Small World Tree specializes in aesthetic and structural pruning; care of Oaks and all trees; view creation/​restoration; tree removal; lot clearing and stump grinding primarily in Marin County, but also in San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma. We are based in San Anselmo and service Sausalito, Mill Valley, Kentfield, Greenbrae, Fairfax and all other towns in Marin.

History

Established in 1998.

James Cairnes and Natalie Carey combined forces to form Small World Tree in San Rafael after working together in the aftermath of Hurricane Fran in North Carolina. Jim came to Cal. in 1997 after working in trees in New York, NC, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and England.

As of January 3, 2003 and every year since, Small World Tree (also known as World Tree Service) has earned and maintained the prestigious Diamond Certified® award which is only is presented only to tree services and other local service companies that rate «highest in quality» in a detailed customer satisfaction study of their customers.

Each qualifying business must also pass a license, insurance, complaint status, legal and credit rating (for contractors). To maintain Diamond Certification, American Ratings Corporation conducts ongoing customer satisfaction surveys and checks credentials on a regular basis.

James (Jim) obtained the Diploma of Arboriculture in the UK and also holds the ISA certification in the US. Jim received an award for aerial rescue in the NY State ISA championship. Natalie focuses most on the administrative side as well as estimating. They both share a love of nature which shows in their work.

I have known and worked with Jim Cairnes of Small World for many years. What I appreciate about him is his care for any wildlife that might be using a tree that needs to be cut or pruned. Jim also donates a lot of volunteer time to help WildCare and the Hungry Owl Project reunite hawks and owls that have fallen from their nest, or where a nest was destroyed. For that alone, he is the best you can get. Too many people decide to prune or cut trees in the spring, which is the worst possible time for wildlife. That spring cleaning mentality sets in, but for the trees pruning is best done in winter when they are dormant. Jim has the compassion and knowledge to minimize harm to wildlife while doing his job.

We have used Small World Tree on numerous occasions over the years. We recently had a huge branch from our willow fall in the middle of the night. We were concerned for the safety of others and the integrity of the tree. It took out 3 other trees. I called at 8:00 am and they were here by 8:30. Natalie has always been very professional. Their crew is amazing. Very conscientious and cleaned everything up when they left. I recommend them to everyone who asks about tree service.

Having used Small World Tree Company within the last year and being happy with the work done, I emailed them 10 days ago for some additional services. Here it is 10 days later and except for a follow up phone call call I made and actually spoke to Natalie, I have heard nothing from them about coming out to look at my project. I was promised they would be out within days to look at the project. I have been forced to call a different company and have signed a contract in excess of 4K. I guess that my project is not important to them it must be too «SMALL».

Worst professionalism and experience with this company. Twice a NO SHOW at scheduled estimate appointments while I was waiting. Then they show up on a Saturday knocking on my door. I was putting my sick 1 yr old to sleep so I tried not to answer b/​c she was almost asleep. The knocking continued for a long time so the nap was hopeless. This company does not have respect or consideration for other people’s time.

I’ve used Small World Tree Company on numerous occasions. The first time I worked with Jim, the owner of Small World, was several years ago after learning that the City of Belvedere had used his company for some of their own tree work. Small World removed two large trees for me and they continue to conduct my annual pruning work. Most recently Small World did a superb job of artfully windowing our neighbor’s two large oak trees (Jim has a good eye for this sort of thing). On another recent project we asked Jim to perform follow-​up work on roots that required hours of tedious hand digging on an awkward hillside, under a neighbor’s garage! The job was a royal pain. Jim and his workers did the work quickly and thoroughly. He and Natalie (Jim’s excellent assistant and office manager) went over and beyond by independently communicating and coordinating with the various parties working on that construction site, and all the while managing to keep the peace in a delicate situation. Bravo! To top off my review, I’d be surprised if you can find better prices anywhere in Marin.
Bottom line: Great service, great prices.

I called Small World and Jim came out and gave me an estimate for trimming one tree and removing another. He was prompt and professional. They came out and did the work, trimming the tree to open our view and shape it to look better. They removed the second tree, and removed all the debris. It looks great! I would highly recommend them, and will be calling again when the trees need more work.

The service was professional and the workers introduced themselves and were friendly. They did exactly what I wanted them to do, listening to my every request. The cedar tree was over my roof, clogging my drains and they did a great job! At the end of the day, they used the blower and I couldn’t tell they had been here, except my yard looks beautiful. I called Small World Tree company to do some work after reading reviews on Unilocal.Small World Tree crew did a fantastic job trimming trees to improve my view (of the Bay), reducing a clump of Bays, pruning and separating two trees, and removing a small tree. Everyone worked really hard, was polite and accommodating. I highly recommend them and will be calling Jim and Natalie again.

My neighbors had a tree cut down by Small World and in the process a cut limb landed on my fence and broke a board. After a couple of unreturned phone messages I reached them. They said they didn’t do it and had not seen any damage on the day they were out here. I explained that the broken board was lying behind my fence where it would not be easily visible and the limb was still lying on top of it. Also that it was the only oak tree in the area and that I discovered it the day after they were out here hacking up the neighbor’s tree. I explained to them that all that is needed to repair the fence is a new board to replace the broken one… I even told them the type of wood and the dimensions. Yes, it’s a simple fix for someone with a saw and a vehicle that will accommodate the board. They said that they would come look at it but never did. Several weeks later I spoke with them again. Again they denied causing the damage but said they would come look at it. They blew me off again. This was quite a while ago now.
In my mind, this is unprofessional and truly bad business practice. A good tree service should be willing to take responsibility for any collateral damage they cause. I do not want to see them in my neighborhood in the future.

We used Small World recently to trim two large trees and remove a smaller one. I spoke with three tree services before selecting Jim. I appreciated Jim’s focus on preserving healthy trees rather than working to justify their removal. His bid was competitive and the work was done promptly and with professionalism. I’ll use Small World again.

a locust that toppled a fence. the workers did a great job much of which took
place during a cloudburst. they cleaned up everything and more.

We have used Small World Tree Company for more than three years to assist with routine trimming and safety pruning tress on the 7 acre Marin Humane Society campus in Novato.
Last night’s storm was remarkable and the winds toppled a 50′ tree which blocked all vehicle access to the rear of the property. Minutes after my very early Sunday morning call to Small world, they returned my call and offer to come out. Our roadway is being cleared as I type. Great Work!
