came with two sauces, a saffron aioli (which was yellow and creamy) and a green vinaigrette which was also delicious.
For drinks I ordered The Walrus and Me– a sweet & tangy but very refreshing cocktail for $ 9
In all, everything was decently priced and left me satisfied!

I loved the interior of Grayze! Lots of wood finishes which gives it a warm, cozy atmosphere. The food was delicious. I had a little taste of everything: the poblano poppers, the grilled cheese, the lamb shank with polenta, the shrimp and grits, the meatloaf, the housemade fries with sriracha & the calamari with the chamoy dipping sauce (we were with a big party.) The food was great, my favorite (s) by far were the shrimp and grits & fries with housemade sriracha & the calamari with chamoy sauce. I am a huge sriracha fan… And the one they made here was fabulous. And the chamoy sauce, I’m obsessed with that too. The cocktails were fabulous. I think I found my new martini Tuesday spot!

I really liked the atmosphere at Grazye. I was greeted by a hostess and was quickly seated. The hostess was very knowledgeable about the drinks and menu. Note that their special drinks change every few days. The one I have pictures is called the blood moon.
Parking is extremely limited so I had to park on a side street.
I like the décor and music. This establish is small and I would suggest calling in a reservation for Saturday or Friday night. Right now can walk in, but I expect this will change in the coming days.
The waiters were very friendly and I had multiple waiters ask me if I needed anything.
I ordered the Mac, calamari, and the 50÷50÷50 plate.
The Mac was delicious and creamy. The calamari was fantastic.
The 50÷50÷50 meatloaf was decent, but I’ll be back to try burgers.
Overall I had a great time and I will be back for more!

I have a habit of judging a restaurant based on how they turn out a simple and standard dish, in my case I review french fries (yes, I am an addict). The fries were perfect, crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside with a conglomerate of spices that added up to a perfect appetizer.
The other dishes did not disappoint, everything from the fresh-​from-​market salad options to the creamy shrimp & grits over spinach to the mango/​lime crème dessert in a jelly jar. I can’t wait to see the cocktail list that comes out of this kitchen, I’m sure it will be just as inventive.
I got a chance to view the outside area that is dog friendly and covered by a pavilion — it’ll be perfect for evenings out with friends (with and without paws). So happy this restaurant is another (less expensive to boot!) option within a small circle outside The Pearl.
