The Curryer

Order: ½ basil chicken and ½ chicken tikka with rice and naan for $ 8. Basil chicken was flavorful, mildly spicey, with moist chicken — the best part of the dish. The chicken tikka on the other hand had burnt pieces of dry chicken that wasn’t as appetizing. Naan was also good with the exception of the burnt end (I couldn’t find any pieces that weren’t burnt on one end). The rice was a bit undercooked. Not the best Indian food, but not bad from the food cart. Unlike other reviews, I had more than enough rice.

Good simple Indian food at a great price. Until now you had to go to a sit down place for decent Indian fare, not any more. This is quick, affordable and tastes great. Having read the owner’s bio, i sincerely hope they succeed and why not when the food is good. Been there multiple times and will return. I would like to request the owner to try out some southern Indian dishes like the savory crepes.

First of all, the food is delicious — go with the tikka masala or, on Tuesdays, usually, the Jalfrezi (sinus-​clearing spice, but perfect, once your mouth adjusts). Great portions that includes a hunk of lightly charred naan. Hits the spot now that old bastard winter has suddenly arrived.
Anyhow, how cool are the dudes that run this cart? I showed up last Tuesday about 2:05ish (they close at 2) and, sure enough, the cart’s windows were closed. Done for the day — or so it seemed. At the same time, two other lads had also walked up and, seeing our famished faces, they popped the cart open again and fired each of us up a container of goodness and sent us on our merry way. Great customer-​friendly service right there. Thank you, boys, thank you.

I was planning on eating the food later, but took one bit while driving and pulled over, with my foot on the brake, for 5 minutes and DEVOURED every last morsel of this food, while cursing with a look of disbelief. The food was amazing. It is addicting and I want to come back tomorrow!
Best Indian food I’ve had, and it has raised the bar for Indian cuisine for me. Try them out today, and bring your friends!

When he says the curry is spicy, HE MEANS IT! WOW, that Jalfrezi Curry was spicy-​spicy-​spicy, but boy was it good! The flavor was incredible. Only downfall, the chicken was a little overcooked, but not dry. The naan and basmati rice were perfectly fluffy and delicious. The naan did have a little burned edge, but not a big deal. I’d probably order a mild curry next time though since both my mouth and stomach are on fire. Also, the price is incredible. $ 7 for my curry, rice, and a huge piece of naan bread. I was only able to eat half of it so now my husband gets to try some too when I get home from work! This is a little food cart right outside of the big ol’ Wells Fargo building. He’s pretty much always there and he is freaky fast (Yes, even faster than Jimmy John’s). Also, can I say how incredibly friendly he was? We literally talked about the gorgeous weather, he helped me get my food, and then thanked me for coming by. Nice guy, tasty food, great price. I’ll be back.

This place is GREAT.
The Curryer was recommended by coworkers when I first started, and I’ve been eating them weekly or more since. The rice is good (all of the rice) and the main dishes are fast and fantastic.
I’ve tried a handful of other curry places in SLC, like Curry In A Hurry (yuk), and have been extremely disappointed. The only place that compares is Kathmandu, but it’s still a bit less so, and too far to get to from downtown for lunch. I try to never, ever miss them on Tuesday for their Jalfrezi. I’ve been lobbying for it to join the every day menu.
If you ever find yourself on the corner of Main and Broadway mid-​day, grab a box of curry from Dustin, the dwarven-​looking owner, or any else of their great staff. As long as they make curry and I live in Utah I’ll be eating their food. Thanks for being great, and summoning my mouth to the fiery curry crucible I crave so much.

This is one of my favorite lunch spots downtown. For about $ 8 you can get a flavorful to-​go curry with rice and a piece of naan. I usually get tikka masala, but the vindaloo is also awesome. The portion is generous, and if you can catch the owner there you’re in for a treat– he’s super interesting.

I don’t know of anywhere else you can get curry off a cart on the streets of SLC. This place is better than most curry restaurants too. I always order whatever they have that’s vegetarian and I have always been pleased with at least 2 selections. They always have fresh hot naan too. I highly recommend this kart!

LOVE The Curryer. I am so so so glad they park near my work downtown so many weekdays.
Let’s start with the fact that I’m half Pakistani — I KNOW Indian food. This place is authentic.
It’s a tiny little silver cart usually parked outside of the Wells Fargo building (just for people who don’t know — I couldn’t find it the first time I wanted to go).
The 4 options of curry choices each day are usually all pretty different from one another which is nice (there will be a chicken, a vegetarian, etc.). If it says hot, it means it … which I LOVE. I downed three glasses of water with my last Coconut Chicken Curry but hey, that’s how I like it. They always have less spicy options too. The curry is so full of flavor, the rice is cooked well and the naan is a big portion and delicious!
It is great food, from great people, for a great price. Everybody needs to try this place.
PLEASE don’t move your cart away from downtown! I would be so sad.

Definitely some good curry and rice! There are only 4 selections of curry, 2 in the mild category and 2 in the hot. Each order rolls out a plate of rice and some chicken in your curry (if you ordered it). Oh — and don’t forget the bread (SUPER legit goodness)!
My only complaint is the portion. for $ 8, at least get a whole scoop of curry per my half and half order! :(Other than that, I can definitely see myself coming back again! Thanks for catering to my curry needs, Curryer!

Incredible prices and Awesome prices. I always see Indians eating there so you know they’re doing something right! Plus, the owner is always fun to chat with.

One of my favorite lunch time places, it’s quick, the staff is rad, and the food is fantastic and affordable. Big portions too.

Makes my tummy happy, butter potatoe curry was great, Naan was delightful. Unexpected quality. Good job keep it up!

I like this place and generally eat here once a week. The butter chicken and coconut korma are my favorites. The reason for only three stars is the amount of rice they give you is very small. The amount of sauce is great but I never have enough rice to absorb all the sauce. This is the cheapest part of the meal and I feel they could better manage the proportions of rice. The spice level can also be inconsistent. I have had times where I almost couldn’t eat the meal because of how spicy the it was.
That being said I really do like the food. The naan is great and the food. If they changed a few small things I would increase my rate to 4 – 5 stars.

Saw this little food cart parked out in front of our building on 222 s. where I worked downtown and decided to give it a try.
Pretty decent fast food curry. Is it life changing? No. Is it tasty? (Especially compared to some of the other places around.) Resounding yes.
Go for the half and halfs with extra spice — but be warned — you may fall asleep at your computer afterwards if you eat it all because portions are generous.
I’d give it four stars but sometimes its really hit or miss with the consistency of quality. Some days are awesome, and some days are just very decent.

I saw the food cart on the corner as I was running errands and decided to make a spur-​of-​the-​moment stop. Very glad I did. I tried the Tikka Masala and loved it. The vendors were friendly, the service was fast, the food was hot but not too spicy, and the prices are reasonable. Can’t ask for more than that.
I will definitely add this place to my favorites. The only downside is the parking. I had to circle the block looking for a spot. Next time I’ll walk the six blocks from my office. It’s worth it.

Well, after a much too long time after the first visit, I went back to The Curryer to give it another taste. My first time had been right after they opened, and now that they’ve had many months to get into a rhythm it was fun to see the improvement and the new hustle and bustle going on around the cart.
For starters, the cart was parked on the NE corner of 3^rd and Main instead of in the middle of the 300 block. Dunno if this is permanent, but it made for much more logical and presentable access. Coupled with the new pay-​with-​credit parking meters I was able to park just across the street on a day when I forgot my stack of quarters.
Since it was a late lunch (nearly 2pm) they were out of butter chicken, but still had a vegetable (squash?) meal and chicken tikka masala. After a strong recommendation from the fella serving up the goods that was my selection. The chicken came off the fire and right into my dish.
The meal consisted of a bed of rice, the chicken chunks, and a bath of the pinkish sauce on top all served with a big piece of naan. After the first bite I knew that they had come a long way and really fine tuned the recipe. The chicken and the sauce, while both bursting with flavor, each brought a different seasoning to my mouth that I really enjoyed. The mixture was quite nice and I was happy I decided to come back again. I tend to be a little heavy handed with the salt shaker, so this food was just right for me. But if you’re sensitive to salt you might want to make note.
There are still some difficulties associated with working out of a cart. Temperature is a hard thing to control, so the consistency of the rice is a challenge to get right, and maintaining even warmth throughout the dish is a struggle. But that comes with the territory, so I really don’t get too hung up on it. And I felt like the food to finance ratio was right on. The whole meal was six bucks which is on par for what I got. They also had some Thomas Kemper sodas for sale, but I opted to go sans beverage.
Much much better since my first visit, and I’m still a wild fan of the option to have Indian food from a cart. When those hot dogs just don’t cut it, or when you want a quick boxed lunch from a local guy The Curryer is a great option.

4.5 that i rounded up to a 5.
Lets start with the reason i took off 0.5 stars — they are not consistent. I could eat their food everyday for lunch (my office is accross the street), however its a gamble as to whether they will be there on any given day. understood that maybe you won’t be there 5 days a week, but it would be helpful if you posted on your website whether you’ll be there that day… that way i don’t get my hopes up, only to be crushed to see an empty street corner. or worse, i round the corner and get a glimmer of hope and excitement when i see a cart… only to step closer and realize it’s a thai cart and not the curryer
Now for the reasons i rounded up to a 5:
the food is delicious. tikka masala is gooooood and they have it everyday. i just wish it was spicer, however i think thats their mild dish. usually they have two vegetarian options and two chicken options (one mild and one spicy), and you can split two choices. Your dish comes with rice and fresh delicious naan baked on the spot in a real tandoori oven. the naan is usually cooked to perfection — crispy on the outside, soft and slighly chewy on the inside. Sometimes they’re a little charred, but i’ve seen the guy throw in an extra naan if it’s burnt pretty bad.
they know spicy, and apparently Fridays are their «extra spicy» days. i can take heat very well, and two weeks ago the guy at the cart recommended i try the spicy chicken vindaloo. i thought it would be the usual american «spicy»… aka more salty than actually hot. WOW was i wrong. it would definitely be classified it as «indian spicy». i was thoroughly impressed and pleased as i broke a sweat enjoying my chicken vindaloo.
CHEAP. the lunches are $ 5 or $ 6 for the chicken tikka masala. worth every penny, especially since the portions are substantial. i am overly stuffed after having a curryer lunch — i always tell myself not to overdo it and stop eating after half the portion… however its always just too delicious to stop. if you’re a big eater, you can get a double portion and i think it’s only $ 2 extra
lastly, service is pretty good. there are days when the workers/​owners (?) are quiet and merely serve you your food, while other days they are chatting it up and super friendly. fine with me — it’s freezing out there sometimes and i wouldn’t be in the chatty mood either. but they always get the job done and i always walk away with a smile, anticipating the delicious indian food i’m about to scarf down.
lastly, MAJOR plus… they take credit cards.

I want to love this cart, I really do. The problem is that both times I’ve made the trip down have been disappointing at best. No naan either time, and once there were ingredients in my food that were not disclosed that had I eaten it, would have made me very sick, if not dead from anaphylaxis. And I ask. I always ask what’s in my food.
This cart has the potential to be great. I understand they have been beset by troubles and flat tires and winds blow out the flame on the oven, I get it. But there really is no room for blame in the food industry. Your customers are only going to be understanding so many times before they stop coming. Get it together guys.
Two stars for the nice people running the cart, and for the originality of their cart. Everything else, ugh.
