Something has happened to me over the last year. I’ve developed a street food radar and it seems to be getting sharper and sharper. I was driving to a meeting today and peeped this taco cart that I didn’t know about. So after the meeting I came back and decided to give it a whirl. Taco Mix is on the northwest corner of 400 West and 100 South, on what would be the southwest corner of the Delta Center(Yes, I know that the arena where the Jazz play has a new name, but I refuse to call it that. It will continue to be the Delta Center in my mind). I bellied up and looked at the menu. Tacos. Burritos. Tortas(yay, torta fans!). Quesadillas. Oh, and a philly cheese steak sandwich. Wait, what? Yup. He sells a philly cheese steak sandwich for $ 3.50. I didn’t try it today, but I’m curious about how this incarnation of the sammich would taste. At only a buck for tacos(lengua are $ 1.50) and $ 3.50 for burritos or tortas, you get a good deal. Some nice bang for the buck. Since I was in a hurry to another meeting I grabbed a quick carnitas taco. The nice fella who runs the cart(and speaks English fluently, for those who worry about communication) wasn’t shy with the meat and piled it on. Then as I went to grab my toppings I was doubly impressed with the fixins. There was a nice cilantro-y onion-y salsa(not guacamole sauce) and a few of the other suspects. Perhaps it’s that I caught him early in the day, but the cooler was impeccable and neatly organized. There was also a dish with freshly sliced cucumber; Is this standard and I never noticed? Either way, it was delightful. Apparently the fella behind the cart(why didn’t I ask his name? My apologies, kind sir) told me he used to work over at Red Iguana, and at a few local cafeterias before going to work for the owner of the cart. Dunno if that means anything to anyone, really, but I do know I liked the taco and will probably go back again to try something else. Perhaps the philly cheese steak? Definitely a torta or burrito. It’s tough to say after just one taco, so take this review with that in mind. But although it wasn’t totally unique or creative, there’s enough personality here to warrant optimism and another trip.
