Top Alterations

This is the WORST alterations place in Salt Lake City. Took a dress to be altered, not only she didn’t do it right but she provided the poorest customer service one can receive. She was beyond rude (on top of being overpriced), screaming, speaking in her native language while upset (swearing?) and throwing the clothes on the counter. Save yourself some time, money and a bad time. DONT GO THERE!!!
(Plus she makes you pay in advance so there isn’t much you can do when you pick up your clothes and realize they were not done properly).

Quick service, took in some expensive jeans for repair, good work.

So i had a great coat that I bought made of the same material as scuba gear. Its a designer parka and weighs about 20lbs. Its truly that heavy. I sold the coat on ebay and the guy that bought it tried to flip it for a profit, when he couldnt sell it. He took a hammer to the zipper and ripped the bottom of the zipper then returned it claiming it was damaged. I was devastated. Now I had this expensive parka with no way to fix it.
I then remembered this tailor shop under Social Hall that I always walked by to work. I stopped by and asked if she could cut it off and redo the zipper. She said she could but it would be really difficult. I was expecting to be charged $ 60 plus for the damage but she said only $ 40. I happily paid and left.
When I came back she told me how the coat was so heavy and thick that it broke 3 needles and didnt fit under the machine. She did the best she could with it but was worried i wouldnt be happy. I looked at it and its not the best stitching but it looked MUCH better then before and it worked! I was thrilled. This was not an easy task and the length and weight of the coat made it that more difficult. I tipped her $ 10 and was pleasantly surprised.
I dropped off a suit to have fixed after and I mean fixed. Total redo of the pants and the jacket, even bringing in the shoulders. Which is difficult to do. I figure if she can fix that coat she can fix anything!

I have used Top Alterations three time over the past three years. The service was great the first time, but it has soured with each visit since. On the most recent use of their services I had two pair of pants cuffed. They were too long by exactly the width of the cuff. I returned and spoke with a female I believe is the proprietor (she has been there the last 2 visits). She got very defensive and asked how she messed up. When I told her they were too long by exactly the width of the cuff she suggested I pay half of the original price to have them fixed. When I asked why I would pay again she stated because I marked them incorrectly. She got very defensive and rude and finally agreed to have them done next Wednesday. She didn’t want to give me a claim check or fill out a slip with my name or anything about what needed to be done — she threw the pants onto a pile of clothes and attached a post it note with a pin that only said «1 ¼».
With that I asked for the pants back and left. I didn’t get the impression she was going to do a thing besides lose the pants. She was visibly angry. There was a piece of paper with information about a change in locations on the table — I didn’t get a chance to read it.
I wouldn’t recommend this establish.

Took five pairs of pants, two slacks and three denim, in to be hemmed (simple). The slacks turned out fine, but two of the denim pants don’t even appear to have been touched (still way too long). I was in a rush to pick the pants up and so didn’t have the time to try them all on before leaving the store. Perhaps this is why they request prepay. The owner is cordial enough, but I won’t be returning.

After he asked me to do my own stitching of a garment to tack it in place and then I didn’t do it right, he commented to me on how «American» women do not understand or sew as well as «Chinese» women. Since when do I go to a tailor to sew my own clothes, or have racist stereotypes thrown at me?

I swore I had written a review on this place before… because I have had a good experience with them once in the past. But today ended my relationship.
I had him alter a bridesmaid dress for me. I came to get it and while he did what he said he was going to, there was further altering that I wanted done. I made it very clear that he had not done anything wrong but that I wanted to hire him for further services.
After a little back and forth and a promise of a next Tuesday completion date, he cut a piece of thread and handed it to my friend and told us to go behind the curtain and sew it up ourselves. No needle, just thread. We asked for a needle and assumed he just wanted a first stitch in the spot I wanted fixed.
No. He took the dress and said, «you did this job, not me. Do not complain to me again».
I again said that he didn’t do anything wrong, that I wasn’t complaining, that I was happy to pay him for whatever it was he was doing to my dress as I stood there staring at him. He laughed, added another stitch by hand and handed me my dress.
I still have no idea what happened.

Got my suit jacket and pants taken in. total cost $ 36. Fit is great now. He even had my shirt pressed for no charge. Friendly man that runs the business. Adorable really.

Thank goodness for this dedicated small businessman. I was in Utah for a weekend wedding and realized I’d grabbed the wrong sport coat. I found myself in SLC on Friday evening with a fresh-​off-​the-​rack (internet purchased) sport coat that needed about 2 inches taken off the sleeve, and some tightening up in the back.
PANIC! I called a few spots, nobody open, or they could get me something by Monday/​Tuesday. Not helpful. then I found my way to this shop and was greeted on the phone by a sweet man who told me to stop on by. It was already past the posted closing hour of his shop, and I’m assuming he was getting ready to leave for the week. I raced over there and he measured me up, told me he’d have it ready by the morning.
I arrived Sat morning and he had only come in to take care of my jacket. It fit like a glove, and the price was incredibly reasonable (about $ 20). I wish I could find somebody like this in San Francisco!
Highly recommend.

I have used Top Alterations for two alterations. Dane (owner) does great work and delivers when he promises. There is parking on the West side of the building making it very convenient. Very reasonable prices too.

I am a tiny person. As such, the usual «adult» clothes are not made for me. This becomes a big problem when I am required to wear something at work, and the XS option is… a tent.
Enter Top Alterations! This is a one man shop at the bottom of a building full of offices? Apartments? Who knows what else… and the one man is a sweet Korean guy who does quality alterations on the cheap. Okay, compared to other places where the competition for quality alterations is steep, maybe not so cheap. But this is what I paid:
Simple jeans hem (no preserving of the old hem): $ 12
Taking in a dress with a lining: $ 20
Basically taking apart a coat and putting it back together again (shorten sleeves, shorten length, take in from the sides, make the arm-​holes smaller): $ 36
He says that you can park in the delivery parking on the west side of the building. The first time I parked in the parking structure and had to get a token from the shop to get out.
Also, you can get a 10% discount if have a friend who’s been there and has a referral card. Or, if you have a really big first order, (as I did,) then he’ll «give» you one to «give» back to him.

Sewing machines did not exist in our house growing up, so for me they may as well be a hydraulic concrete block machine or an alien spacecraft, because I am not going to know how to operate it. This is why I am utterly dependent on tailors if I want to wear clothes that actually fit.
At first I went to Best Alterations because they were, apparently, the best. Not the case (see previous review). While I don’t know how to sew, I do know how to do basic math. And a rip-​off is a rip-​off. So I meadered into Top Alterations, not knowing I was about to enter the most awesome alterations shop ever.
There are three reasons why this place rocks:
#1 They are affordable. Especially compared to their competitors in the area.
#2 They do a great job. I asked for a 2-​day job, but when the owner heard I needed the pants for a job interview, he offered to get it done the next day, saying: «I want you to look beautiful!». When I went in to try on the pants, they were perfectly hemmed and pressed.
#3 The owner is sweet as pie. He likes to get to know his customers, and when I left with my pants, he said, «Call me if you pass your interview!»
At this point I am just looking for things to get altered just so I can go back to this place.
NOTE: I’ve parked twice in the delivery lot next to the building (because the parking lot is closed) and never had a problem.
