Just got back from the Downtown Farmers Market at Pioneer Park and excitedly unwrapped my sharp and shiny cutlery. Their mobile truck is conveniently parked on the Southwest side of the market on Saturday mornings. Drop off your knives, go shop for things to slice and dice, and in 30 minutes or so you will have like-new knives. They price by the inch and my 3 knives cost $ 13.33 to sharpen 16 inches of stainless steel. I usually bring my knives here once a year and they always do great job.

Looks like Lorenz is no longer open. According to their website( ), they will sharpen your knives by appointment only. I tried to stop by their old storefront and found that a different store has taken its place. Very sad as I don’t know any other similar stores in the SLC area.

This place is a joke. I thought that it would be a good place to get our knives sharpened b/c they have been in business so long… I was wrong! It took over a week to «sharpen» our knives. We went to pick them up a week after we dropped them off on saturday and the owners decided to close for the day. How convenient! The main thing is they weren’t sharp, they looked nice and were polished, but if your knives can’t cut a tomato when you get home, they aren’t sharp!

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been to this service shop, but I have to mention them. These guys are ARTISTS. We’d brought our chef knives there– edges are sharpened literally to a razor’s edge and with proper honing they keep their sharpness for quite a while. The knives themselves are polished to remove scratches and dings. If I can’t find an equivalent place in Seattle I might mail my knives to Utah. I’d tried to find an equivalent store when I lived in Boston. After taking our Globals and Henckels knives to a now defunct shop in the tourist-laden Faneuil Hall(my first mistake), they were returned in butchered shape. The body of the blades were scratched and the edge along the length of the knife was hopelessly irregular. OK, I’ll stop whining…
