Fresh homemade food. Tortillas are great! Kids loved the pancakes. Well worth the visit! Highly recommend this place for breakfast.

Tried to go here this morning, based on the rave reviews here. It appears to be closed! We couldn’t find it, so I called. Message from AT&T says this business is gone. Sorry we missed some good food.

This was a suggestion for breakfast from the front desk of our hotel. Being close by we decided to try it. Nothing short of wonderful! I like to experience ethnicities through their language, culture, and food. This food is truly Tex-​Mex! I am no expert, but I am throwing in my few cents to vote for Diony’s! Great food, Great selection, Great service, Great atmosphere, GREAT PRICES!!! This is one of the must stops when in downtown San Antonio!

Small, simple, and cheap… Dirt cheap. diner lay out nothing special, fast service and breakfast tacos. If you are looking for interesting ingredients and an artisan touch, this is not the place, they keep it simple Tex-​Mex, but the service is fast, even with only one waitress working.
Easy fix to the, «Where should we eat at 1pm on Sunday,» problem.

Had the Huevos Rancheros with carne guisada # 4 (I believe) and of course was not disappointed. I rate my resturants on weather I’ll go back or not, and this place will always see us when we’re in S.A. Parking is tricky and located right before you get to Dionys, looking forward to lunch here in the near future, ENJOY!

I read the reviews on this site and suggested to family lets try it out. It started out as 4 of us and once we arrived we saw menu and prices and called 6 more family members and our party became 10. There was not a single person disappointed everyone was parting me on the back for what I had found.
We say get past the ambiance and give it a try.

I was in San Antonio for a conference and was staying at a hotel a few blocks away. I looked on Unilocal for a small tex-​mex diner and found this one. I was the only non-​local there and it definitely doesn’t cater to tourists — looks a lot like the inside of my grandma’s house. But the food was great (taco, chalupa, enchilada, rice and beans for $ 5) and everyone including patrons were SO NICE. Beans may be the best I’ve ever had, with a hint of bacon. Go for great inexpensive food and don’t get caught up in the appearance. It was clean and the food was GREAT!

You know, I told myself I’d visit a couple more times, see how Diony’s was after a few days… but I am way too excited to review this place.
A five-​minute walk from my hotel, I’m kicking myself for never having visited here before. The storefront is small, so could probably be easily missed if you were driving here. The inside is nice — and makes it pronounced that the owners are Columbian, and love old John Wayne movies.
But you don’t go to a restaurant for the old movie posters, you go for the food.
And go back for the food.
And go back for the food.
Because the food is incredible. You can’t beat the prices — I paid 4.95 for huevos rancheros, that came with bacon, beans, potatoes, and tortillas. And the tortillas were amazing — handmade, still hot — and the eggs were cooked perfectly. They have daily deals for breakfast, which I am definitely going to try. Got an orange juice, which ended up being pricey [total bill was 7.75], so I am just going to stick to water or coffee tomorrow. [I am looking forward to tomorrow’s breakfast already.]
The people working seemed to know most everyone who came through the door — it really doesn’t surprise me that they have a loyal following. I still can’t believe I hadn’t come here yet, and I can’t see a future trip to San Antonio without regular visits to Diony’s.

Decent food, great value. We were looking for a good place for mexican or tex-​mex breakfast that was good, and not too expensive, and came upon this place on Unilocal.Awesome choice. Defintely the opposite of touristy, but the food and prices were worthe the visit. Portions were huge, and I couldn’t finish my plate AND we ended up skipping lunch because we were so stuffed. We got the huevos rancheros with carne guisada and carne asada.
The carne asada was flavorful but maybe a little tough. The guisada was a really small serving, but tender and flavorful. Maybe a little more cumin than I would have liked, but then again, I’m not a fan of cumin. The refried beans and potatos were pretty standard, although the potatoes were very tasty with the red and green salsas. Eggs were cooked well.
Orange juice was literally out of a 12 oz Tropicana bottle, but the lemonade seemed fresh – there was pulp, at least.
All together, less than 15 dollars including tip for 2 huge plates of pretty good Mexican breakfast, and juice. Not bad.

Came here by accident during lunch downtown one day– had looked up another restaurant on Unilocal with the same address but never found it so settled in to see what was in store for us here.
Diner-​style mexican food was the answer. Sounds odd, but the restaurant looks like a diner inside– complete with newspapers out and personal coffee cups for the regulars. Service was slow despite the fact that we were there after the lunch rush. Felt awkward so we ordered to go.
Pricing was super low, which I rarely see down town but appreciate. Both my coworker and I ordered the lady’s lunch special– two cheese enchiladas, a puffy taco, rice, beans, and tortillas, for just over $ 5 each. Like I said, super low pricing right? Low prices plus a virtually vacant restaurant made me worried though.
Luckily we unwrapped our food back at the office and I was thrilled to discover that the enchiladas were legitimately delicious– down home style, like your grandma made them, in a delicious sauce with extra cheese, lard-​laden beans that somehow felt light and didn’t make you feel disgusting after eating them (unlike many restaurants here in SA!), and soft, fresh tortillas! Only downside was the rice, which I found to be overcooked and underseasoned, but I’m open to going again and seeing if it’s any better.

Chips were great but salsa wasn’t so great. Place needs to be updated but I guess they want it to look like grandmas dining place, who knows, I was handed both a breakfast and lunch menu, assuming breakfast was still open at noon I picked out thier Friday special so when our waitress took our order she didn’t clearly state why I couldn’t order from the breakfast menu anymore so I ordered #11 which has a enchilada, crispy taco, rice n beans and chicken w tortillas. The enchilada wasn’t good because the tortilla tasted not cooked, beans tasted too watery n bland and rice tasted old and lacking moisture. Plate has fresh avocado slices which I enjoyed along with the crispy taco. I think the meat, iceberg lettuce and cheese was great! Other than that I think I’d have to come for breakfast instead of lunch. Place is tucked away by the Alameda theatre and looks just as old so I would update the décor to attract more of the business crowd in that area competing with the taco garage and Alamo café.

Columbian… Mexican…who cares. The food here was awesome. You might pass it by thinking its a dive but don’t miss this place. Some of the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. The beans were fantastic and had a great flavor to them.
My breakfast consisted of huevos rancheros with beans and potatoes and bacon. With a side chorizo and egg taco. Great food, I’ll be back here again next time I’m in town.
Interior is very clean and the décor is a little dated. But who cares, I’m not eating the wall decorations.

Had lunch here during my Jury Duty stint. Quick, fast, simple, easy, delicious. It’s an authentic place with a true Hispanic downtown vibe. Not fancy or trendy, but real. The kind of place you walk by, hesitant to consider because of how it looks, but when you step in, it’s a nice quick lunch.

It seems that this place is really Colombian, not Mexican food!
I had the lunch special, chicken mole with rice, beans, sweet tea, and tortillas.
The beans were outta sight! They had a bacon flavor to them, and were warm and just the right consistency.
The chips and salsa both seemed to be handmade. The salsa, was nothing great. A red sauce with mild heat.
I wasn’t too wild about the chicken mole. There wasn’t much meat on the bones of the chicken, and the mole was nothing to write home about.
I really enjoyed the tortillas, as they were also handmade, and were flaky and delicious!
The place had dated décor, the last time they changed the decorations was when the Spurs were in the championship in 2008.
Overall, the place was clean, the service was friendly. I’ll be back when I’m downtown, especially for breakfast, as it seems that they have some of the best breakfast in town!

Definitely off the beaten path. Found it through Unilocal and, frankly, when we turned the corner and saw the storefront I thought for sure we had made a mistake.
Otherwise good friendly service. Colombian flags everywhere serving Mexican food :)
Obviously a local neighborhood spot with a few tourists (like myself) mixed in. Good food. Good prices. Worth a breakfast meal on your way to the mercado.

Redemption!
After our tragically predictable visit to «Café Olé» not 24 hours prior to our stop at Diony’s, I decided to fire up Unilocal!and use it as I have previously.
Since Diony’s is on Flores street, several blocks off the hustle and bustle of tourist centric part of San Antonio, it probably rarely gets accidental tourist pedestrian traffic; and the hour I spent there validated this hypothesis.
Our family of four were treated to a wonderful down-​home, very appropriately priced diner that served humongous portion sizes of everything we tried. My 8 year old son looked at his $ 3.95 plate of 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of sausage and said, with delight: «this looks like an adult sized plate!» Correct-​o boy!
I had the fantastic eggs, potatoes and carne asada; not imagining just how much food I was to get (for a whopping $ 5.75 mind you) I ordered a chorizo and egg breakfast taco (for $ 1.15, thank you very much) and had to stuff it all in.
Service was swift, friendly and accomodating. This is a place every neighborhood needs. Was great to see the ‘changing of the menu’ as sandwhich board outside swapped to lunch menu. In addition, a high-​tech, piece of pink paper with «Posole» written on it in sharpie was put up for the lunch crowd. That’s some marketing folks!
All told, breakfast, drinks, extras, put entire bill right at $ 30. Glad to know places like this still exist.
Place is on the divey side, but that’s the appeal; nothing too fancy, great food all around. If you are turned off by that, then you need to give «Café Olé» a try instead and tell me how that goes. :-)

Couldn’t have asked for a more amazing dining experience… Diony’s is what I, a Jersey boy, would call San Antonio’s version of your favorite local hole-​in-​the-​wall diner. The patrons are mostly local retiree’s enjoying the food and sun-​splashed dining area, the table clothes don’t match each other, and kitchen fryer smells permeate throughout the restaurant.
This place has incredible charm, is run by amazingly friendly people, and has a wide variety of local-​favorite dishes for insanely low prices. By insane I mean a group of my friends came here and ordered huge breakfasts for $ 37… and this is for seven people and that included our over 20% tip!!! I’d hate to ruin the feel of this place by inviting droves of tourists but I can not believe this isn’t a «off-​the-​beaten-​path» special note in every tour guide for San Antonio. The owner deserves the business… the food is excellent.
A true gem.

This place is NOT a tourist place where you will find a $ 10 breakfast plate. It is a down-​home, very San Antonio Mexican restaurant. If you’re from out of town and you really want to taste SA, this is it.
$ 5 will get you all the breakfast you can eat. So many tacos to choose from it is hard to narrow it down to one. The food was fresh and flavorful.
While it is a little divey, it is extremely clean inside.

There’s nothing I hate more than breakfast in a faux-​fancy hotel restaurant, where an omelet costs $ 16, all in an attempt to entice you into settling for the buffet at just a few dollars more.
If that sounds familiar, Diony’s Sunset Restaurant may be the place for you – a divey, Tex-​Mex diner decorated with family trinkets, eye-​poppingly low prices (i.e. $ 3.99 for two eggs, two pancakes, bacon, and coffee) and really friendly service.
Don’t expect a luxury breakfast for those prices – the chilaquiles were actually what looked like crushed Tostitos mixed with scrambled eggs, rather than saucy, fresh-​fried tortilla wedges topped with a fried egg, as I’ve come to expect as the norm. But remember – you’re paying for this with one-​dollar bills.
The beans and rice are your typical muddy refried and Spanish-​style, respectively – it’s the homemade tortillas that steal the show. These are the true stars of Diony’s – so don’t order anything that doesn’t have them on the side. These corn tortillas, freshly hand slapped, bready and warm, really hit the spot. Why they don’t feature in the chilaquiles is a mystery.
So go to Diony’s for local charm, and the old-​West-​style simplicity that reigned in towns like this before luxury hotels came in with their restaurants of linen napkins and pink-​and-​turquoise-​throw-​pillow booths. Like me, you may find this storefront block to be a shining example of run-​down city charm, with painted tin awnings and western-​style facades – a step back to simpler times. Fresh tortillas waiting inside.
